Why this works

Shows progression into enterprise risk leadership through portfolio scale, stronger controls, board reporting, quantified outcomes and a supported professional credential.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable analytical work, exposure to risk assessment and the type of risk position you are ready to undertake. Keep every claim proportionate to your experience.State the scale of your risk ownership, the organisational audience you advised and one or two defensible outcomes. Make leadership and commercial judgement clear from the opening.
Experience evidenceUse placements, projects or supporting positions to show how you gathered data, documented risks, maintained records or helped prepare risk reports.Show ownership of the overall risk-management process, including updated assessments, control decisions and advice supplied across business units.
Metrics and scaleQuantify the assessments, reports, records, stakeholders or training sessions you supported, using only figures you can verify.Connect results to portfolio or project value, risk-reduction percentages, reporting reach and the number of controls or business units affected.
Stakeholder exposureDescribe clear communication with colleagues, project leads, auditors or operational teams without overstating your decision-making authority.Show concise reporting to boards and business heads, appropriate external stakeholder reporting and advice that influenced decisions.
Controls and governanceDemonstrate accurate documentation, control tracking, policy support and follow-up on agreed actions.Explain how you designed or improved risk controls, reviewed policies, coordinated audits and connected governance decisions to organisational risk appetite.
Technical positioningPrioritise risk methods and technical areas you have used directly, backed by projects, placements, study or early employment.Prioritise enterprise risk process design, risk appetite, governance and business continuity. Add threat intelligence or cyber resilience only when those areas match your record and the vacancy.

How to write a risk manager CV

Use a reverse-chronological format, beginning with your current or most recent position. Aim for two pages unless substantial senior experience genuinely needs more room. Choose a plain typeface, consistent dates and familiar headings. Leave out your photo and date of birth.

SectionWhat earns its place
Contact detailsName, UK location, mobile, professional email and profile link
Personal statementTarget role, relevant scope and one defensible result
Skills10–12 risk disciplines, frameworks, tools and credentials that you genuinely use
ExperienceOrganisational context, responsibilities and quantified achievements
EducationRelevant qualifications, institution and dates
ExtrasLanguages, publications or volunteering only when useful to the application

Write the personal statement after completing the rest of the CV. This makes it easier to select your strongest evidence. In three or four lines, state your level, the kinds of exposure you have handled and a result that gives the reader a reason to continue. Empty labels such as "strategic" and "results-driven" add little without proof.

For each position, give brief context where disclosure permits: the organisation's scale, the portfolio or project value and your reporting line. Follow with bullets covering your risk work and its effect. A useful structure separates organisational context, relevant responsibilities and quantified achievements. This lets a recruiter understand both your remit and what changed because of your work.

Keep skills compact and easy to scan. Select terminology from the vacancy only where it matches your experience. The same rule applies to qualifications and professional development: give exact titles, institutions and dates, and never imply that unfinished study is complete.

Extras belong at the end. Include them when they add evidence, such as a relevant publication or volunteering responsibility, rather than using them to occupy space.

Tailor every application to the advertised risk disciplines, tools, experience and qualifications. Read the finished CV at least twice, checking dates, terminology, figures and formatting.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Risk Manager with seven years of experience assessing operational and financial exposure across multi-site organisations. Led reporting for a £42m project portfolio and reduced overdue mitigation actions by 31% in 12 months by tightening ownership and escalation. Turns detailed analysis into concise recommendations for senior decision-makers.

Too generic

Hard-working Risk Manager looking for a new challenge. I have good communication and analytical skills, work well under pressure and can handle many types of risk. I want to join a successful company and develop my career.

Writing your experience

Risk management bullets are more convincing when they reveal the issue, your intervention and the result. A practical pattern is: action verb + risk or scope + method + measured outcome. For example: "Reviewed 86 operational risks across six sites, introduced monthly ownership checks and cut overdue mitigation actions from 29 to 11 within two quarters." The numbers establish scale, while the method shows what the candidate actually did.

Give each position enough context for the reader to judge its complexity. Where confidentiality permits, mention the size of the organisation, the assets or projects under review and your reporting line. Then separate routine responsibilities from achievements. Risk Manager work can include planning and implementing an organisation-wide risk process; identifying, analysing and estimating business risks; evaluating exposure against organisational criteria; quantifying risk appetite; and reporting to boards, business heads or other stakeholders. Compliance manager roles often overlap with this work, but focus on meeting regulatory and internal requirements. Use only the responsibilities that match your own remit.

Weak bulletBetter bullet
Responsible for risk reports.Rebuilt the monthly risk pack for 12 business units, reducing preparation time by 18 hours and cutting late submissions by 40%.
Helped with risk assessments.Supported 24 project risk reviews across a £35m portfolio, documented eight escalations and helped secure funded controls for six.
Trained staff on risk.Delivered 14 risk-awareness workshops to 220 employees, raising completion of control-owner reviews from 68% to 93%.

Verbs such as assessed, analysed, quantified, challenged, escalated, mitigated, audited, advised, implemented, reviewed and reported suit this work. Choose one that reflects your actual authority. A junior applicant can say "supported" or "assisted" without weakening the bullet, provided the sentence still identifies the task, scale and outcome.

Possible measures include portfolio value, projects or business units covered, risks reviewed, mitigation closure rates, overdue actions, audit findings, reporting time and training participation. A risk-reduction percentage is useful when you can explain the baseline and measurement method. Avoid claiming that your work prevented an incident unless you have evidence for that conclusion.

Adapt the evidence to the vacancy. Relevant examples may cover internal and external data analysis against risk appetite, insurance, health and safety measures, business-continuity planning, policy reviews, compliance audits, auditor liaison or advice supplied to business units. Some posts may instead call for evidence of financial analysis, threat intelligence, cyber resilience or ISO/IEC 27005. Name a specialist area only when you have worked with it and can explain your contribution.

Senior bullets need to show judgement and influence, not just larger volumes. Explain when you challenged an assumption, escalated a material exposure, advised a business head or prompted a control change. If commercial information is confidential, describe the scale more generally or use an authorised rounded figure. Do not create a substitute metric.

Education & certifications

Keep education concise and tied to the vacancy. Guidance for a risk manager CV favours qualifications related to risk management, including business, finance or economics. Give the qualification, institution and attendance or completion dates. Early-career applicants can add selected modules, a dissertation or a substantial project when these supply evidence missing from their employment history. Experienced candidates can usually omit that detail.

Do not present a degree or professional credential as a universal entry condition unless the vacancy says so. Distinguish completed study from study in progress, and state an expected completion date where appropriate. Put the most recent or relevant qualification first.

The Chartered Insurance Risk Manager route is narrower than risk management as a whole. New professionals qualifying for Chartered Insurance Risk Manager must hold the CII Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Insurance, belong to the Chartered Insurance Institute and have at least five years of sector experience. The route applies to qualified CII members in the insurance sector and wider commercial environment who identify, assess and control risk. These are conditions of that particular route, not requirements for every Risk Manager position.

List professional development beneath formal education when it strengthens the application. Use the exact credential title, awarding body and completion year. If study is ongoing, label it accurately. Remove unexplained initials, do not claim membership you do not hold and never describe an unfinished award as completed. A short, verifiable entry carries more weight than a long description that leaves its status unclear.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing risk duties without explaining what changed.

InsteadName the risk or portfolio, explain how you identified, monitored or escalated it, and finish with a defensible outcome such as lower exposure, faster reporting or improved control completion.

  • AvoidGiving percentages without enough context to judge them.

InsteadPair each defensible risk-reduction percentage with the relevant portfolio or project value, period and scope. The reader can then understand the size and relevance of the result.

  • AvoidUsing the same generic risk manager CV for every vacancy.

InsteadMatch the wording and evidence to the job description. Give most space to the risk disciplines, technical areas, experience and role-specific qualification that relate to the post.

  • AvoidPresenting each position as one dense list of mixed responsibilities.

InsteadOpen with the organisation or portfolio scale and reporting line, cover the risk disciplines and processes you used, then close with quantified achievements.

  • AvoidFilling the skills section with broad traits or unsupported specialist expertise.

InsteadUse a compact list of risk disciplines and technical areas you have applied directly and can discuss at interview. Demonstrate softer qualities through specific experience evidence.

  • AvoidSending a CV with inconsistent dates, figures or terminology.

InsteadProofread the finished risk manager CV at least twice. Check that dates align, figures remain consistent and every claim can be supported if an interviewer asks about it.
