How to write a communications officer CV

Use a reverse-chronological CV so the reader sees your latest and most relevant work first. Two pages is a sensible target for most candidates, while an early-career applicant may only need one. Start with contact details and a personal statement, followed by employment, skills, education and relevant extras. Leave out your photo and date of birth.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, strongest communications area and one or two credible outcomes
EmploymentRecent roles, campaign scope and results supported by defensible figures
SkillsTools and methods that match the vacancy and appear in your evidence
EducationQualification, subject, institution and dates, with the strongest relevant detail first
ExtrasVolunteering, languages or publications that add useful evidence

Keep the personal statement to a short paragraph. Tailor it to the organisation instead of opening with a broad claim such as "hard-working communications professional". Use the Communications Officer cover letter guide to carry the same evidence into your letter.

Under each role, use three to five bullets. Communications Officer work can include supporting internal and external communication plans, producing press releases, newsletters, website copy and social posts, assisting with media enquiries, maintaining websites, coordinating events and reporting on performance. Choose duties that match your record rather than trying to mention everything.

Make the skills section easy to scan, but avoid unsupported buzzwords. Prioritise writing, editing, channel management, analytics and stakeholder work where the rest of the CV proves them. If you have handled crisis or reputational-risk communications, describe your precise contribution, the audience and the verified outcome without disclosing sensitive details. Give education more space early in your career; shorten it once professional experience carries the application.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Communications Officer with four years of experience planning public-facing campaigns and producing web, email, press and social content. Increased newsletter click-through by 21% after revising the content plan and testing subject lines, while coordinating contributors across five service teams. Known for clean copy, calm stakeholder management and practical reporting that turns campaign results into the next round of improvements.

Too generic

I am a creative and hard-working communications professional with excellent people skills. I can write content, use social media and work well alone or in a team. I am looking for an exciting role where I can develop and contribute to a successful organisation.

Writing your experience

A useful achievement bullet answers three questions: what did you do, what was the scale, and what changed? A reliable pattern is action + channel or audience + measurable result. Put the number at the end when it is the payoff, or lead with it when scale is the main point.

Weak bulletBetter bullet
Wrote the staff newsletter.Reworked the fortnightly staff newsletter for 1,200 colleagues, lifting average click-through from 18% to 24% over four editions.
Helped with media relations.Drafted media materials and coordinated six interview requests for a regional campaign, contributing to 14 pieces of tracked coverage.
Managed social media accounts.Planned and scheduled a six-week social campaign across three channels, increasing link clicks by 27% against the previous campaign.

The stronger versions identify the output, audience or time frame and result. Their figures are illustrative. Replace them with evidence from your own work, never invented estimates.

Choose measures that fit the activity. For digital content, use verified reach, click-through, completion, engagement or conversion data where available. For media relations, record relevant placements, interview requests handled or response times achieved. Event bullets can cover registrations, attendance, feedback or delivery against budget. Website work may be measured through publishing volume, fewer errors, faster updates or a documented change in user behaviour. Reporting itself becomes an achievement when a recommendation changes a content plan or channel choice.

Internal communications deserve the same precision as external campaigns. Name the employee audience, the channel, the publishing rhythm and the result. For crisis or reputational-risk work, state what you personally drafted, checked, monitored or coordinated. Use measures such as response time, enquiry volume or correction speed only when you have reliable records, and protect confidential information.

Do not force every bullet into a percentage. Scale can come from the number of stakeholders, publications, pages, enquiries or simultaneous deadlines involved. When a result was shared, describe your contribution accurately: "coordinated", "drafted" or "supported" is more credible than claiming you led the entire campaign.

Useful opening verbs include drafted, edited, planned, published, coordinated, briefed, monitored, analysed, revised, increased and reduced. Rotate them naturally and avoid "responsible for". Keep each bullet to one or two lines where possible, with enough context to make the outcome meaningful.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order. For each entry, give the qualification level and subject, awarding institution, study dates or graduation date, and grade where it strengthens the application. Recent graduates can add one or two lines about a relevant project, student publication, placement or campaign. Once professional experience carries the CV, reduce older education to the essential details.

For UK Communications Officer candidates, many employers prefer a Bachelor's degree in communications or a relevant field such as journalism, marketing or public relations. Treat this as a preferred route, not a universal entry condition. A Master's degree may also receive preference, but it is not established here as compulsory. If either qualification supports your application, place it prominently and connect it to practical evidence elsewhere in the CV.

The Public Relations and Communications Assistant Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship is an optional vocational route towards the role. It takes a minimum of one year to complete. Give the exact qualification title shown on your records, the relevant institution or provider, and the completion or expected completion date.

For non-graduate UK candidates, career guidance advises demonstrating English and IT ability through academic qualifications. It typically points to four or five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and two or three A Levels for this route. Present these as route-specific career guidance rather than universal legal conditions.

Keep unrelated school details brief. For any genuine short course, include its title, provider and completion date, then let your experience bullets show how you applied the learning. Do not describe attendance as certification.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing content duties without identifying the channel, audience or result.

InsteadName the output, such as a press release, newsletter, web page or social post, then add a defensible measure such as reach, engagement, publication pickup or response rate.

  • AvoidTreating every channel as though it needs the same writing style.

InsteadShow how you adapted tone, length and message for journalists, website visitors, newsletter readers or social audiences.

  • AvoidClaiming to be a strong communicator without giving evidence.

InsteadReplace the claim with an example of a clear briefing, edited publication, coordinated interview or stakeholder communication and state what happened next.

  • AvoidLeaving measurement out of campaign examples.

InsteadInclude the communication metric you monitored, the insight you drew from it and the change you recommended. Use only figures you can defend.

  • AvoidOverloading the CV with design and software names while neglecting editorial judgement.

InsteadBalance tools with evidence of proofreading, accuracy, message consistency and sensible handling of deadlines.

  • AvoidUsing vague leadership language on a senior CV.

InsteadState the scale of the strategy, the stakeholders involved, the channels overseen and the measurable effect of your decisions.
