Why this works

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable experience, practical readiness, teamwork and a clear reason for moving into site work. Use one modest, verifiable example from education, volunteering or another physical role.Open with years and breadth of site experience, then name the scale of work supported, practical specialisms and one strong outcome. Keep the statement focused on the target vacancy.
Experience evidenceShow reliable completion of assigned tasks such as clearing work areas, moving materials, taking measurements or assisting tradespeople. Explain supervision and scope honestly.Show ownership across larger work areas or several crews, coordination of materials and equipment, support for less experienced workers, and outcomes across repeated projects.
Tools and equipmentList equipment personally used and connect each item to a simple task. Avoid suggesting independent competence where the work was closely supervised.Demonstrate broader operation and maintenance experience, selection of suitable tools for the task, and coordination with equipment operators, backed by clear examples.
Measurements and plansInclude examples of basic calculations, measuring distances, following instructions and marking work areas accurately.Show how plans or specifications informed setting out, sequencing, alignment or checking across a larger section of work.
Team contributionDescribe cooperation with supervisors, labourers and individual tradespeople. Good evidence includes following instructions promptly and keeping materials ready.Describe coordination across several trades or site activities, clear communication around moving equipment, and practical support that kept work progressing.
Achievement metricsUse small, defensible measures such as loads moved, areas cleared, shifts completed or measurements checked. Context matters more than impressive numbers.Use broader measures such as project duration, crew size, material volumes, work areas or reductions in delays and rework, but include only records you can substantiate.

How to write a construction laborer CV

Use a clear reverse-chronological format, starting with your latest role. Keep the design plain enough to scan quickly: one readable typeface, consistent headings, straightforward dates and no graphics carrying important information. Two pages usually give an experienced applicant enough room; someone seeking an initial site role may only need one.

Put your name, professional email address, mobile number and location at the top. Add a LinkedIn URL only if the profile is complete and relevant. A photo and date of birth do not belong on a British CV.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementThree or four lines covering relevant experience, practical strengths and one defensible result
Work experienceEmployer, title, location, dates and action-led evidence, with the newest position first
SkillsA focused selection that matches the vacancy and reflects work you can discuss confidently
EducationQualification, institution and dates; give more space to recent study if you have little experience
Additional informationRelevant training, volunteering or a driving detail only when it strengthens the application

Tailor the evidence

Read the vacancy and note repeated duties, tools and project types. Then mirror accurate terminology where your own background supports it. A construction laborer CV is stronger when it covers practical ability, safe working and cooperation with others instead of relying on broad claims such as "hard-working". Relevant evidence may include preparing work areas, distributing materials, assisting tradesworkers, measuring from instructions or operating equipment.

Keep the personal statement specific to the job. In the experience section, lead with outcomes rather than copying a duty list. Select skills that you have actually used, and place the strongest vacancy-matched items first. Education should be concise once experience carries more weight. Put certificates or professional development in a separate section, ordered newest first, with the name, issuing organisation and expiry date where applicable.

Before sending the CV, check spelling, date consistency and contact details. Save it in the employer's requested file format and use a sensible filename containing your name and the role.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Construction laborer with four years of experience supporting refurbishment and groundworks teams on busy residential sites. Skilled in material distribution, site preparation, measurement and hand-tool operation, with a record of helping crews complete weekly work areas to programme. Known for clear communication, dependable attendance and careful coordination with tradesworkers.

Too generic

I am a hard-working person looking for a construction job. I can do many tasks, work alone or in a team and learn quickly. I would like an opportunity to develop my career with your company.

Writing your experience

Work-experience bullets should tell the reader what changed because of your work. Start with a strong verb, identify the task and its scale, then finish with a measurable result. Useful measures include quantities moved, work areas completed, crew size, shifts supported, time saved, rework reduced or progress against programme. Use only records and figures you can defend; never invent a number to make a routine duty sound impressive.

Flat dutyEvidence-led version
Cleaned the siteCleared debris from 12 work areas across a six-week strip-out, keeping access routes ready for the following trades each morning
Moved building materialsUnloaded and distributed 180 plasterboard sheets across four floors during a two-day delivery window, allowing the fitting crew to begin on schedule
Helped tradespeopleSupported a five-person carpentry team with measured cuts, material staging and daily tool checks across 24 housing units

The stronger versions show action, scope and outcome. They also help a recruiter understand the setting without wading through a long description. If you do not have a percentage or financial result, use honest operational detail: the number of plots, floors, deliveries, crew members, metres, shifts or completed work areas.

Choose verbs that match the work. "Prepared", "cleared", "loaded", "distributed", "measured", "marked", "assembled", "compacted", "aligned", "maintained", "assisted" and "coordinated" are more useful than vague openings such as "responsible for". Where it reflects your experience, you can write about removing debris and possible hazards, positioning materials according to plans, digging or backfilling trenches, maintaining tools, assisting tradesworkers, or signalling equipment operators.

Keep each bullet to one or two lines and avoid packing several unrelated duties into it. Four to six bullets per recent position is a sensible target, with fewer under older or less relevant work. Put the evidence most closely matched to the vacancy first. A senior applicant should also show scale: crew coordination, work sequencing, handovers, resource planning or improvement in delivery. Someone entering the field can draw on warehousing, landscaping, removals, volunteering or practical study, but should explain the transferable task rather than pretending it was site employment. If you are applying for a role that includes coordinating crews and work sequencing, use a site manager CV example to show the responsibilities you can support with evidence.

Education & certifications

For UK direct entry to construction labourer work, there are no fixed academic requirements. That does not make the education section pointless. List your most relevant or recent education with the qualification, institution and completion date. If you have limited site experience, add one or two short details about practical coursework or projects, provided they are accurate. Once you have a solid employment record, keep older education brief.

A construction-skills or construction-operations course can help with an application for an initial site role, but it is not a universal prerequisite for every labourer vacancy. Present it plainly under Education or Professional Development. Give the exact course title shown on your records, the provider and the completion date. Do not rename a short course to make it sound like a larger qualification.

A Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship with a construction employer is another possible entry route. Applicants to intermediate apprenticeships will usually be asked for some GCSEs, often including English and maths. Because this condition concerns the apprenticeship application route, do not describe those GCSEs as a blanket entry condition for every construction labourer job.

Route or recordHow to present it
Direct entryLead with transferable practical evidence and keep education concise
Relevant courseUse its exact title, provider and completion date
Level 2 Intermediate ApprenticeshipState the apprenticeship title, employer or training provider, and dates accurately
Site card or test recordCopy the exact card type or test pass shown on your current records

If you include site certification or a test record, identify it accurately. State the exact card type, issuing organisation and expiry date where one applies; do not imply that every vacancy has identical certification requirements. Where the issuing organisation on your record is the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), reproduce that name exactly rather than substituting an informal label.

Create a separate Certifications or Professional Development section when you have several relevant items. Order them from newest to oldest. Check every title and date against the original document before applying, and remove expired or unrelated entries unless their historical relevance is clear and honestly labelled.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing only job titles and dates, without saying what happened on site. A recruiter cannot tell whether the work involved site preparation, material distribution, trenching, concrete work or support for skilled trades.

InsteadAdd concise, action-led bullets beneath each role. Name the task, give its scale and state the result you can prove, such as the number of deliveries handled, areas cleared, shifts supported or measurements completed accurately.

  • AvoidUsing one generic personal statement for every vacancy. Broad claims such as "hard-working construction labourer" do not show which parts of the advertised work match the candidate's experience.

InsteadTailor the statement to the vacancy in three or four lines. Mention relevant experience, practical skills, teamwork and one defensible accomplishment, using the employer's wording only where it accurately describes your background.

  • AvoidPresenting duties as a loose block of text. This hides practical evidence and makes experience harder to scan, especially when several projects or site assignments sit under one employer.

InsteadUse reverse-chronological experience with employer, title and dates clearly separated. Follow each role with short bullets covering project work, equipment used, cooperation with trades and measurable outcomes.

  • AvoidWriting "used tools" without identifying the equipment or the work completed. The phrase gives no sense of competence, scope or maintenance responsibility.

InsteadName only tools and equipment you have genuinely used, then connect them to a task. For example, explain whether drills, saws, tampers or measuring equipment supported preparation, installation, compaction or finishing work.

  • AvoidClaiming every possible site skill, even when the candidate cannot support it in an interview. A long list can become less convincing when it is detached from the employment evidence.

InsteadChoose 10 to 15 relevant skills and reinforce the strongest ones in experience bullets. Use only figures, equipment names and responsibilities that you can explain and defend.

  • AvoidGiving vague certification details or implying that one card applies to every construction vacancy. An incomplete label may leave the employer unsure what the candidate actually holds.

InsteadIf applicable, use a separate Certifications or Professional Development section. Record the exact current test pass or card type, issuing organisation and expiry date where relevant, without suggesting that every role has identical certification requirements.
