Role cover letter

Creative Writer cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 20 September 2026

A creative writer cover letter should connect your best evidence to the work named in the vacancy. Use the four examples below alongside the Creative Writer CV Example and Guide for 2026 so the claims in both documents support each other.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

The role stays the same. The evidence changes with your starting point.

Replace every highlighted prompt

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the Creative Writer position at [Company name] because your focus on [specific employer service] matches my experience of developing long-form work.

Evidence

For [relevant project], I used Scrivener to organise the research beside the manuscript and move sections when the structure needed work. After discussing the draft with an editor, I revised it and achieved [measurable result].

Employer fit

I would use the same practical approach for [advertised responsibility]. I am comfortable researching as I write, checking facts before submission and reshaping a draft when editorial feedback calls for a different direction.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the assignments you are planning and how I could support them.

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Creative Writer vacancy and give one specific reason for applying to [Company name]. Add your strongest relevant qualification or piece of experience, but avoid flattery and broad claims about being passionate or creative.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement. For each one, give a brief example of what you did and the result. Useful evidence might show how you researched a subject, planned an outline, checked facts or revised a draft after feedback. Written and verbal communication, initiative and creativity can also support your case when a concrete example demonstrates them. Mention Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Scrivener or another tool only if you genuinely used it and it matters to the work; the appropriate writing software depends on the workflow. Higher-education study can help develop writing capability, but do not present a degree as compulsory.

Build the body

Use a concise opening followed by two body paragraphs. The first should establish your best evidence; the second should connect it to [specific employer priority] or [advertised responsibility]. Career changers should explain the reason for the transition and bridge earlier responsibilities to recent writing practice. Early-career applicants can draw on projects, study or volunteering. Internal applicants should identify a current achievement and explain how it prepares them for the new work.

Format it

For an online application, use a greeting, three or four short paragraphs, a conventional closing and your typed name. Keep the presentation professional, follow any instructions in the application form, and proofread the final version for spelling and grammar.

Close and sign off

End with a direct expression of interest in discussing the role. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Put [Your full name] on the next line.

03

Final check before you send it

  • Names the Creative Writer vacancy and [Company name].
  • Explains a specific reason for applying.
  • Uses relevant evidence and a concrete result.
  • Connects each example to the advertised work.
  • Avoids unsupported claims, generic praise and unnecessary length.
  • Checks spelling, grammar, greeting and sign-off before submission.
