Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the dancer position and [Company name], then give a specific reason for applying. Start with evidence the reader can assess, such as [relevant project] or [relevant achievement], rather than an unsupported claim about talent or passion.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement and employer research. For each one, explain what you did and what happened. Relevant evidence may concern learning choreography, responding to direction, collaborating with performers, maintaining physical conditioning or applying feedback. Use [measurable result] only when you can support it.

Build the body

Use a short opening, two focused body paragraphs and a direct closing. Let the first body paragraph establish one credible example; use the second to connect it to [specific employer priority]. Career changers should explain [transition reason] and connect [previous responsibility] to recent preparation. Internal applicants should use a specific contribution from [current role] instead of assuming colleagues know their work.

Format it

For an online application, omit postal address blocks unless the form requests them. Use short paragraphs and proofread names, spelling and grammar. Close a letter addressed to [Hiring manager's name] with "Yours sincerely,". After "Dear Hiring Manager," use "Yours faithfully,". Put [Your full name] beneath the closing.

Close and sign off

Refer briefly to [team objective] or another stated need, then express interest in discussing the role. Do not repeat the opening or presume that an audition or conversation has already been offered.
