Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Commis Chef vacancy and [Company name]. Give a specific reason for applying, tied to an advertised duty such as preparing food from fresh or following a senior chef's instructions. Address a named recipient as "Dear [Hiring manager's name]"; otherwise, use "Dear Hiring Manager". Skip flattery and claims you cannot support.

Choose your evidence

Choose two priorities from the advert. For each one, give a brief example that explains what you did, how you handled the task and [measurable result]. Relevant evidence might cover preparing food from fresh, following a senior chef's instructions, using knives correctly or weighing ingredients accurately. You could instead show how you maintained food-safety, personal-hygiene and kitchen-cleanliness standards, communicated professionally or helped the team during service. Organisation and calm, efficient work under pressure may also be worth mentioning when the advert calls for them. Include delivery checks or stock rotation only when they appear in the vacancy. Apprenticeship applicants should mention [qualification held] if it relates to the English and maths funding rules. Pay details are available in the Commis Chef salary guide.

Build the body

Keep the opening brief, then use two short body paragraphs. In the first, show how you handled an advertised duty and what came of it. In the second, give a different example of communicating professionally or working with colleagues to support service. If you are starting out, evidence from education, projects or volunteering can work. Career changers should explain the move and connect earlier responsibilities to recent kitchen experience. Internal applicants should choose a current achievement and explain why they are ready to move roles.

Format it

If the application form already collects your address, leave postal address blocks out of the covering letter. Break the letter into short paragraphs, use a standard greeting and type your full name below the sign-off. Before submitting it, check the spelling, grammar, employer details and any wording you may have repeated.

Close and sign off

Finish with a direct request to discuss how your experience could help the kitchen team support service delivery. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Type [Your full name] beneath the sign-off.
