Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementFocuses on transferable customer service, reliability, learning speed and enthusiasm for practical café work.Leads with years of relevant experience, service volume, operational responsibility and team leadership.

LeadershipShows dependable teamwork, clear communication and readiness to help colleagues.Shows how the candidate allocated work, coached colleagues, handled service problems and kept standards consistent.
CV tailoringMatches transferable examples to the advert and explains why they suit a first barista position.Selects evidence that fits the employer's service style, operational needs and expectations for leadership.

How to write a barista CV

Use a simple, professional layout with clear headings and reverse-chronological employment history. One page usually gives a junior barista CV enough room; use a second page only when relevant experience warrants it. Keep the order familiar: contact details, personal statement, employment history, skills, education, then relevant extras.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour experience level, strongest evidence and fit for this vacancy
Employment historyRecent roles with concise, measurable achievements
SkillsAbilities supported by your work, study or volunteering
EducationQualification, institution and dates
ExtrasRelevant languages, volunteering or interests only

Tailor every section to the coffeehouse and vacancy. Reuse the employer's wording where it truthfully describes your experience, but do not stuff the page with repeated terms. In the personal statement, lead with evidence rather than enthusiasm alone. Under each job, prioritise accomplishments over a list of routine duties and quantify results where you can verify them. Keep the skills section short and specific. If you lack café experience, draw on retail, hospitality, events, coursework or volunteering that proves customer service, teamwork, accuracy and reliability. Education should remain brief once you have substantial employment history.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Customer-focused junior barista with six months of café experience and two years in busy retail service. Trusted to handle up to 70 transactions per shift, resolve routine customer queries and keep the counter organised during peak periods. Now seeking a role where careful drink preparation, dependable teamwork and a calm manner can support consistently good service.

Too generic

Friendly and hardworking person looking for a barista job. I love coffee, work well with people and can do anything required. I am a quick learner and would be a great addition to your team.

Writing your experience

A task tells the reader what your job involved. An achievement shows what you did, the setting in which you did it and the result. A useful pattern is: action + scope + outcome. For example, state what you changed or handled, add the volume or context, then finish with a measurable effect.

Baristas commonly prepare and serve hot drinks and food, welcome customers, take orders, process payments, clean work areas and equipment, check stock, maintain hygiene standards, and complete opening or closing checks. Those duties help establish scope, but they become useful CV evidence only when you show how well you performed them.

Basic wordingStronger evidence-led wording
Served customers during busy shiftsServed an average of 85 customers during Saturday shifts while keeping till discrepancies below £2 per month
Cleaned the coffee machineCompleted equipment cleaning checks on 20 closing shifts with no missed entries in the branch log
Helped with stockReorganised the weekly stock count for 60 product lines, cutting the count from 50 to 35 minutes

Another weak bullet might read, "Made drinks and provided good service." A stronger version is, "Prepared up to 110 hot drinks per shift and helped reduce average queue time from seven to five minutes during the morning rush." Replace invented-looking adjectives such as "excellent" with evidence the employer can question and understand.

Start bullets with direct verbs such as prepared, served, welcomed, processed, resolved, cleaned, checked, counted, trained, reorganised, reduced or increased. Vary them only when the work genuinely differs. Use present tense for a current role and past tense for previous work.

Choose two or three measures that matter in your actual setting: customers served, drinks prepared, transaction accuracy, queue time, waste, stock discrepancies, training completed or shifts covered. Figures are useful only when they are true. If your employer did not track formal targets, use defensible scope instead, such as the number of shifts, colleagues supported, products counted or new starters trained. Tailor the final bullets to the vacancy, especially where the advert stresses customer service, teamwork, product knowledge, drink building or equipment cleaning.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order. Give the qualification or course title, institution and completion date; add one short line on relevant practical work only when it strengthens the application. Once your employment record carries more weight, school-level detail can be reduced so the reader reaches your service evidence quickly.

For a UK barista role, college courses in barista skills, food and beverage service, or retail skills are optional rather than essential. They may provide useful preparation, but do not present them as a universal entry condition. If you completed one, record its exact official title, provider and date. A short note can identify relevant assessed work, provided it is accurate.

If you have no role-specific course, do not pad the section with vague claims such as "coffee studies" or rename workplace induction as a formal qualification. Include your genuine education, then let transferable evidence from retail, waitressing, events or volunteering do more of the work elsewhere in the CV. Where a vacancy mentions a role-specific qualification, follow the wording in the advert and state only what you actually hold.

Keep unfinished study clear: write "in progress" with the expected completion date, rather than implying that it is complete. Avoid listing attendance certificates unless they are relevant to the vacancy and you can verify their title and issuer. Dates, names and completion status should match any documents an employer may ask you to discuss.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing routine duties without showing how well they were performed.

InsteadTurn each duty into evidence of an outcome. For example, state the number of customers served during a shift, the value of payments handled or a documented improvement in service time. Use only figures you can defend.

  • AvoidSending the same barista CV to every coffee shop.

InsteadAdjust the personal statement, skills and experience wording to match the role, coffeehouse and employer. Keep the evidence truthful while reflecting the language and priorities in the advert.

  • AvoidUsing a decorative layout that makes service experience hard to find.

InsteadChoose a simple, professional structure with clear headings, consistent dates and reverse-chronological experience so a hiring manager can scan it quickly.

  • AvoidWriting a skills section full of broad claims such as "hard-working" or "people person".

InsteadUse specific barista skills such as espresso preparation, milk texturing, equipment cleaning, order taking and stock control, then support the most important ones with examples elsewhere in the CV.

  • AvoidIgnoring transferable experience when applying for a first barista job.

InsteadFor a barista CV with no experience, draw on retail, hospitality, volunteering or education to show customer service, payment handling, teamwork, cleanliness and calm work during busy periods.

  • AvoidCopying keywords into the CV without context.

InsteadUse relevant wording from the job posting naturally and only where it matches your experience. Back important terms with a concise example or achievement.
