Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the construction position and [Company name], then give one specific reason for applying. Use [Hiring manager's name] only when you know it; otherwise write "Dear Hiring Manager" and use the matching UK sign-off.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement and employer research. Support them with a task, the action you took and [measurable result]. Depending on the vacancy, useful evidence may concern teamwork and organisation or practical abilities such as accurate measurement, reading drawings and safe tool use. State only competence, training and qualifications you genuinely hold.

Build the body

Use a short opening, two focused body paragraphs and a concise closing. Give the first body paragraph to your strongest evidence and use the second to connect it to [specific employer priority]. Career changers should explain [transition reason] and connect prior responsibilities to recent preparation. Early-career applicants can draw on a project, training or volunteering. Internal applicants should cite a current achievement and explain how it prepares them for greater responsibility.

Format it

For an online application, keep the text focused and easy to scan. Use a standard greeting, short paragraphs and your typed full name. Proofread spelling, grammar, employer details and placeholder substitutions before submitting.

Close and sign off

End by expressing interest in a discussion without assuming one will happen. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam".

03

  • Does not claim training, qualifications or practical competence the candidate lacks.
