Kitchen Assistant cover letter examples and writing guide

Updated 3 September 2026

Use these four UK examples to turn relevant evidence into a focused kitchen assistant cover letter. Before drafting, review your Kitchen Assistant CV, use the salary guide for role context, and prepare for the next step with the interview guide.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Choose the version that matches your situation

The role stays the same. The evidence changes with your starting point.

Experienced

Replace every highlighted prompt

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the Kitchen Assistant role at [Company name]. Your focus on [specific employer priority] suits my experience of preparing food, using kitchen equipment and organising storage during busy services.

Evidence

During [relevant task], I unloaded deliveries, stored supplies correctly and achieved [measurable result]. I kept appliances, work surfaces and floors clean while making sure ingredients and equipment were ready when colleagues needed them.

Employer fit

I would bring that practical approach to [specific employer service]. I can help with kitchen set-up and close-down by checking that equipment is clean and working, monitoring storage and reporting problems promptly.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience could support your kitchen team.

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Kitchen Assistant vacancy and explain why [Company name] interests you. Tie [specific employer priority] to [relevant task], so the opening gives the employer something concrete rather than generic praise. If you are applying without formal kitchen experience, mention [training completed] or another relevant preparation; direct application followed by workplace training is one route into kitchen-hand work.

Choose your evidence

Start with the advert. Pick its two strongest priorities and support them with [relevant task], [relevant achievement] and [measurable result]. Depending on the vacancy, useful examples might cover preparing food, receiving deliveries, organising storage, cleaning equipment, checking that equipment works or reporting faults. Use only examples you can substantiate. If the advert prefers a food-hygiene certificate, name [qualification held], but do not imply that every Kitchen Assistant role requires one.

Build the body

Build the middle of the letter around one clear kitchen example instead of listing qualities. Describe [relevant task], explain how you used [relevant skill] and give [measurable result]. If it matches the advert, you might show how you prepared the kitchen for service by checking equipment, monitoring storage or reporting a problem. Career changers can connect [previous responsibility] to the vacancy. Internal applicants should use evidence from [internal project] instead of relying on familiarity with the organisation. End with the contribution you could make.

Format it

For an online UK application, follow the instructions in the application system. Use a greeting, concise letter text, the correct closing and your typed name. Before submitting, check the spelling and grammar, then cut any wording that could apply to every candidate.

Close and sign off

Close with one practical contribution that matches the advert, such as preparing food, organising storage or cleaning kitchen equipment. Then say that you would welcome the chance to discuss the role. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Put [Your full name] on the next line.

03

Final check before you send it

  • Name the Kitchen Assistant vacancy and [Company name].
  • Refer to [specific employer priority] rather than using a generic opening.
  • Support your strongest claim with [relevant task] and [measurable result].
  • Include only duties, skills, training and qualifications you can evidence.
  • Check that preferred food-hygiene training has not been described as a universal requirement.
  • Use the UK sign-off that matches the greeting.
  • Proofread the complete application before submitting it.
