Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Kitchen Porter vacancy and explain why [specific employer priority] interests you. Follow with evidence from [relevant project], focusing on [relevant achievement]. If the advert asks for high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, show how your example meets that point. Keep the reason specific to the vacancy and avoid unsupported claims about [Company name].

Choose your evidence

Pick two or three duties from the advert and give a brief example of how you handled each one. Include the result where possible. If the vacancy mentions helping chefs with basic food preparation, describe a relevant task you completed rather than claiming general kitchen experience. Check the advert before mentioning food-hygiene training: an employer may ask for certification, but it is not required for every Kitchen Porter role. List only [training completed] that you hold.

Build the body

Build the letter around one clear thread: why this vacancy, what you have done and how that experience fits the work. Give each example enough detail to be credible, including [relevant task] and [measurable result], but keep the closing brief. If you already work in kitchens, choose evidence that closely matches the advert. If you are starting out, remember that Kitchen Porter work can be open to direct entry; use a project or transferable task instead. Career changers should explain [transition reason] and connect [previous responsibility] to the role. Internal applicants can show how [specific contribution] prepares them for [advertised responsibility].

Format it

For an online UK application, write three or four short paragraphs between your greeting and closing, then add your typed name. If you address a named person, sign off with "Yours sincerely,". After "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam", use "Yours faithfully,". Before submitting, proofread the letter and check that you have followed the application form's instructions.

Close and sign off

Keep the final paragraph short. Name one practical contribution you could make, then say that you would welcome an interview. Tie the contribution to the advert: if it mentions checking incoming produce, refer to evidence that you can inspect quantities and quality carefully. Avoid introducing a new achievement this late in the letter. Before submitting, compare every claim with your Kitchen Porter CV and check the overall package against the Kitchen Porter salary guide.

03

  • Include [measurable result] where you have one.
  • Describe only training, qualifications and tools you have actually used.
