Why this works

This consulting CV sample puts commercial outcomes first and backs up leadership, structured problem solving and client delivery with credible evidence of scale.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Evidence focusUses placements, university projects and part-time work to show analysis, teamwork and delivery.Leads with client outcomes, commercial impact and the scale of programmes or portfolios managed.
Problem solvingShows how a defined problem was broken into manageable questions and supported with evidence.Shows ownership of the overall problem-solving approach, workstream structure and decision path.
Client exposureProvides examples of research, stakeholder interviews, meeting support and clear presentation of findings.Demonstrates client relationship management, difficult stakeholder conversations and influence over senior decisions.
Delivery scopeDescribes a contribution to one analysis, workstream or implementation task, tied to a clear result.Quantifies responsibility for several workstreams, delivery risks, timelines, resources and output quality.
LeadershipShows constructive teamwork, initiative and influence without relying on a management title.Shows how teams were directed, outputs reviewed and colleagues developed while delivery stayed on track.
Impact measuresUses defensible measures such as research coverage, processing time, accuracy, adoption or deadlines met.Uses defensible measures such as cost reduction, revenue growth, programme value, adoption and benefits realised.

How to write a consulting CV

Use a clear, reverse-chronological format and aim for no more than two pages. Put your contact details first, followed by a short personal statement, core skills, professional experience, education and a brief section for relevant extras.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour consulting focus, experience level and two relevant pieces of evidence
ExperienceProjects, your contribution and the measurable change produced
SkillsMethods, tools and commercial capabilities supported elsewhere in the CV
EducationYour highest relevant qualifications, newest first
ExtrasLanguages, volunteering or publications that strengthen the application

Research the role and likely client work before tailoring your consulting CV. Move the most relevant specialisms and outcomes towards the top, borrow wording from the vacancy only when it accurately describes your experience, and replace internal project labels with plain business language. Show analytical thinking, structured problem solving and delivery through evidence rather than adjectives.

Keep the layout restrained. Use consistent headings, dates and spacing, then proofread every line. A clear, error-free document gives the reader an immediate example of your written communication.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Consulting analyst experienced in turning operational data and stakeholder interviews into practical recommendations. Built an evidence-based process review that found 12 avoidable hand-offs and supported a 16% reduction in average completion time. Confident presenting concise findings to technical and non-technical audiences and working with delivery teams to track adoption.

Too generic

Hard-working consultant with excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills. I work well alone or in a team and am looking for an exciting role where I can grow and help clients succeed.

Writing your experience

Treat each experience bullet as a compact piece of evidence. Start with the action, establish the scope and finish with the result. A useful pattern is: action + work performed + scale or context + measured outcome. This keeps attention on what changed because of your work, whether that was lower cost, faster delivery, stronger adoption or a better customer outcome.

BeforeAfter
Helped with a client process review.Mapped a 14-step customer onboarding process across three teams, found four duplicated checks and supported changes that cut average handling time by 11%.
Prepared reports for senior stakeholders.Turned findings from 18 stakeholder interviews into an options paper and executive presentation, securing approval for a six-month pilot.
Supported implementation of a new system.Tracked adoption across 120 users, analysed weekly feedback and helped raise completion of the new workflow from 64% to 88% in eight weeks.

The figures above are illustrative. Use records you can verify, and separate your contribution from the wider team's result. If a commercial figure is confidential, give defensible scale another way: processes reviewed, stakeholders interviewed, locations covered, users supported or time saved.

Choose verbs that name the work precisely: analysed, structured, modelled, interviewed, synthesised, recommended, presented, facilitated, implemented, coordinated, evaluated and improved. Junior applicants can draw on university projects, placements and part-time work for evidence of research, teamwork and structured problem solving. Senior candidates should show how they designed the approach, coordinated workstreams, managed risks and resources, reviewed outputs, influenced client decisions and maintained delivery quality.

Do not cram unrelated claims into one bullet. One result per bullet is easier to scan and leaves room to explain the method and scope. Across the section, vary the evidence: include analysis, communication, implementation and evaluation where those activities reflect your actual work.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order, giving the qualification, institution and completion year. Recent graduates can add relevant detail, such as an analytical project, dissertation topic or strong module result. Experienced applicants should usually keep this section shorter and give more space to project outcomes.

For some consulting graduate schemes, an Undergraduate degree at 2:1 level is conditionally required, but this is not a profession-wide rule. Other schemes accept different classifications or subjects. Check the exact vacancy and reproduce its criteria accurately rather than assuming that one academic route applies everywhere.

The Certificate in Business Accounting, issued by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, is an optional course of study within some graduate programmes. Include it only if you have completed it or are genuinely studying towards it. Give the exact title, issuer and status, plus an expected completion date where applicable. Do not present the availability of this course as a general requirement for consulting work.

Where a vacancy does not name a credential, concentrate on clear, honest presentation. Put the most relevant qualification first, use consistent dates and explain unfamiliar course titles in plain language. Relevant short courses can sit under a separate professional development heading. Leave out attendance certificates that add little evidence, and describe incomplete study accurately rather than using vague wording.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing project duties without saying what changed for the client.

InsteadWrite each bullet around an action and a result you can defend, such as reduced cost, improved efficiency, stronger adoption or better customer outcomes.

  • AvoidCalling yourself analytical without showing structured problem solving in practice.

InsteadGive a concise example of the problem, the analysis or hypothesis you used and the measurable outcome.

  • AvoidUsing internal project names and unexplained abbreviations.

InsteadTranslate internal language into clear business terms that an external reader can understand immediately.

  • AvoidSending the same consulting CV to every firm and role.

InsteadResearch the target role and client context, then adjust the opening section, evidence and terminology to match the advertised work.

  • AvoidBurying the strongest commercial results on the second page.

InsteadPlace the most relevant specialisms and measurable achievements early, while keeping experience in reverse-chronological order.

  • AvoidSubmitting dense or error-prone writing for a client-facing position.

InsteadUse short, precise bullets, remove repetition and proofread carefully. The consulting CV itself gives the reader evidence of your written communication.
