Why this works

This sales CV sample leads with revenue ownership, team leadership and defensible commercial results, then backs them up with clear evidence from each role.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLeads with customer contact, transferable communication skills and readiness to learn a sales process. Any performance claim should come from study, volunteering or part-time work.Opens with sales scope, leadership responsibility and defensible commercial outcomes. It should quickly establish the markets, customers or teams the candidate has handled.
Employment evidenceUses a smaller number of examples with clear context, such as contributing to a shop target, handling transactions accurately or improving product availability.Shows sustained results across several periods and explains scale through revenue responsibility, portfolio size, territory, team size or strategic accounts.
Sales processDemonstrates the basics: identifying needs, presenting suitable options, recording information, responding to objections and asking for the sale.Shows ownership of the sales life cycle, including qualification standards, pipeline priorities, complex negotiation and improvements to team practice.
Customer relationshipsFocuses on listening, clear product information, customer satisfaction and professional follow-up.Shows how relationships were developed across larger or more complex accounts, with evidence such as retention, repeat business or account growth.
Skills sectionSelects a focused mix of learned abilities and personal attributes, then proves the strongest ones in experience or education entries.Prioritises skills tied to commercial control and leadership, while using employment bullets to show how those skills affected sales performance.
CV presentationGives education and transferable evidence useful space because direct sales history is limited. A concise, simple layout prevents weaker material from diluting the application.Keeps recent leadership and commercial results prominent. Earlier roles can be shortened once they no longer add distinct evidence.

How to write a sales CV

Use a simple reverse-chronological format, beginning with your contact details and personal statement before employment history, skills and education. Aim for one page where you can retain enough detail without shrinking the type or crowding the layout. A more experienced candidate may need extra space, but every line still needs to earn its place.

SectionWhat to include
HeaderName, UK location, mobile number, professional email and profile link
Personal statementTarget role, relevant experience and one or two credible strengths or outcomes
Employment historyRecent roles first, with short achievement-led bullets
SkillsA balanced selection of practical sales abilities and interpersonal strengths
EducationQualifications, institution names and dates
ExtrasRelevant languages, awards or volunteering only when they support the application

Keep the design restrained: clear headings, consistent dates, readable spacing and no photograph or date of birth. Tailor the opening third of the CV to each vacancy because that is where the reader should quickly find the closest match.

Write the personal statement after the rest of the document so it reflects your strongest evidence. In the experience section, lead with results rather than copying duties from a job description. Keep the skills section selective and demonstrate those skills elsewhere through specific examples. Education can be concise once experience is established; newer candidates can give it more room. Extras belong at the end and should add evidence rather than personality filler.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Sales professional with five years' experience qualifying opportunities, handling objections and developing customer relationships across retail and business accounts. Increased quarterly sales by 14% in my current territory while maintaining accurate records and coordinating follow-up across a busy pipeline. Now seeking an account management role where careful discovery and dependable commercial judgement will support sustained growth.

Too generic

I am a hardworking and enthusiastic salesperson with excellent people skills. I work well alone or in a team and can sell anything to anyone. I am looking for an exciting opportunity with a good company where I can develop my career.

Writing your experience

Strong sales bullets connect an action to its scale and result. A useful structure is: action verb + customer, territory or pipeline context + measurable outcome + brief explanation of how it was achieved. For example: "Increased quarterly sales by 14% across a 60-account territory by prioritising dormant customers and scheduling structured follow-up." The number supplies scale, while the final clause shows the judgement behind it.

Avoid turning every bullet into a target claim. Sales work can also be evidenced through lead progression, customer retention, response time, stock availability, transaction accuracy or the number of accounts handled. Pick measures that fit the role and that your records can support. If commercial figures are confidential, use an approved percentage, ranking, volume or non-sensitive operational measure rather than disclosing restricted information.

Duty-led wordingEvidence-led rewrite
Responsible for speaking to potential customersQualified 38 inbound enquiries per week and progressed 29% to a booked product demonstration
Helped customers choose productsAdvised an average of 45 customers per shift, contributing to a 9% rise in accessory attachment over one quarter
Managed existing accountsRe-engaged 17 dormant accounts and generated £24,000 in documented orders over six months

These figures are illustrative. Do not copy them or invent equivalents; replace them with outcomes you can defend.

Choose verbs that describe what you actually did: qualified, advised, negotiated, converted, retained, re-engaged, resolved, presented, forecast, replenished, processed and closed. "Supported" and "helped" are useful when the result belonged to a team, but state your own contribution afterwards.

For retail sales, evidence may cover advising customers, presenting and replenishing stock, processing transactions under business policy, and working towards sales or service targets. In roles with a longer sales cycle, focus on understanding client needs, qualifying leads, handling objections and progressing appropriate opportunities. Keep each bullet to one main result. Four precise bullets usually say more than a dense paragraph of duties. If you are moving into a client relationship role, see this account manager CV guide.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order with the qualification, institution and completion year. Newer candidates can add one or two relevant modules, projects or assessed presentations; experienced candidates can usually keep older education to a line. Do not imply that a general sales job requires a degree. A degree is one optional route before applying to a company's graduate sales training scheme, while a specialist sales area may call for a degree related to that field.

For the Sales and Telesales Level 2 apprenticeship route, the stated qualifications are the City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Sales 600/0930/5, the City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Sales 600/0661/4 and mandatory essential skills qualifications. Present these only if you have completed them, using the exact title and issuer shown on your certificate. Do not shorten the title in a way that changes the qualification.

Languages can be useful for sales roles with companies that sell worldwide. Put them in a short additional-information section and describe your level honestly. For any other course or certificate, give its exact title, provider and completion date without suggesting that it is an entry requirement unless the vacancy says so.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing routine sales duties without showing what changed. Phrases such as "served customers" or "worked towards targets" give no sense of performance.

InsteadTurn each relevant duty into an accomplishment. State the action, the scope and a defensible result, such as target attainment, conversion, revenue, retention or customer-service performance.

  • AvoidPutting CRM, negotiation and communication in a detached skills list, then giving no evidence of them elsewhere in the CV.

InsteadWeave the most relevant skills into the personal statement and employment bullets. Name the situation in which you qualified a lead, handled an objection, updated records or progressed a sale.

  • AvoidUsing the same sales CV for retail, account management and technical sales vacancies.

InsteadMatch the evidence to the vacancy. Retail applications can foreground customer advice, stock availability and transactions, while technical sales applications can give more space to product knowledge and explaining complex options.

  • AvoidQuoting impressive-looking figures that the candidate could not explain at interview.

InsteadUse only figures you can defend. Give enough context to make each number meaningful, such as the period, target, territory, product range or size of customer portfolio.

  • AvoidChoosing a decorative layout that makes targets, dates and results hard to find.

InsteadUse a simple structure with clear headings and reverse-chronological employment history. Keep the strongest commercial evidence near the top and make every line earn its space.

  • AvoidFor an applicant without sales experience, filling the CV with broad claims such as "people person" and "hard worker".

InsteadSelect four to seven relevant attributes and support them with evidence from retail, hospitality, volunteering, study or another customer-facing setting. Transferable examples should show listening, persuasion, organisation or service rather than merely naming those traits.
