Why this works

Shows clear progression into crew leadership, backed by credible figures for programme delivery, site organisation, trade support and safe working.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLeads with transferable physical work, reliability, safety awareness and examples of following instructions accurately. It should be honest about limited site experience and clear about the work sought.Leads with substantial labouring experience, the scale of sites or workloads supported, coordination responsibility and a few measurable outcomes rather than relying on broad claims.
Experience evidenceUses examples from placements, warehouse work, maintenance, removals, volunteering or other physical roles. Modest figures can show workload, attendance or work completed.Shows sustained construction-site delivery, support for several trades, demanding material movements and responsibility for keeping work areas ready, orderly and on schedule.
Tools and tasksNames hand tools, electric power tools or equipment used under supervision and explains the basic tasks completed, without overstating independence.Shows broader tool use, independent completion of suitable basic tasks and sound judgement when equipment, vehicles or working conditions need attention.
Safety evidenceShows consistent use of PPE, careful instruction-following and awareness of safe working practices through specific examples from work, training or placements.Explains how safe working practices were maintained across work areas and how hazards, defects or incidents were recognised and reported promptly.
Team contributionShows dependable support, punctual communication and willingness to learn while working alongside experienced tradespeople or supervisors.Shows coordination of labouring activity, practical support for several trades and calm problem solving when deliveries, access or daily plans changed.
AchievementsUses modest, verifiable measures such as loads moved, rooms cleared, shifts completed, attendance or tasks finished within an allocated period.Uses wider measures such as sites covered, operatives coordinated, deadlines met, material losses reduced or recurring defects prevented, provided each figure can be defended.

How to write a labourer CV

Build a clear, targeted CV

Use a simple reverse-chronological layout, placing your latest role first. One or two pages will suit most applicants: enough space for useful evidence without making the reader hunt for it. Choose a readable font, consistent spacing and familiar headings. Complicated columns, graphics and text boxes can make details harder to follow. Save the CV in the file format requested by the employer, then open the saved copy to check that every section still reads correctly.

Put your name, UK location, mobile number, email address and professional profile link at the top. Follow these details with a short personal statement, a focused skills section, work experience, education and relevant extras. Do not include a photo or date of birth.

SectionIncludeCut
Personal statementRelevant work history, practical strengths and one credible resultClaims such as "hard-working team player" without proof
ExperienceEmployer, job title, dates and evidence-led bulletsDense lists of routine duties
SkillsAbilities that match the advertised workEvery tool or task you have encountered
EducationYour highest and most relevant qualifications firstUnrelated course modules
ExtrasRelevant awards, languages or role-specific qualification detailsHobbies that add nothing to the application

Keep the personal statement to two or three sentences. Cover the kind of work you have done, construction or physical-labour skills that suit the vacancy, and a result that gives those claims some weight. Change the wording for each application instead of recycling a broad introduction.

Under work experience, concentrate on labour-intensive roles and recent evidence. State what you did, the scale of the work and the outcome. Freelancers and career changers can open with a compact skills-based section, but their dated employment history should remain clear. Include unpaid practical work when it supplies useful evidence, and label it honestly.

Build the skills section from the job description. Select only abilities you can demonstrate, particularly where the advert names particular duties, tools or working conditions. Your choices should reflect the labourer job you are applying for rather than a generic list copied from a labourer CV template.

In education, list the most relevant and highest qualifications in reverse-chronological order. Record each qualification's exact name and level, institution or awarding body, location and dates. If the advert requests a role-specific qualification, make it easy to find without repeating it in several sections.

Give additional sections a purpose. Relevant awards, certifications and languages may help an application, while unrelated interests usually waste space. If you include a language used to a professional standard, state your competency level. Record applicable renewal or expiry dates for specialist licences and certifications.

Before sending the CV, compare every line with the advert. Check contact details, dates and spelling, then remove repeated claims. A labourer CV sample can supply the structure, but your own verifiable evidence must supply the substance.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Reliable labourer with two years of experience supporting building work, moving materials and keeping active work areas orderly. Accustomed to following instructions accurately with limited oversight and recording completed tasks. Helped a four-person crew finish a six-week refurbishment programme on schedule, with no missed shifts.

Too generic

Hard-working labourer looking for a new opportunity. I can do many different jobs, work well alone or with a team and always give 100%. I am available immediately and would be a great addition to any company.

Writing your experience

Turn duties into evidence

A labourer CV becomes convincing when each bullet answers three questions: what did you do, how much work was involved, and what happened as a result? Start with a direct verb, name the task and finish with a number or outcome you can defend. Useful measures may include quantities moved, work areas cleared, daily jobs supported, crew size, attendance, deadlines or defects reported. An exact count, frequency or timescale often sounds more credible than a loose percentage.

Weak dutyStronger evidence-led version
Helped tradespeople on siteSupported a four-person trades team across 18 property repairs, preparing work areas and delivering requested materials to schedule.
Kept the site cleanCleared and sorted waste from six work zones each shift, leaving access routes ready for the following trade.
Used tools and equipmentUsed six types of hand and electric power tools for basic preparation tasks, completing daily checks before use.

These rewritten bullets let the reader picture the workload. They replace vague phrases such as "responsible for" with accurate verbs. The figures demonstrate the pattern; they are not numbers to copy.

Construction-site labourers complete specific tasks that support the building process. Useful evidence may cover following instructions carefully with little oversight and awareness of construction safety standards and practices. You might also describe moving materials, preparing work areas, completing basic tasks or assisting tradespeople, but only when those duties reflect your own employment.

If you worked in occupied properties or public buildings, mention the setting when it matters to the vacancy. If you used vehicles, tools or employer-issued equipment, explain how you checked items, accounted for them or reported problems. That gives the employer better evidence than a bare equipment list.

Useful action verbs include prepared, loaded, moved, cleared, sorted, assisted, supported, checked, reported, maintained, completed and delivered. Choose the verb that matches your contribution. Do not write "managed" if you helped someone else, or "led" unless you directed people or owned the outcome.

Entry-level evidence can come from warehouse work, removals, landscaping, volunteering or practical training. Translate it carefully. For example, "completed 12 scheduled collections per shift while following loading instructions" says more than "good at physical work". An experienced labourer can show a larger workload, support for several trades, work allocation or coordination across multiple areas; those moving into site management can make that experience clear. Keep three to five focused bullets beneath recent roles and shorten older entries.

Education & certifications

List education and training in reverse-chronological order, beginning with the highest or most relevant item. Give the exact qualification name and level, institution or awarding body, location and completion date. If you are still studying, label the expected completion date clearly. Applicants with substantial employment history can keep older school details brief, while those seeking a first labourer role can give practical study more room.

Read the vacancy before deciding what deserves prominence. When a job description lists a role-specific qualification, reproduce its title accurately and place it where the recruiter can find it quickly. Do not turn a formal title into an unclear acronym. For a specialist licence or certification, include its expiry or renewal date where applicable.

The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment is an entry-level qualification for labourers and other people working in, or planning to work in, the UK construction industry. It is relevant to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme Green Labourer Card route. The route also involves the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test, issued by CITB, and an online application to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme after the applicable qualification and test conditions have been met. Present this as route-specific information rather than a universal qualification rule for every labourer vacancy.

Individual vacancies can set their own conditions. For example, an advertised council labourer vacancy required a current UK driving licence. Treat such wording as specific to that employer and vacancy, not as an entry condition for all labourer jobs. Check the advert carefully and list only credentials you hold. If it does not request a named credential, keep the section factual rather than borrowing one from labourer CV examples.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidUsing one generic labourer CV for every vacancy, even when the advertised work centres on different sites, tools or support tasks.

InsteadChoose abilities and achievements that fit the vacancy. Repeat the employer's wording only when it truthfully describes your experience, and support important terms with a work example.

  • AvoidListing duties such as "moved materials" or "kept the site tidy" without showing the scale of the work or the result.

InsteadAdd detail you can defend: quantities handled, work areas cleared, deadlines met, trades supported or defects reported. A short, specific bullet is more convincing than a broad claim.

  • AvoidClaiming familiarity with tools without explaining whether they were hand tools, electric power tools or equipment used for a particular task.

InsteadName the tool category and connect it to work you have actually done. State the task, your level of responsibility and the safe working practice you followed.

  • AvoidBurying physical work and construction experience beneath unrelated jobs or a long list of generic qualities.

InsteadGive relevant labour-intensive work the most space within a clear employment history. If you are changing careers or have worked freelance, a skills-based CV can bring transferable evidence forward while keeping dates and employers easy to find.

  • AvoidIncluding every hobby, short course or language regardless of whether it helps the application.

InsteadKeep extra sections selective. Include an award, certification or professionally useful language only when it adds evidence for the vacancy, and give a clear competency level for each language you list.

  • AvoidSending a crowded or heavily designed labourer CV that is difficult to scan.

InsteadUse readable type, consistent spacing, familiar headings and an applicant-tracking-system-compatible file format. Check the final document on a phone and computer before sending it.
