Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Business Analyst vacancy and give one precise reason for choosing [Company name]. Add a brief statement of your strongest relevant evidence, but leave the action and result for the body. Address [Hiring manager's name] when known; otherwise, use Dear Hiring Manager.

Choose your evidence

Select two or three priorities from the advert and employer research. Match them to credible examples involving work such as researching a business area, clarifying stakeholder needs, modelling a process, comparing options, managing requirements, supporting delivery or evaluating change. Business-analysis capabilities can also include process improvement, systems analysis, critical thinking, communication and negotiation. Describe your action and include [measurable result] when one exists. Analytical experience and transferable project or data skills can support an application, but do not present any entry route or preferred qualification as compulsory.

Build the body

Use a concise opening, two focused body paragraphs and a short closing. Give the first body paragraph one clear example: the situation, your action and the result. Use the second to connect that evidence to [advertised responsibility] or [team objective]. For a career change, explain why the move is intentional and connect previous evidence to recent preparation. Early-career applicants can use relevant education, projects or volunteering. Internal applicants should state their interest and show how a current achievement prepares them for the vacancy.

Format it

For an online application, omit postal address blocks when the system already captures those details. Use short paragraphs, a readable typeface and a typed [Your full name]. Tailor the letter to the vacancy, then check its spelling and grammar before submitting it.

Close and sign off

Connect your evidence to the team's work and express interest in a discussion. Use Yours sincerely when you addressed a named person. Use Yours faithfully after Dear Hiring Manager or Dear Sir or Madam.
