How to write a consultant CV

Choose a clear structure

Use a clean, text-led layout that a recruiter can scan without hunting for dates, titles or results. For consultants with an employment history, arrange roles in reverse-chronological order. A practical section order is contact details, personal statement, employment history, skills and education. Add a short section for relevant projects, languages or professional development only when it strengthens the application.

Keep the document proportionate to your experience. One or two pages will usually give an early-career applicant enough room, while a consultant with extensive experience can use up to three pages. If your consultancy career is long, describe the five most recent roles and reduce older positions to the employer and title. Do not squeeze everything into a tiny font simply to hit an arbitrary page count.

SectionWhat to includeWhat to leave out
Personal statementConsulting focus, relevant experience and one credible resultGeneric claims about being passionate or hardworking
Employment historyClient problem, your contribution, scope and measured outcomeA copied list of routine duties
SkillsFive to ten capabilities that match the particular roleEvery tool or method you have encountered
EducationMost recent qualification first, with relevant detailSecondary-school results once higher education makes them unnecessary
ExtrasRelevant projects, languages or professional developmentPersonal information that does not help the application

Write the personal statement last. Once the rest of the CV is settled, you can select the strongest two or three points rather than making unsupported promises at the top. In the employment section, concentrate on experience relevant to consulting; previous consultant titles are not the only useful evidence. Analysis, stakeholder work, process improvement and presenting recommendations can all transfer from business analyst roles when you show the context and result.

Balance technical and interpersonal skills according to the specialism. An IT-focused application may need more space for systems knowledge, while a people-focused role may give greater weight to communication and collaboration. Use only skills you could discuss confidently at interview.

Tailor the wording for each vacancy. Reuse accurate terms from the advert where they genuinely describe your experience, but keep the prose natural. A graduate consultant CV may put education and substantial projects before a short employment section; an experienced consultant CV should usually let client outcomes and commercial contribution carry more weight.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Consultant with six years' experience turning operational analysis into practical recommendations for service and retail clients. Led stakeholder interviews and workshops across four improvement projects, helping one client cut average case-handling time by 18%. Combines structured analysis with plain-speaking presentations and careful follow-through during implementation.

Too generic

Hardworking and results-driven consultant with excellent communication skills and a passion for solving problems. I work well independently or in a team and am looking for an exciting role where I can develop my career and add value to a successful company.

Writing your experience

Turn duties into evidence

Consulting bullets work best when they show a result, the action that produced it and enough context to judge the scale. Start with the change or business problem, explain your own contribution, then give a defensible measure. Measures can cover cost, time, productivity, adoption, revenue, delivery or quality. If a commercial figure is confidential, use an approved percentage, range or operational measure instead. Never invent a number because a consultant CV template contains one.

A useful pattern is: action + scope + method + result. Keep ownership precise. If you analysed the data but a manager presented the recommendation, say so. If the outcome belonged to a wider team, use wording such as "contributed to" and identify your part.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for analysing client processesAnalysed 14 service workflows and isolated three recurring hand-off delays, supporting a redesign that cut average turnaround time by 12%
Helped with stakeholder workshopsPlanned and facilitated six workshops for 42 operational staff, converting feedback into an agreed list of eight implementation priorities
Produced reports for clientsSynthesised interview and performance data into a 25-page options report; the client approved four of five recommendations for pilot delivery

The stronger versions work because the reader can see what was examined, how large the task was and what followed. The figures are illustrative, so replace them with facts from your own records. A valid metric does not have to be dramatic. The number of stakeholders interviewed, sites reviewed, workstreams coordinated or recommendations adopted can make a junior consultant CV specific without exaggeration.

Consulting experience may cover research into client operations, interviews with employees and managers, facilitated workshops, analysis of findings, solution design, reporting and implementation support. Later-stage work can also include monitoring whether a solution achieved its target and adjusting the approach. Select only the activities relevant to your actual assignments and the vacancy.

Useful opening verbs include analysed, modelled, interviewed, facilitated, diagnosed, recommended, presented, implemented, evaluated, streamlined and coordinated. Vary them because the work varied, not merely for stylistic variety. Avoid vague openings such as "helped with", "worked on" and "involved in" when you can state your contribution accurately.

For senior applications, add commercial and leadership context: project value where disclosure is permitted, team size, account growth, profitability contribution or the number of parallel workstreams. Graduate applicants can use placements, university consulting projects, volunteering and part-time work. The same rule applies: establish the problem, name your action and show the outcome.

Education & certifications

Education belongs on every consultant CV, but its position and detail should reflect the candidate. List the most recent qualification first. Recent graduates can add relevant modules, a dissertation, consulting projects or assessed presentations when these provide better evidence than a short work history. Experienced applicants can usually reduce each entry to the qualification, subject, institution and completion year. After higher education, secondary-school qualifications can be omitted.

There is no single education route that fits every use of the word "consultant". Treat management, IT, recruitment and surgical consulting as separate occupations, then follow the requirements for the exact vacancy. Do not place an unrelated credential on the page simply because another consultant cv example includes it.

For recruitment consulting, some employers may prefer a degree connected to their industry, including human resources, marketing, public relations or business development. A specialist recruitment agency may instead expect a relevant degree or experience in its field. Direct application can also be an optional route for candidates with related human resources or business-development experience. The Recruiter Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship is another optional route through a recruitment company. Present the route you actually completed; do not imply that an optional route applies to every recruitment role.

Surgical consultant applications sit within a regulated clinical route and need separate treatment. For the route leading through a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) examination is mandatory. GMC registration and completion of the MRCS examination are normal entry requirements for surgical specialty training pursued towards a consultant post. State these exact credentials only when they apply to your route and records.

For other consulting specialisms, follow the advert and give role-specific qualifications or professional development their correct names, dates and issuers. If no grounded qualification is relevant, concise and accurate education details are better than padding the section with weak short courses.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidUsing one generic consultant CV for every application, with broad claims such as "strong problem solver" but little connection to the advertised work.

InsteadTailor the skills and evidence to the consulting specialism and borrow relevant terminology from the job advert where it truthfully describes your experience.

  • AvoidListing project duties without explaining what changed for the client or organisation.

InsteadWrite bullets that connect the action to a defensible result, such as a shorter process, lower cost, higher productivity or better adoption. Use only figures you can explain at interview.

  • AvoidDescribing analysis without showing how it led to a recommendation or decision.

InsteadFollow the chain from research and stakeholder input through analysis to the option recommended, then state the outcome where known.

  • AvoidPacking the skills section with every technique or system encountered during a career.

InsteadChoose the skills most relevant to the vacancy and include only those you can discuss confidently when questioned.

  • AvoidGiving extensive detail for early or unrelated roles while compressing recent consulting work.

InsteadUse reverse-chronological order. Give the strongest detail to recent, relevant assignments and reduce older positions to the information needed to understand career progression.

  • AvoidLeaving communication and collaboration as unsupported labels.

InsteadProve them through examples of interviews, workshops, client presentations, joint implementation work or change adoption rather than relying on adjectives.
