How to write an engineering CV

Use a clear, reverse-chronological engineering CV with contact details first, followed by a personal statement, employment history, skills and education. Keep it to no more than two sides of A4 in most cases. A longer CV can be justified for a senior post or when essential technical information will not fit, but extra length should earn its place.

Tailor the document to the engineering discipline and employer. Read the advert closely, note its precise terminology and use matching words where they describe your real experience. Keep the personal statement short. It should establish your specialism and direction without repeating the rest of the page. In employment history, give enough context to understand the project, then prioritise results supported by facts and figures. Writing your experience

Engineering experience bullets work best when they show the action, its technical or commercial scope and the result. Start with a strong verb, name the system, asset, process or project involved, then add a defensible measure. Useful measures include programme time, cost, quantity, defect rate, drawing volume, inspection coverage, resource use or the number of stakeholders. Use only figures you can support from your own records or explain at interview.

The stronger versions do not inflate the candidate's authority. They state exactly what the person did and give the reader enough context to judge the contribution. If a result belonged to a team, say "contributed to", "supported" or "coordinated" and identify your part. A junior engineer might quantify calculations checked, drawings updated, test results reviewed or actions closed. A senior engineer can show project value, team size, technical approvals, programme recovery, risk reduction and decisions made within their authority.

Choose verbs that fit the evidence: designed, analysed, calculated, modelled, specified, inspected, tested, reviewed, resolved, coordinated, planned, delivered, verified and improved. Use "led" only when you directed the work. Responsibilities still need context, but they should not crowd out outcomes.

Civil engineering evidence may cover work delivered to specification within time, financial, resource, commercial and legal limits. It can also include site inspections, progress checks, multidisciplinary communication, design documentation, data analysis, risk procedures or use of CAD, Revit and BIM processes. Education & certifications

List each awarded qualification with its exact title, subject, institution and completion year. Recent graduates can add two or three lines on a relevant design project, laboratory assignment or dissertation, concentrating on the engineering problem, method and result. Experienced candidates can reduce older education to a compact record because employment evidence should take priority as the distance from university increases.

Do not present one course's admissions rules as general entry requirements for engineering employment. Requirements vary by institution, programme and application route. Where a vacancy asks for a role-specific qualification, copy its exact name only if you hold it and place it in education or a separate professional development section.

One narrow example is UCL's Engineering Foundation Year route for UK fee-paying students traditionally underrepresented at UCL. Applicants on that route are required to obtain 100 UCAS tariff points from level 3 academic qualifications and meet its non-academic eligibility requirements. Those conditions apply to that course and audience, not to every engineering applicant or jobseeker.

For the Engineering A-level entry route covered by the supplied criteria, applicants are required to have English at C or 4 and Physics or Science at B or 6. All Engineering applicants within the stated admissions scope, including UK nationals, are also required to demonstrate English-language reading, writing, listening and speaking ability through school qualifications or an English-language test. Keep such admissions evidence separate from professional experience on a CV.

The SQA Highers standard entry route in the supplied criteria requires Mathematics at A and one of Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science or Engineering Science at B; Physics is preferred. It also requires Physics or Engineering Science at B at National 5 and English at C at National 5. If your development record genuinely follows this structure, evidence the work completed under the relevant headings. Do not imply that alignment is an awarded credential.

There is no supported named certification in the supplied qualification evidence, so avoid padding the section with unrelated short courses. Add training only when it is relevant, completed and accurately titled, with the provider and date shown.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding every software package or engineering term you have encountered.

    Include only skills you can discuss confidently at interview. Distinguish practical use from brief exposure and remove tools that do not support the target role.

  • Ignoring the language used in an online job advert.

    Read the advert closely and reuse relevant terms verbatim where they truthfully describe your experience. Do not paste keywords into an unrelated list or claim experience you do not have.

  • Letting senior-level claims stay vague, such as 'managed projects' or 'led teams'.

    Define the scale: project value or duration, team size, technical authority, risk controlled and measurable delivery result. Use only figures you can defend.
