A strong production manager CV quickly shows the environment you know, the size of the operation and the results you have delivered. This guide explains how to turn production planning, people management and operational improvements into a clear application, with wording you can adapt to your own evidence. If you run a whole site rather than a production area, see our plant manager CV guide.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with the production setting encountered through study, placement work or an operational role, then connect transferable skills to the vacancy.Open with the production environment managed, operational scale, leadership scope and the strongest improvements delivered.
Experience evidenceUse examples of supporting production plans, checking quality, monitoring runs or solving local problems, with modest figures that reflect personal contribution.Show ownership of plans, targets, quality standards, supplier issues and reporting across a wider operation, with results tied to business performance.
LeadershipEvidence reliability, clear communication and occasions when colleagues were supported, trained or coordinated, without overstating formal authority.Give the size and shape of the workforce led, explain staff development responsibilities and connect leadership decisions to measurable operating results.
Operational scaleQuantify shifts supported, orders handled, checks completed, lines covered or small improvements made.Quantify the operation through staffing, output, budgets or supplier scope where those figures can be defended, then show changes in waste, quality or target delivery.
Skills emphasisPrioritise production process knowledge, attention to detail, software confidence, time organisation and logical problem solving.Balance technical production knowledge with leadership, supplier coordination, performance management, reporting and work across sales, buying and quality functions.
Education and developmentGive education and relevant industry experience enough space to explain the route into production management.Keep education concise and give more space to recent leadership, staff development, scale and outcomes unless the vacancy specifically asks for a role-specific qualification.

How to write a production manager CV

Use a clear, reverse-chronological layout and keep the page easy to scan. One page is a useful target when it gives your experience enough space, although clarity matters more than squeezing the type. A practical production manager CV template puts contact details first, followed by a personal statement, work experience, skills and education.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour current level, production environment, operational scale and strongest result
ExperienceRecent roles first, with concise achievement bullets beneath each job
SkillsYour best eight hard and soft skills, adjusted to the vacancy
EducationAcademic achievements and relevant professional qualifications
ExtrasLanguages, volunteering or technical training only when they support the application

Write the personal statement last. Once the rest of the CV is complete, it is easier to select the two or three facts that deserve space at the top. For experience, give more room to recent, relevant roles and reduce older positions to their useful essentials. Each bullet should connect an action to its scope and outcome.

Keep the skills section selective. Match its language to the advertised production setting and support important capabilities elsewhere with evidence. Record qualifications in reverse-chronological order, using the exact award title, institution and completion date. Extras should earn their place; unrelated interests can crowd out stronger evidence.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Production manager with seven years' experience in high-volume manufacturing, currently leading 42 colleagues across two shifts. Improved schedule attainment from 88% to 96% and cut material waste by 11% by revising daily planning, escalation and supplier routines. Brings practical process knowledge, calm people leadership and clear operational reporting.

Too generic

Hard-working production manager looking for a new opportunity in a successful company. I am a good communicator, work well under pressure and can manage many different tasks. I would like to develop my career and bring my skills to your team.

Writing your experience

Production management bullets work best when they answer four questions: what changed, what did you do, how large was the operation and what happened afterwards? Begin with the result or a precise action, then add the operating context and a defensible measure. Useful evidence might cover schedule attainment, waste, output, downtime, quality, spending, staffing or supplier performance, provided those measures belong to your real work.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for production plansReworked the weekly plan for three lines, raising schedule attainment from 89% to 96% over six months
Managed staff trainingIntroduced a skills matrix and coached 28 operators, reducing uncovered workstation gaps from nine to two per week
Worked with suppliersSet up a weekly materials review with six suppliers, cutting shortage-related stoppages by 14 hours per month

The stronger versions give the reader a decision, a scale and an outcome. They also make ownership clear. "Helped with efficiency" hides your contribution; "redesigned shift handovers" tells the reader what you changed. If an improvement was shared, say so plainly: "Worked with quality and buying colleagues to..." is more credible than claiming sole ownership.

For manufacturing roles, relevant evidence can include drawing up production plans, setting quality standards, monitoring runs, responding to problems, controlling waste, coordinating with suppliers and reporting performance. Staff development and collaboration with sales, buying and quality colleagues can also show the breadth of the job. Select only the duties that match your experience and the vacancy.

Good opening verbs include planned, scheduled, reduced, raised, stabilised, redesigned, negotiated, coached, resolved, monitored, coordinated and reported. Avoid repeating "managed" in every line. Numbers need context: "reduced waste by 9%" is stronger when you add the period, process or line involved. Where the result cannot be measured honestly, name a concrete operational change, such as restoring a delayed run to plan or introducing a documented handover used across both shifts.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order with the exact qualification, subject, institution and completion year. Keep the detail proportional to your experience: a recent graduate can mention a relevant placement or project, while an established manager usually needs only the award details and any directly useful training.

Some manufacturing employers may prefer a university qualification related to their industry rather than one universal production management subject. Depending on the setting, relevant areas may include automotive or aerospace engineering, food and drink production, pharmaceuticals, chemical engineering, or fashion and textiles management. Treat these as sector-dependent preferences, not blanket entry requirements. Read the vacancy carefully and foreground the qualification only when it fits that employer's production environment.

For students, a summer internship or year-in-industry placement can strengthen an application after university. Present it under experience rather than leaving the employer, responsibilities and results buried in the education section. After completing a degree, a candidate may be eligible to apply for some manufacturing or production management graduate training schemes; the scheme's own conditions determine the route.

The Production Manager apprenticeship standard was approved for delivery by Skills England from 28 April 2026. Starts are conditional on a suitable assessment organisation being in place, so describe this as a possible route rather than suggesting that every candidate can begin immediately. If you hold any award, copy its formal name and issuer exactly. Do not pad this section with unrelated short courses.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidWriting a generic opening that never identifies the production environment, size of the operation or results delivered.

InsteadState the production setting, give a defensible measure of scale and name one or two improvements. This lets the reader judge sector fit without searching the rest of the CV.

  • AvoidListing routine responsibilities without showing what changed as a result of the candidate's work.

InsteadPair duties with outcomes. For example, connect production planning with output, quality, waste or target performance, and use only figures that can be checked and defended.

  • AvoidTreating leadership as a personality claim rather than giving evidence of staff management.

InsteadShow the number or type of staff supported, the training delivered and the operational result. Evidence is more convincing than describing yourself as motivational or team-oriented.

  • AvoidUsing the same production manager CV for roles in very different sectors.

InsteadAdjust the opening, skills and recent experience to the advertised production environment. Keep the underlying facts unchanged while giving the most relevant sector evidence more space.

  • AvoidOverloading the skills section with vague qualities or every capability acquired during a career.

InsteadSelect the strongest hard and soft skills for the vacancy, with particular attention to production processes, leadership, quality, suppliers, reporting and waste control.

  • AvoidSubmitting a crowded production manager CV template with long paragraphs and buried dates.

InsteadUse clear headings, reverse-chronological experience and concise bullets. Aim for a readable one-page layout where the evidence fits comfortably; never shrink the type merely to force it onto one page.
