Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLeads with transferable coordination, problem solving and early evidence of improving a team process.Leads with operational scope, leadership responsibility and verified results against organisational objectives.
Team leadershipShows occasions when the candidate gave direction, supported colleagues or coordinated a small team.Quantifies team size or functional remit and explains how goals, accountability, coaching and development improved performance.
Planning and deliveryUses projects, placements or supervisory work to demonstrate workload planning and delivery against a clear target.Shows ownership of operational plans, resource decisions, KPIs and delivery across a broader function.

Risk and changeShows practical support for a controlled change, risk log or contingency task without exaggerating ownership.Demonstrates responsibility for communicating change, removing barriers, mitigating operational risks and applying continuity plans.

How to write an operations manager CV

Use reverse-chronological order, starting with your current or most recent position. One page can suit an early-career candidate with limited experience; two pages usually give an experienced manager enough room to show scope and results without cramming the layout. Keep the design plain, use consistent headings and leave comfortable white space.

SectionWhat to include
HeaderName, UK location, mobile number, email and optional professional profile link
Personal statementCurrent level, operational scope, strongest evidence and target role
Employment historyRecent roles, responsibilities and measured outcomes
SkillsA focused mix of relevant hard and soft skills
EducationAwarded qualifications, institutions and dates
ExtrasRelevant projects, volunteering, languages or other supporting evidence

The core sections are the header, personal statement, employment history, skills and education. Optional sections can help entry-level candidates and career changers prove abilities that their employment history does not yet cover.

Keep the personal statement brief and concrete. In employment history, give more space to recent, relevant work and reduce older positions to the details that still matter. Match the skills section to the vacancy, but include only capabilities you genuinely possess. List education in reverse-chronological order and state the exact qualification awarded. Extras earn their place only when they support the application.

An operations manager CV should give a useful overview of experience and skills while saving minor detail for the interview. Read every line once for relevance and once for proof.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Operations manager with seven years' experience leading service teams, planning workloads and monitoring performance against operational targets. Managed a 24-person function and introduced weekly capacity reviews that reduced overdue work by 18% in nine months. Now seeking a role combining team development, resource planning and practical process improvement.

Too generic

Hard-working operations manager looking for a new challenge in a successful company. I am a good communicator, work well under pressure and have excellent organisational skills. I can handle many tasks and always try to achieve the best results.

Writing your experience

Treat each bullet as a small piece of evidence. Start with what you changed or controlled, add the scale of the work, then state the result. A useful pattern is: action + operational scope + measured outcome. The measure might be turnaround time, backlog, cost, capacity, budget variance, service level, error rate, project delivery or team development, provided the figure comes from a record you can defend.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for staff rotasReworked weekly rotas for a 16-person service team, cutting uncovered shifts from 11 to 3 per month
Helped improve reportingBuilt a weekly performance report covering 8 service measures, reducing preparation time by 5 hours each month
Managed supplier relationshipsRenegotiated delivery schedules with 4 suppliers, reducing late orders by 21% over two quarters

The improved versions work because they name the action, define its scale and give the reader an outcome. They also avoid claiming sole credit where several people contributed. If the result belonged to a wider project, say that you led a workstream, coordinated the rollout or supported delivery.

Choose evidence that reflects the role you want. Useful operational themes include workload and resource planning, delivery against plans, budget control, performance reporting, project risks, business continuity, stakeholder relationships and team development. A junior candidate can draw on shift coordination, university projects, volunteering or customer service work. A senior candidate needs to show broader ownership through team size, budget responsibility, multi-site scope, competing priorities and sustained results. Candidates moving into operations can also use the assistant manager CV example to frame related management experience.

Vary your opening verbs according to the work: planned, allocated, reduced, introduced, analysed, forecast, negotiated, coached, coordinated, resolved, monitored and delivered. Avoid weak openings such as "helped with", "worked on" and "responsible for" when you can name your contribution precisely.

Do not overload every bullet with numbers. Three or four strong bullets per recent role are easier to read than a long inventory. Select figures that reveal scale or improvement, check that dates and units are consistent, and remove any metric you could not sensibly discuss at interview.

Education & certifications

Place education after employment history when your experience is the stronger selling point. Recent graduates and candidates moving into operations may place it earlier if their studies provide their clearest relevant evidence. For every entry, give the exact awarded qualification, institution and completion year. Add one or two concise notes only when a project, module or assessed piece of work directly supports the vacancy.

Two named routes supported for the UK operations manager market are the Highfield Level 5 Diploma in Operations Management, awarded by Highfield Qualifications and approved as an HTQ at qualification level 5 in 2026, and the HE Diploma in Operations Management, awarded by University of Cumbria and approved as an HTQ at qualification level 5 in 2023. These are descriptive options, not universal entry requirements. Include either credential only if you have actually been awarded it, and copy its name and issuer exactly from your records.

Do not present an unfinished course as completed. If you are currently studying, label it clearly and give the expected completion date without implying that the award has already been made. Older qualifications can be shortened to save space, although the title, institution and year should remain unambiguous.

For other study or training, use generic presentation rather than guessing at equivalence or status: course title, provider and completion date. Leave out unrelated short courses that crowd out stronger operational evidence. A role-specific qualification can support an application, but experience bullets still need to show how you planned work, managed resources, interpreted information or delivered results.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing routine duties without showing whether operational plans, service levels or KPIs improved.

InsteadTurn each duty into evidence: name the action, its scale and the result. Use only figures you can defend, such as a verified reduction in delays or improvement against a service target.

  • AvoidUsing one generic skills list for every operations manager application.

InsteadRead the job description, select the relevant skills you genuinely possess and reflect its terminology naturally. Include both practical capabilities and people skills rather than copying every keyword.

  • AvoidTalking about leadership without explaining how the team was directed or developed.

InsteadState the team size or remit, the goals you set and what changed after your coaching, guidance or performance management.

  • AvoidLeaving budgets, resources and risk out of the employment section.

InsteadWhere relevant, show the budget or resource scope you handled, how you monitored it and the operational result. Add examples of risk mitigation or contingency planning when these formed part of your work.

  • AvoidOverloading the CV with process detail while the outcomes stay vague.

InsteadKeep enough context to make each result credible, but save procedural detail for interview. Prioritise decisions, scale, constraints and measurable outcomes.

  • AvoidClaiming compliance expertise in broad terms without naming the work completed.

InsteadDescribe the policies, procedures or controls you administered in general terms and explain the result, without overstating legal authority or knowledge you do not have.
