How to write a HVAC technician CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological CV with your latest position first. Two pages will suit most candidates, although an early-career technician with limited experience may need only one. Choose a simple font such as Arial or Calibri, use clear headings and leave enough white space to make the document easy to scan.

SectionWhat to include
Contact detailsName, UK location, mobile number, professional email and optional profile URL
Personal statementTrade background, strongest technical evidence and the type of work you can handle
SkillsTechnical abilities that match the vacancy, supported by evidence elsewhere
ExperienceEmployer, title, dates and concise achievement bullets, newest role first
EducationAwarded qualifications, apprenticeships and relevant training
Additional informationRelevant licence, languages or other details that help your application

Keep the personal statement to a short paragraph. It should identify your level, the systems or settings you know and one or two outcomes you have delivered. Avoid a long list of traits.

In the experience section, include the company name, job title and employment dates for each relevant position. Use bullets to show accomplishments in commercial or residential work, particularly diagnosis, preventative maintenance, installation and customer communication. A junior candidate can draw on supervised practical work, an apprenticeship or transferable maintenance experience as an electrician.

Tailor the skills section to the advert. Where relevant, show knowledge of refrigeration, ventilation, air-conditioning units, boilers, compressors, heat pumps and thermostats. Education should state the exact award, provider and completion date. Put role-specific qualifications or training where an employer can find them quickly, but do not bury stronger work evidence beneath a long course list.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

HVAC technician with five years of experience diagnosing faults and completing planned maintenance across commercial and residential systems. Skilled in tracing refrigerant leaks, servicing filters and coils, checking pressures and explaining repair options clearly to customers. Known for accurate job records, orderly site work and resolving repeat faults without unnecessary parts replacement.

Too generic

Hard-working HVAC technician looking for a new opportunity with a good company. I am reliable, work well alone or in a team and can undertake many different tasks. I want to develop my skills and progress in my career.

Writing your experience

Treat each experience bullet as a compact service report: what you did, the scope of the work and what changed as a result. Numbers help when they are genuine, but the figure does not always need to be financial. You might use the number of sites covered, planned visits completed, repeat call-outs reduced, units installed, jobs closed within target or records corrected.

A useful pattern is: action verb + equipment or problem + scale + outcome. For example, "Completed preventative maintenance" is a duty. "Completed 46 planned maintenance visits across six retail sites in one quarter, closing 94% within the agreed visit window" gives the reader workload, setting and result. Keep every figure defensible and be ready to explain how it was measured.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for HVAC maintenanceCompleted 38 scheduled maintenance visits across four commercial buildings, recording filters, coil condition and refrigerant pressures on every job
Fixed refrigerant leaksTraced 12 refrigerant leaks using detectors and gauges, replaced damaged pipe sections and returned 11 systems to service on the first visit
Installed new air-conditioning unitsInstalled and commissioned 18 replacement units during a six-week refurbishment, completing all assigned work to programme

The improved versions work because they identify the equipment, scale and outcome without turning the bullet into a full paragraph. They also make the candidate's contribution clear. If a result came from a team, say so: "Worked within a four-person team" is more credible than claiming sole responsibility for an entire installation.

Give diagnostic work room on the page. Employers should be able to see how you investigated a fault, what tools or readings informed the decision and whether the repair prevented a repeat visit. Maintenance bullets can mention cleaning filters and coils, checking refrigerant pressures or adjusting thermostat settings when those tasks reflect your actual work. Installation bullets can cover removing old systems and fitting new units, while customer-facing bullets can show how you explained technical issues or repair options.

Strong opening verbs include diagnosed, traced, repaired, installed, commissioned, maintained, tested, inspected, replaced, calibrated, documented, estimated, scheduled and explained. Avoid repeating "responsible for". It describes ownership, not performance. Keep bullets to one or two lines where possible, use past tense for completed roles and present tense only for ongoing responsibilities.

Education & certifications

List education and training in reverse-chronological order. Give the exact title of the awarded qualification, the training provider and the completion year. If you are still studying, state the expected completion date. An apprentice or newly qualified candidate can add a short line on relevant practical modules or supervised work; an experienced technician normally needs only the award details unless a course directly matches the vacancy.

Qualification expectations vary by employer, so read each advert closely. For the Falmouth Exeter Plus HVAC Technician post represented in the research, a relevant professional qualification such as a recognised apprenticeship to a minimum Level 3, or equivalent demonstrable skills and experience, is essential. The same post treats L8 code of practice / legionella awareness and a Full UK driving licence as essential. These are requirements for that named post, not universal entry rules for every HVAC technician vacancy.

That employer describes a Relevant HNC level qualification as desirable rather than essential. It also lists an IPAF license, Pasma training, Asbestos awareness training and Working at Height as desirable. Preserve that distinction on your CV: place qualifications you hold under education or professional training, and do not imply that preferred training is compulsory across the occupation. Use the exact credential name shown on your record rather than shortening, expanding or modernising it yourself.

A listed Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician course is endorsed by the Quality Licence Scheme, but it is not regulated by Ofqual and is not an accredited qualification. If you completed that course, describe it accurately as training and do not present it as a regulated or accredited award. This distinction matters because a course certificate and an accredited qualification do not make the same claim.

Keep this section selective. Training that directly supports the advertised work deserves space; unrelated short courses usually do not. Do not claim a licence, apprenticeship, qualification or certificate until it has been awarded. For incomplete study, use plain wording such as "in progress" with an expected date. If an advert asks for evidence, mirror its terminology only when it matches your documents exactly. Older but relevant training can remain, though employment achievements should still take more space once you have substantial experience.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing routine duties without showing the equipment, setting or result.

InsteadTurn each duty into evidence. Name the system or component, state what you did and add a figure you can defend, such as jobs completed, sites covered, response time or repeat faults reduced.

  • AvoidUsing one vague line such as "maintained HVAC equipment" for every role.

InsteadSeparate installation, fault diagnosis and preventative maintenance work. Mention relevant systems such as refrigeration, ventilation, air-conditioning units, boilers, compressors, heat pumps or thermostats only where you have genuine experience.

  • AvoidHiding troubleshooting evidence inside a long paragraph.

InsteadUse short bullets that show the fault, your action and the outcome. Give particular space to residential or commercial diagnosis when it matches the vacancy.

  • AvoidLeaving out the employer name, job title or employment dates.

InsteadGive each relevant role a clear employer, title and date range, then place the most recent role first.

  • AvoidPacking tools and technical terms into dense blocks of text.

InsteadUse clear section headings and concise bullets. A simple, readable layout makes installation, maintenance and diagnostic evidence easier to find.

  • AvoidClaiming figures, system knowledge or software familiarity that cannot be supported at interview.

InsteadUse only equipment, tools and results you can explain confidently. Replace an unsupported metric with accurate scope, such as the number of sites, call-outs or assets actually handled.
