The role stays the same. The evidence changes with your starting point.

Replace every highlighted prompt

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the Underwriter position at [Company name]. Your focus on [specific employer priority] appeals to me because I have assessed risks, made accept-or-decline recommendations and helped determine suitable terms and pricing.

Risk evidence

On [relevant project], I assessed the risk associated with [specific challenge] and contributed to the decision on whether to accept or decline it. I also helped decide an appropriate premium level. This work produced [measurable result].

Employer fit

I would bring the same practical approach to [team objective]: examining the available information, reaching a clear view of the risk and contributing to decisions on acceptance, terms and pricing.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my underwriting experience could support your team.

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Underwriter vacancy and [Company name], then state one specific reason for applying. Follow with your strongest example of assessing risk or contributing to a decision about acceptance, terms or pricing. Keep the detail for the body of the letter, and leave out praise or claims you cannot support.

Choose your evidence

Start with the duties named in the advertisement. For risk decisions, describe the information you assessed, whether you recommended accepting or declining the risk, and how you contributed to terms or pricing. If you worked with insurance data, explain how you used it to reach a judgement, what action you took and where your authority ended. Add [measurable result] to show the outcome. When communication matters, identify the stakeholders and state what you explained. You may also describe how you handled personal, commercial or financial information under legal and organisational controls, while keeping confidential details out of the letter.

Build the body

Use one strong example instead of listing strengths. Describe the information you reviewed, the judgement you reached and the action you took. If the example involves insurance data, make clear where your authority ended. Then connect the evidence to [team objective] without repeating the opening. Career changers can give [transition reason] before the example. Internal applicants can draw on [internal project] and explain [specific contribution]. Close with what you could bring to the role and an invitation to discuss your application.

Format it

Keep the layout simple for an online application: use short paragraphs, a professional greeting and your typed name. If you know the recipient's name, write Dear [Hiring manager's name] and sign off with Yours sincerely. If you do not know the name, use Dear Hiring Manager and Yours faithfully. Follow any instructions in the application system. You can leave out postal addresses if the system collects them elsewhere.

Close and sign off

Finish with a direct sentence about what you would bring to the role and say that you would welcome a conversation. Avoid writing as though an interview is guaranteed. Before you submit the letter, check the spelling and grammar, remove any unused placeholders, and make sure its claims match your CV.

03

Final check before you send it

  • Name [Company name] and [specific employer priority] in the opening.
  • Choose one solid example for each requirement you address.
  • Explain what you did and give [measurable result]; skip unsupported adjectives.
  • Do not disclose personal, commercial or financial information that is confidential.
  • Make sure every claim matches your CV and other evidence.
  • Use Yours sincerely after a named greeting and Yours faithfully after a role-based greeting.
  • Delete any unused placeholders before you submit the application.
