Early Years Practitioner cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 14 September 2026

An early years practitioner cover letter should connect your evidence to the setting and vacancy. Review your Early Years Practitioner CV example before drafting it, and use the Early Years Practitioner salary guide when assessing the opportunity.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Early Years Practitioner vacancy and [Company name] in the first paragraph. Give a genuine reason for applying, such as [specific employer priority], then identify the experience or preparation that best answers the advertisement. Use "Dear [Hiring manager's name]" when you know the recipient; otherwise, use "Dear Hiring Manager" without guessing.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement and employer research. For each, explain what you did and what changed; use [measurable result] only when you can substantiate it. Relevant evidence can include planning learning activities, observing children's progress, supporting safe routines, recognising safeguarding concerns or communicating inclusively with families and colleagues. If you mention a qualification for work in England, check its current Department for Education status. Approval can affect whether a practitioner may be counted in statutory staff-to-child ratios, and a course title or level alone does not establish approval.

Build the body

Use a concise opening, two evidence paragraphs and a short closing. Give each paragraph a clear purpose. Early-career applicants can draw on training, projects, volunteering or transferable skills. Career changers should explain why they are changing direction and connect previous responsibilities to recent preparation. Internal applicants should cite an achievement from their current role and explain how it prepares them for the advertised responsibility.

Format it

For an online application, use short paragraphs, a standard greeting and your typed name. Remove generic praise, check UK spelling and grammar, and follow any instructions in the application system.

Close and sign off

End by naming the contribution or [team objective] you want to discuss. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Put [Your full name] beneath the closing phrase.
