Why this works

This CV focuses on leadership, operational scale, specialist childcare skills and measurable contributions rather than relying on years of experience alone.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable experience, relevant study, placement work or volunteering. State the childcare contribution you are ready to make and support broad claims with a specific example.Open with a focused personal statement that sums up childcare management expertise, leadership scope and the strongest operational or developmental outcomes.
Experience evidenceUse placements, volunteering, education and public-facing work to show reliability, communication, safe routines and support for planned activities.Prioritise leadership roles, significant contributions and specialist skills. Use concise descriptions, figures you can defend and childcare terms that fit the vacancy.
Skills emphasisFocus on safe practice, communication with children, support for care routines, observation and dependable teamwork. Match the wording to tasks you have genuinely performed.Add staff leadership, curriculum planning, emergency procedures, provision improvement and communication with families, colleagues and other professionals.
Achievement scaleShow your contribution to a room, activity, handover or small group. Keep figures modest and proportionate to the responsibility you held.Show the scale of teams, rooms, programmes or improvement work, then connect that scope to a clear result. Use only figures you can verify.
Education and developmentPlace relevant education or a role-specific qualification prominently when practical experience is limited. Concise notes can draw attention to applicable learning or placements.Keep earlier education compact. Give appropriate space to genuine specialist development, conferences and professional memberships when they strengthen the application.
CV structureReverse-chronological order generally suits applicants with related experience. A skills-led structure may help a new entrant place transferable evidence before a short work history.Begin with the personal statement, then present recent leadership experience in reverse-chronological order so the reader can find scope, responsibility and outcomes quickly.

How to write a childcare CV

For most applicants, a reverse-chronological childcare CV is the clearest choice because it gives recent, related experience the most attention. If you are new to the workforce, a functional format can move skills, qualifications, placements and volunteering nearer the top. Aim for one or two pages, use plain headings and leave enough white space for quick reading.

Put your name and contact details at the top. Include a mobile number, professional email address, town or city and, if useful, a professional profile link. Under the header, place a short childcare personal statement, followed by skills, experience, education and relevant additional information. A British CV does not include a photograph or date of birth.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, relevant setting or transferable background, strongest evidence and target post
ExperienceEmployment, placements or volunteering in reverse-chronological order, with concise evidence of results
SkillsA tailored selection supported by examples elsewhere in the CV
EducationExact qualification titles, providers and dates, with useful placement detail for junior applicants
Additional informationRelevant training, languages, memberships or childcare-related interests

Write the personal statement for the advertised post. Replace broad claims about enjoying work with children with a few concrete strengths. In your experience section, explain the action, its scope and what changed. Select skills you can discuss confidently at interview.

Give education more room when study or a placement provides your strongest evidence. Once you have substantial experience, retain the necessary facts but let recent work take priority. An additional information section is optional; if you use one, every item should reinforce your suitability for the role.

For a senior childcare CV, focus on leadership responsibilities, specialist skills, service scope and measurable contributions, not years of service alone. Keep each bullet detailed enough to establish responsibility but short enough for the result to remain obvious. Check dates, spelling, contact details and file format before sending it.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Patient childcare assistant with supervised placement experience supporting play activities, daily care routines and clear handovers to families and colleagues. Confident adapting verbal and non-verbal communication for children with different needs, recording observations carefully and following hygiene and hazard-reporting procedures. Seeking a nursery assistant post where dependable preparation and calm daily support will help children settle and participate.

Too generic

I am a hardworking person who loves children and wants a job in childcare. I am friendly, reliable and good at everything I do. I can work alone or in a team and would be an asset to any nursery.

Writing your experience

A childcare experience section should explain what you did, the setting or scale involved and the result. Start each bullet with a direct verb, identify the activity or responsibility, then add a figure or observable outcome you can verify. Useful measures include group size, frequency, attendance, records completed and preparation time. The number need not sound dramatic. It needs to be true.

Use the pattern action + scope + result. Compare "Helped with activities" with "Prepared four weekly sensory-play sessions for groups of eight children, with materials ready before the morning handover." The second version establishes frequency, group size and personal contribution without overstating authority.

BeforeAfter
Helped children settle inSupported six new starters with consistent arrival routines and shared daily observations during a three-week settling period
Planned fun activitiesPlanned and reviewed three weekly play activities for groups of up to ten children, adapting materials after recording engagement
Kept the room clean and safeCompleted opening and closing checks across two activity areas and reported identified hazards during every assigned shift

These are illustrative childcare CV examples, not figures to copy. Draw evidence from your own records and experience.

Useful action verbs include adapted, arranged, assisted, communicated, documented, implemented, observed, prepared, recorded, reviewed, supported and supervised. Senior applicants can use coached, coordinated, introduced, monitored and led when those verbs match their authority.

Choose bullets that fit the vacancy. Relevant evidence can include helping children through transitions; adapting verbal and non-verbal communication for children with English as an additional language or additional needs; carrying out care routines with regard to development, dignity and individual needs; or supporting healthy food choices and physical activity. You might also show how you identified hazards, followed reporting procedures, used equipment safely, applied hygiene controls or shared information appropriately with families and professionals.

Some posts call for evidence of planning educational programmes with colleagues, reviewing play activities and keeping accurate, confidential observation records. Describe your own contribution precisely. Do not compress every duty into one role: three or four well-chosen bullets are easier to assess than a dense task list. If the post focuses on planning and observations in an early-years setting, use an early years practitioner CV example to see how that experience can be presented.

For senior positions, quantify team size, operational scope and improvements where your records support the figures. If formal written complaints formed part of your work, state what you personally investigated, recorded or communicated without claiming authority you did not hold.

With no paid childcare experience, use supervised placements, volunteering, youth activities or transferable employment. State the context plainly and focus on preparation, communication, reliability and outcomes. Make supervision clear whenever another person retained responsibility.

Education & certifications

List education from newest to oldest. Give each qualification's exact title, the training provider and the completion date, or an expected completion date for study in progress. Junior applicants can add one short line about a relevant placement, assessed project or practical topic. Experienced applicants can usually reduce older education to the core facts and leave more room for recent professional development.

Qualification wording needs care when an employer is assessing which staff may count in staffing ratios. A qualification may need to be recognised as a "full and relevant qualification" by the Teaching Agency for that specific purpose. This is a conditional point about staff counted in ratios, not a blanket entry condition for every childcare job. Copy the title from your documents and avoid claiming that it has this status unless your evidence confirms the wording.

Keep provider registration separate from personal qualifications. Providers on the Early Years register are subject to the statutory requirements of the early years foundation stage framework. Providers on both the Early Years and Childcare Registers are subject to both sets of requirements. Experience in such a setting can be relevant, but the organisation's registration is not your personal credential. Describe the duties you carried out and the knowledge you used instead.

People already working in the childcare sector may be eligible for funding towards a qualification. Eligibility is only a possibility, so do not present funding as guaranteed. On the CV, distinguish completed study from study in progress and use accurate dates. Discussions about funding belong with the relevant employer or training route rather than in the qualification entry.

A separate professional development section is useful only when it adds evidence for the target post. Record each activity exactly as documented, including the provider and date where available. Attending a course does not justify inventing a certificate title. Senior candidates can include relevant technical development, conferences and professional memberships when these support the post.

A clean entry contains the qualification or activity title, provider and date. Add a short note only if its relevance would otherwise be unclear. Remove unexplained abbreviations and long module lists. If a credential carries conditions or dates, state them accurately.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties such as "looked after children" without showing what you did, the setting or the result.

InsteadTurn each duty into evidence. Name the activity or care routine, give its scale when you have a defensible figure, and explain the result, such as better participation, smoother handovers or more complete records.

  • AvoidUsing a generic skills list built around words such as "caring", "friendly" and "hard-working", with no childcare evidence.

InsteadChoose skills tied to the vacancy, such as recognising safeguarding concerns, observing children, communicating inclusively or planning activities. Prove the most relevant skills with short examples in your experience section.

  • AvoidDescribing safeguarding as a personality trait instead of showing careful practice.

InsteadUse factual wording about recognising concerns, recording information accurately and following the setting's reporting procedure. Protect confidentiality by omitting identifiable details about children and families.

  • AvoidAdding every hobby, short course and unrelated achievement simply to fill the childcare CV.

InsteadUse an additional information section only when its contents reinforce your suitability. Relevant learning, languages, professional memberships or childcare-related interests may earn space; unrelated detail pushes stronger evidence down the page.

  • AvoidWriting a senior childcare CV as a long list of routine tasks and years served.

InsteadGive more space to leadership roles, significant contributions and specialist skills. Include concise evidence of technical ability and genuine professional development where these strengthen the application.

  • AvoidUsing vague or invented numbers to make achievement bullets sound impressive.

InsteadUse only figures you can explain at interview or support from your records. If no useful number exists, state the scope and observable result precisely rather than inventing a metric.
