How to write a mechanical engineer CV

Use a reverse-chronological layout, with your latest role and highest recent qualification first. A hybrid format can work better for a graduate, career changer or self-employed consultant whose transferable skills are stronger than their employment history. Keep the finished CV concise, usually no more than two pages, and use plain headings that remain easy to scan.

Write a short personal statement for the particular vacancy rather than a general introduction. Writing your experience

Treat each experience bullet as a small piece of engineering evidence. Start with an action, define the component or project, explain what you changed, then give the result. Useful measures include lead time, test completion, weight, waste, assembly time, defect frequency, project value and delivery against schedule. Use only figures you can support.

The stronger versions name the work, your contribution and its consequence. They also give an interviewer something concrete to investigate. If the outcome cannot be expressed financially, use another defensible measure: number of drawings released, tests completed, design iterations closed, stakeholders supported or days recovered from the schedule.

Choose verbs that reveal engineering judgement. Designed, modelled, analysed, prototyped, simulated, tested, validated, diagnosed and resolved suit technical work. Planned, delivered, coordinated, presented, supervised and led suit project or team responsibility. Avoid opening every bullet with "assisted". A junior engineer can still write precisely: "Analysed test data from 18 thermal cycles and traced an out-of-tolerance result to a fixture issue" is honest about scope without sounding passive.

Show progression across roles. Earlier entries may concentrate on drawings, calculations and testing. Recent entries should give more space to project ownership, decisions, budgets, schedules, supplier contact or team leadership where these formed part of the job. Keep each bullet to one or two lines and remove background detail that does not affect the result.

Education & certifications

Present each awarded qualification with its exact title, institution and completion year. Recent graduates can add selected modules, a final project or a short result note when these directly support the vacancy. List only qualifications you hold, and preserve the precise award name. If an application is still in progress, label it clearly with the expected completion date rather than presenting it as completed.

  • Writing duties such as "responsible for testing" instead of showing engineering results.

  • Treating communication as a vague soft skill.
