Role cover letter

Acting cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 10 September 2026

An acting cover letter should make a focused case for your suitability for a specific opportunity. Use these UK examples alongside the acting CV guide, then prepare for auditions with the acting interview and audition guide.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the acting opportunity and give one precise reason for choosing the organisation or production. Follow this with your strongest relevant experience, project or training. Address a named recipient when the name is known; otherwise use "Dear Hiring Manager" rather than guessing.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the casting notice and your research into the employer. For each, describe what you did and give a result you can substantiate. You might draw on finding roles, preparing for auditions, researching characters, learning lines or attending rehearsals. You can also send showreels and headshots to agents and casting directors. Use only the evidence that fits the opportunity and your own experience.

Build the body

Use an opening, two focused body paragraphs and a short closing. Experienced applicants should lead with a closely matched performance example. Early-career applicants can use training or projects without apologising for limited formal experience; acting has no single set entry route, although training can help. Career changers should explain the decision in acting-specific terms and connect earlier responsibilities to capabilities such as persistence, memory, flexibility, initiative or working well with others. Internal applicants should cite a current achievement and show how it prepares them for the new responsibility.

Format it

For an online application, omit postal address blocks when the form already captures those details. Aim for 80 to 150 words, use short paragraphs and replace every placeholder with a concrete fact. Check the spelling, grammar, opportunity title and organisation name before submitting.

Close and sign off

End by expressing direct interest in an audition or conversation. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Put your typed full name beneath the sign-off.

03
