Why this works

This example shows leadership across complex projects, commercial judgement, client communication and measurable control of budgets, programmes and suppliers.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with training, portfolio projects, drawing and visualisation ability, and the type of brief you can support. Keep the claim narrow and point to one strong project outcome.Lead with project scale, client responsibility and delivery ownership. Use defensible figures for budgets, floor areas, project volumes or team size where they clarify the scope.
Project evidenceUse degree projects, placements, live briefs, competitions, exhibitions or junior studio work. Explain your individual contribution instead of presenting a team result as your own.Prioritise completed client projects and show the path from brief and feasibility work through design development, sourcing, contractor instructions and final delivery.
Technical skillsShow how 2D drawing, 3D visualisation, CAD drawings, mood boards, sample boards and model-making helped develop or explain a proposal.Show judgement as well as production skill: design options compared, risks resolved, documentation reviewed and technical work coordinated across several contributors.
Client and stakeholder workMention client research, presentation support, supplier enquiries and the changes you made after feedback.Show ownership of client relationships, design presentations, supplier decisions and contractor communication, with the scale and outcome made clear.
Commercial evidenceInclude estimates, material comparisons or budget tracking from placements and projects when you genuinely handled them.Quantify responsibility for project budgets, material and labour estimates, procurement choices, timescales and delivery performance.
Leadership and deliveryDemonstrate reliable organisation, teamwork, deadline control and accurate handovers within your assigned part of a project.Show project management from start to finish, including team direction, consultant or contractor coordination, programme control and measurable delivery results.

How to write an interior design CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological format and aim for one or two pages. Choose an interior design CV template with restrained typography, clear headings and enough white space for project evidence to stand out. Put your name and contact details first, followed by your personal statement, experience, skills, education and a small relevant extras section.

SectionWhat earns its place
Contact detailsName, UK location, mobile, professional email and portfolio or profile link
Personal statementYour level, project focus, strongest capabilities and one credible outcome
ExperienceEmployment, placements, freelance commissions and substantial projects, newest first
SkillsTechniques and software supported by examples elsewhere in the CV
EducationExact awarded qualification, institution, dates and selected project detail
ExtrasA relevant live brief, competition or exhibition with your contribution explained

Keep the interior design personal statement to two or three sentences. Replace flattering adjectives with evidence of the briefs, spaces and project stages you have handled.

For experience, describe the brief, your contribution and the result. Useful evidence can include client discussions, advice on space and finishes, 2D or 3D plans, estimates, sourcing, contractor instructions and project coordination. Junior candidates can use assessed projects and placements, while professional studio experience deserves a prominent position when available.

Tie every skill to work shown elsewhere. Evidence may cover drawing, concept development, computer visualisation, graphic design, model-making, research, presentation, organisation and teamwork. List education after experience unless it supplies most of your relevant evidence. Keep extras selective: live briefs, competitions and exhibitions help only when you say what you made, decided or learnt.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Interior designer with four years of experience translating client ideas into residential and hospitality schemes, from early concepts and mood boards to detailed 2D and 3D proposals. Experienced in material and furniture sourcing, cost planning and contractor coordination, with a record of delivering clearly documented projects against agreed budgets and timescales.

Too generic

Creative and passionate interior designer looking for an exciting opportunity. I have a good eye for detail, enjoy working with people and can use several design programs. I am hardworking, organised and able to work alone or as part of a team.

Writing your experience

Build each experience bullet from three parts: a precise action, enough scope to understand the project and a result. The metric need not be revenue. Depending on the work, you could use an agreed budget, floor area, room count, drawing count, suppliers compared, revision rounds or delivery against a deadline. Use figures drawn from records you can substantiate.

BeforeAfter
Helped with plans for client projects.Prepared 18 detailed 2D drawings for a 240-square-metre workplace scheme, incorporating client comments within two revision rounds.
Chose furniture and materials.Compared furniture, fabrics and floor finishes from 12 suppliers, keeping the recommended package within the client's £38,000 allowance.
Managed an interior design project.Coordinated a six-room residential refurbishment from approved concept to handover, issuing contractor instructions and closing 14 snagging items before the agreed completion date.

The improved versions establish scale, constraints and the candidate's individual contribution. If a client's identity is confidential, describe the setting in plain terms, such as "private residential client" or "independent hospitality operator", while retaining non-confidential scope.

Useful verbs include interpreted, researched, photographed, sketched, developed, visualised, specified, sourced, compared, estimated, presented, coordinated, issued and delivered. Choose the verb that matches what you did. Reserve "led" for work you genuinely directed.

Senior candidates can devote more space to feasibility work, budgets, supplier decisions, contractor instructions and start-to-finish project management. For a placement or university brief, identify the type of project and separate your contribution from the team's. A mood board or polished render supports the story, but the bullet should still explain the design decision, practical constraint or outcome.

Education & certifications

List every awarded qualification using its exact title, institution and completion year. If you are still studying, label the course as ongoing and give the expected completion year. Recent graduates can add one or two lines about a relevant final project, assessed live brief or exhibition; experienced candidates will usually benefit from keeping education shorter and giving more room to delivered projects.

Do not present one education route as a universal condition for interior design work. Within National Design Academy interior design courses, Level 3 Diplomas are accredited by AIM Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual. NDA degrees are awarded by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU). Those statements describe the named courses only, not what every employer expects.

Course application rules also remain specific to the institution and route. UCA requires applicants to submit a portfolio when applying for its BA (Hons) Interior Design course. It sets the same portfolio requirement for applicants to its Integrated Foundation Year. These are application conditions for those UCA courses, not employment requirements.

Record only qualifications you have completed or are genuinely taking. Keep software in the skills section unless you hold a separately awarded credential whose exact title and issuer you can verify. AutoCAD, SketchUp and Adobe Photoshop can be listed as skills when your projects demonstrate their use. For a live brief, competition or exhibition, add your contribution and outcome rather than leaving the title unexplained.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing attractive concepts without explaining the client brief, spatial problem or practical result.

InsteadGive each project context: who the space was for, what needed to change, the area or budget involved and the outcome. A compact line such as "Reworked a 75 m² café layout to add eight covers within the agreed footprint" says more than "Created an exciting café concept".

  • AvoidNaming drawing and visualisation skills without showing how they helped communicate a proposal.

InsteadConnect the technique to an output and audience. Mention whether you produced 2D plans, 3D visualisations, CAD drawings, sample boards or models, then state how the work supported a client presentation, design decision or contractor handover.

  • AvoidTreating mood boards as decoration rather than evidence of concept development.

InsteadDescribe the decision behind the board: the brief interpreted, options tested, materials compared or client approval gained. Where defensible, add the number of schemes presented, the turnaround time or the proportion accepted without revision.

  • AvoidLeaving professional studio, live-brief, competition or exhibition work buried under education or interests.

InsteadGive substantial project experience its own clearly labelled entry. State your contribution, collaborators, deliverables and result so a reader can distinguish hands-on work from classroom attendance.

  • AvoidUsing vague claims such as "good communicator" while omitting clients, suppliers and contractors.

InsteadShow communication through actions: translated a client brief into a proposal, presented design options, sourced products from suppliers or prepared instructions for contractors. Add a defensible measure such as the number of presentations, suppliers or project packages.

  • AvoidWriting a freelance interior design CV that focuses only on creative output.

InsteadFor freelance work, include evidence of planning, promotion, pitch development and cost or budget analysis alongside design work. Use figures from your own records, such as proposal values, project counts or budget variance, and never invent missing metrics.
