Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Credit Controller role and [Company name], then explain your interest through [specific employer priority]. Follow with one concrete example that matches the vacancy, such as arranging repayments, processing payments, maintaining account records or using [relevant tool]. State what you did and the result instead of offering general praise.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the job advert and prove each one with a specific example. You could describe arranging a repayment, processing a payment, correcting a customer record or resolving a straightforward dispute. Explain what you did, which system or spreadsheet you used and what changed as a result. Mention numeracy, administration or customer service only when the example shows that skill in practice. A focused account of relevant work is stronger than a list of every duty you have performed.

Build the body

Keep the letter to a brief opening, two body paragraphs and a short closing. In the first body paragraph, describe one relevant situation, such as arranging a repayment, processing a payment or correcting an account record. Explain what you did and what changed as a result. Use the second paragraph to connect that experience to the advertised work, such as planning account activity or escalating a risk. If you are changing careers, explain the move and connect previous office, accounts or customer service work to your recent preparation. If you already work for the organisation, lead with a result from your current role. Familiarity alone does not prove that you are ready for the job.

Format it

For an online UK application, use a greeting, a few short paragraphs, a closing and your typed full name. If you address the hiring manager by name, sign off with "Yours sincerely". Use "Yours faithfully" after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Before submitting the letter, proofread it and replace every placeholder with accurate information.

Close and sign off

Close by linking your experience to one advertised priority, such as improving repayment follow-up or keeping account records accurate. Then ask for the opportunity to discuss your application. Do not introduce fresh evidence here or repeat your opening.

03

Final check before you send it

  • Open with the Credit Controller role and [Company name].
  • Replace each bracketed prompt with one accurate, specific fact.
  • Choose evidence that matches the advertised duties.
  • Show what you did, the result and how it relates to credit control.
  • Check names, account details and figures for errors.
  • Match the UK sign-off to the greeting, then proofread once more.
