Role cover letter

Data Analyst cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 15 September 2026

A strong data analyst cover letter connects one relevant example to the employer's needs. Check that evidence against your data analyst CV, use the salary guide when researching the opportunity, and keep the interview preparation guide for the next stage.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

The role stays the same. The evidence changes with your starting point.

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the Data Analyst position at [Company name] because your focus on [specific employer priority] fits how I approach analytical work.

Evidence

On [relevant project], I used [relevant skill] to prepare and analyse data, then tested whether the pattern changed between groups. I turned the results into a clear visual for non-technical colleagues and a more detailed explanation for technical reviewers. I also recorded how I protected sensitive data. The work resulted in [measurable result].

Contribution

That project taught me to decide what each audience needs without smoothing over caveats or uncertainty. I would bring the same care to [advertised responsibility].

I would welcome the chance to discuss how my experience could support [team objective].

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Data Analyst vacancy, [Company name] and one genuine reason for applying. Lead with the qualification, project or work example most relevant to [specific employer priority]; do not begin with praise that could apply to any organisation.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement, then prove the closest one with a specific action and [measurable result]. Relevant evidence may involve collecting or linking data, checking quality, analysing datasets, tracking KPIs, producing dashboards or reports, or explaining conclusions to technical and non-technical audiences. Mention [qualification held] or [training completed] only when it strengthens the case; relevant capability may also come from work experience.

Build the body

Use a short opening, two focused body paragraphs and a direct closing. Give the first body paragraph to your strongest example: explain the problem, your action and the result. Use the next paragraph to connect that evidence to [advertised responsibility], rather than repeating your CV.

Format it

For an online UK application, use a business greeting, concise paragraphs and your typed full name. Use "Yours sincerely" after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully" after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Proofread the submitted version for spelling, grammar and accidental generic wording.

Close and sign off

End by stating what your evidence would help you contribute to [team objective]. Express interest in a conversation without assuming an interview, then use the sign-off that matches the greeting.
