Why this works

Shows clinical breadth, supervision, service improvement and measurable outcomes without losing sight of direct client work.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with relevant study, placements, research exposure and transferable contact with clients or service users. State the psychological setting sought without presenting supervised experience as independent practice.Open with depth of practice, leadership scope and the type of service contribution made. Briefly connect assessment, intervention, supervision or improvement work to defensible outcomes.
Assessment and formulation evidenceDescribe supervised interviews, observations, psychometric sessions or formulation work precisely. Make the supervision context clear and quantify placement activity only when records support the figure.Show independent responsibility for complex assessment and formulation across relevant client groups. Add caseload scale, report timeliness or another measured result, while keeping confidential details out of the CV.
Intervention evidenceName an evidence-based approach only where it was genuinely used and supported by experience. Focus on preparation, delivery under supervision, review and learning.Connect intervention selection and treatment planning to clinical reasoning, service context and outcomes. Show breadth without turning the skills section into an unsupported catalogue of therapy modalities.
Collaboration and communicationUse examples of contributing observations, research findings or psychological perspectives to a team. Explain the audience and the practical result rather than merely listing meeting attendance.Show influence across multidisciplinary teams, services or agencies. Strong evidence may include communicating complex formulations, presenting recommendations or resolving competing views sensitively.
Research and service contributionFeature a dissertation, audit, placement project or conference presentation when relevant. State the question, method, sample or audience and the completed output.Prioritise research that informed service development, dissemination or quality improvement. Include project scale, implementation reach and a measured change that can be substantiated.
LeadershipEvidence reliability, peer support, organised workload and small pieces of training or presentation work. Avoid implying formal authority that the role did not carry.Quantify supervision of junior psychologists or trainees and describe the guidance provided. Add service-development responsibilities, training reach and the result of improvement work.

How to write a psychologist CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological psychologist CV template with clear headings and consistent dates. Two pages will suit many applicants, although relevant research, publications or extensive senior experience may justify more space. Put contact details first, followed by your personal statement, core skills, employment, education and selected extras. Leave out your photograph, date of birth and full street address.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour professional level, specialism, strongest evidence and the role you are seeking
SkillsA short, tailored set of capabilities you can demonstrate elsewhere in the CV
ExperienceRecent roles first, with context, actions, scale and defensible results
EducationAwarded qualifications, institutions and dates, plus relevant detail where useful
ExtrasSelected research, publications, languages, volunteering or professional activity

Keep the personal statement to roughly three or four lines. It should identify what you do and give the reader a reason to continue, rather than repeat broad qualities such as "hard-working" or "passionate".

Under each role, use three to five compact bullets. For psychologist CV work experience, relevant evidence can include psychological assessment and treatment planning, delivery of evidence-based interventions and work with multidisciplinary teams. Senior applicants can also describe supervision and contributions to service development or quality improvement. State only the scope and outcomes you can support.

Build the skills section around the vacancy. Assessment proficiency, communication and interpersonal skills may be relevant; include named therapy approaches only when you have actually used them and they apply to the post. In education, record the exact awarded title rather than shortening or upgrading it. Use extras selectively: one useful research project or publication is stronger than a long list with no connection to the application.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Psychologist with five years' experience conducting psychological assessments, developing individual treatment plans and working with multidisciplinary teams in community services. Delivered evidence-based interventions across a varied caseload and contributed to a service improvement project that reduced the average wait between assessment and first appointment by 12%. Now seeking a post that combines direct client work with careful evaluation of outcomes.

Too generic

Caring and hard-working psychologist looking for a new challenge. I am a good communicator, work well alone or in a team and can help people with many different problems. I would be an asset to any organisation and am keen to develop my career.

Writing your experience

A duty tells the reader what your post involved; an achievement shows what changed because of your work. A useful pattern is: action + scope + method + result. For example, replace "Responsible for assessments" with "Conducted 42 structured psychological assessments over six months, completing 95% of reports within the service target." The second version supplies workload, timeframe and outcome.

Psychologist CV examples often become vague when they describe treatment or collaboration. Write "Developed individual treatment plans for a caseload of 18 clients, with 16 plans agreed at the first multidisciplinary review" rather than "Helped with treatment plans". Replace "Worked with other professionals" with "Coordinated fortnightly reviews with a six-person multidisciplinary team, reducing duplicated appointments by 10% over one quarter." Evidence of appropriate treatment selection, report writing, research work or continuing professional development may also be relevant to clinical psychologist posts, but keep the scope of each claim precise.

For intervention work, name an approach only when it reflects your real practice. A grounded bullet might read: "Delivered a 10-week evidence-based group intervention to 24 participants, with 20 completing the programme." Do not imply that attendance proves clinical improvement. If you have a validated outcome measure, identify the measure and report the result accurately; otherwise use a service measure such as completion, waiting time, response time or audit compliance.

Senior applicants should show leadership through evidence, not adjectives. State how many junior psychologists or trainees you supervised, how often supervision occurred and what improved. Likewise, quantify a service development or quality-improvement contribution through reach, turnaround time, uptake or an audited change.

Good action verbs include assessed, formulated, delivered, evaluated, interpreted, coordinated, supervised, audited, researched, presented and improved. Vary them when the work differs, but do not reach for inflated verbs. "Supported" is perfectly useful when it accurately describes your level of responsibility.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order. Give the exact qualification title, institution and completion year; add a concise note on relevant research or placement work only when it strengthens the application. Candidates still studying should state the expected completion year clearly. Do not present an unfinished course as an awarded qualification, and do not copy a broad person specification into your education record.

Qualification routes depend on the practitioner psychologist modality, and those modalities have their own qualification requirements and protected titles. Match your wording to the specific post rather than treating "psychologist" as one interchangeable route.

For clinical psychologists, the regulated route requires a professional doctorate. Counselling psychologists and educational psychologists require a professional doctorate or an equivalent qualification. State the exact award you hold; if you are still completing it, give your current status without suggesting that it has already been conferred.

For forensic psychologists, the regulated route requires a Masters degree together with the British Psychological Society qualification in forensic psychology, or an equivalent route. Health psychologists follow the corresponding route with the British Psychological Society qualification in health psychology. Occupational psychologists use the British Psychological Society qualification in occupational psychology, and sport and exercise psychologists use the British Psychological Society qualification in sport and exercise psychology; each is paired with a Masters degree or an equivalent route.

Keep the distinction between an awarded qualification, training in progress and short continuing-development activity. Put substantial awarded qualifications in education. A separate professional-development section can hold a small number of recent, relevant courses, described accurately and without presenting attendance as certification.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing assessment as a duty without explaining the method, client group or result. A psychologist CV becomes vague when it says only "completed assessments" and leaves the reader guessing about the candidate's contribution.

InsteadName the defensible scope of the work: interviews, tests, observations or psychometric sessions. Add a measured result where one exists, such as caseload size, report turnaround or the proportion of work completed within an agreed timeframe.

  • AvoidNaming therapy approaches as keywords when the candidate cannot show where they used them. A long modality list may look disconnected from the experience section.

InsteadInclude CBT, DBT, EMDR or psychodynamic therapy only where applicable to your actual experience. Connect each approach to a role, client group, intervention or outcome that you can discuss confidently at interview.

  • AvoidDescribing multidisciplinary work as attendance at meetings rather than a contribution to care. This hides how the candidate communicated psychological findings or influenced a plan.

InsteadState who you worked alongside, what psychological information you contributed and what changed afterwards. Suitable evidence could cover an agreed treatment plan, faster case discussion or improved completion of follow-up actions.

  • AvoidUsing unsupported claims such as "excellent communicator" without evidence from clients, carers, colleagues or presentations.

InsteadReplace the adjective with a short example. Show how you explained a complex formulation sensitively, presented findings clearly, delivered training or adapted communication for a particular audience.

  • AvoidWriting a senior psychologist CV around personal caseload alone. That leaves little evidence of leadership beyond the job title.

InsteadGive space to supervision, service development and quality-improvement work. Add the number of junior colleagues or trainees supported, the scale of the service involved and a defensible operational or care-related result.

  • AvoidAdding numbers that sound impressive but cannot be checked or explained.

InsteadUse only figures you can defend. Case volumes, completion rates, waiting-time changes, audience sizes and project deadlines can work when records support them; otherwise write a precise qualitative result instead.
