Accountant cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 6 September 2026

Start with the evidence in your accountant CV, then use the accountant interview guide to prepare for the next stage.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.
01

Choose the version that matches your situation

The role stays the same. The evidence changes with your starting point.

Experienced

Replace every highlighted prompt

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the Accountant position at [Company name]. Your focus on [specific employer priority] suits my experience of preparing financial statements and forecasts for clients.

Evidence

While working on [relevant project], I reviewed accounts, checked supporting records and used [relevant tool] to produce [measurable result]. I also explained the figures to colleagues outside finance, so they could act on them with confidence.

Contribution

I would bring this experience to [advertised responsibility], along with careful judgement and a practical approach to financial advice. I am interested in helping your team achieve [team objective].

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my private-practice experience could support your clients and finance team.

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

02

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Accountant position and [Company name], then give a concrete reason for applying, such as [specific employer priority]. Connect that reason to one relevant part of your background. You may mention [qualification held] if it strengthens the opening, but present it as your route into accounting rather than something every applicant must have. Address the letter to "Dear [Hiring manager's name]" only when you know the correct name. Otherwise, use "Dear Hiring Manager".

Choose your evidence

Pick two or three points from the advert and address each with a specific example. Name [relevant task], explain what you did and state [measurable result]. Depending on the vacancy, useful evidence could include preparing statements and accounts, monitoring budgets, analysing performance or producing forecasts. You could also discuss reconciling records, handling financial data securely, using finance software or explaining figures to colleagues outside finance. Mention [qualification held] or [training completed] only if it supports your application. Accounting routes differ, so do not present one qualification as necessary for every role.

Build the body

Keep the body selective. In the first paragraph, describe [relevant task], what you did and [measurable result]. Depending on the vacancy, this might involve reconciling records, analysing financial data or using [relevant tool] securely. Use the next paragraph to explain how that experience would help with [specific employer priority]. If you are starting out, evidence from study, projects or volunteering is valid when it shows relevant ability. If you are changing careers, state [transition reason] briefly and show how [previous responsibility] transfers. Internal applicants should focus on the outcome of [specific contribution], not their familiarity with the organisation.

Format it

For an online UK application, keep the layout easy to scan. Use a greeting, three or four short paragraphs, a conventional closing and your typed name. Follow any file format or length instructions in the application system. Before submitting, check the employer and recipient names, then proofread the letter for spelling, grammar and missing words.

Close and sign off

Close with one sentence that connects your strongest accounting evidence to [team objective]. Be specific about the contribution you could make, such as explaining financial information clearly to colleagues outside finance, when that matches the vacancy. Then say that you would welcome the chance to discuss your application. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting. After "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam", use "Yours faithfully,".

03

Final check before you send it

  • Names the Accountant position and [Company name].
  • Explains why this role and employer appeal to you.
  • Matches each example to the advert.
  • Shows what you did and gives [measurable result].
  • Removes claims you cannot support.
  • Matches the UK sign-off to the greeting.
  • Checks names, spelling, grammar and application instructions before submitting.
