Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Account Manager position and [Company name], then give a specific reason for applying. Link that reason to the employer's work with clients, such as [specific employer service], rather than offering generic praise. Use "Dear [Hiring manager's name]" when you know the recipient's name; otherwise, use "Dear Hiring Manager".

Choose your evidence

Start with the duties named in the advert. These may include keeping in touch with clients, building relationships and handling concerns. If the role covers campaign delivery, show how you coordinated colleagues and met agreed deadlines. For CRM work, explain how you used [relevant tool] to manage contacts, follow up leads, report results or analyse progress. Use a brief example for each point: describe what you did and state the outcome. Only name tools you have used yourself.

Build the body

Use two body paragraphs, each with a different job-related purpose. In the first, show how you handled [specific challenge] through client communication or relationship management, then give [measurable result]. In the second, connect that evidence to [advertised responsibility]. If the advert covers campaign delivery, explain how you coordinated colleagues and met deadlines. If it mentions CRM work, name [relevant tool] and describe one task you completed with it. Career changers should connect [previous responsibility] to [new-field action]. Early-career applicants can draw on [relevant project], while internal applicants should use [internal project] to demonstrate readiness for the move.

Format it

Keep the letter easy to scan in an online application: start with a greeting, follow with three or four short paragraphs, and finish with the appropriate sign-off and your typed name. Use UK spelling, follow any instructions in the application form and proofread before submitting. Cut vague claims and check that each paragraph gives the reader a clear reason to consider you for the Account Manager role.

Close and sign off

Close with one sentence that links your interest in discussing the role to its client-facing work, such as supporting [specific employer priority] through clear client communication. Keep the tone confident without assuming that you will receive an interview. After a named greeting, use "Yours sincerely,". After "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam", use "Yours faithfully,".
