Why this works

Shows sustained target performance, commercial leadership and measurable gains across revenue, distribution and customer retention.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable customer service, communication or product knowledge, then name the type of sales role sought. Avoid claiming a long record that the employment section cannot support.State the sales specialism, scale of responsibility and strongest defensible commercial result, such as target performance, revenue handled or pipeline growth.
Sales evidenceUse smaller but specific measures, such as customers assisted, product demonstrations completed, leads contacted, appointments booked or an individual target achieved.Show sustained results across larger accounts, territories or teams. Give context for revenue, sales targets, conversion, retention or distribution rather than presenting isolated percentages.
Lead generationShow practical exposure to cold calling, email outreach or social selling, including the volume handled and the next-stage result.Show how prospecting activity was organised into a repeatable sales approach, then connect it to qualified pipeline, referrals, conversion or revenue.
Customer relationshipsFocus on listening, product advice, follow-up and customer satisfaction in direct interactions.Show ownership of important relationships, customer databases, referrals, contracts, product training and the smooth running of a broader sales process.
Skills sectionPrioritise a compact mix of communication, relationship building, lead qualification, product knowledge and the tools actually used.Add sales strategy, negotiation, objection handling, closing, CRM oversight, market analysis and leadership-related capabilities only where the career history proves them.
Commercial scopeDescribe personal contribution and immediate outcomes without overstating authority over pricing, strategy or accounts.Make ownership clear through the size of the portfolio, territory, route, account base or team, plus the effect on sales volume, value, coverage or customer retention.

How to write a salesman CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological format with clear headings and enough white space for quick reading. One page can work for an early-career candidate; two pages usually give an experienced salesperson enough room without burying the strongest evidence. Place your name and contact details first, followed by a personal statement, employment history, skills and education. Add relevant extras only when they strengthen the application.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour experience level, sales specialism, strongest evidence and the type of opportunity sought
Employment historyEmployer, title, dates and concise bullets built around actions and outcomes
SkillsA balanced selection of practical and interpersonal abilities relevant to the advertised sector
EducationQualifications in reverse-chronological order, with useful modules or projects for junior applicants
ExtrasRelevant training, languages, volunteering or awards that add evidence rather than padding

Tailor each salesman CV to the vacancy. Reuse the employer's accurate wording where it matches your experience, especially for products, customer groups, sales channels and tools. Do not paste a block of keywords or claim systems you have never used.

Keep the personal statement to a short paragraph. A useful version tells the reader what kind of salesperson you are and supports that description with one defensible result. In employment history, give the most space to recent and relevant roles. Focus bullets on targets, revenue, lead generation, conversion, account growth, customer retention or route performance when those measures genuinely applied to your work.

Choose skills you can demonstrate elsewhere in the CV. Relationship building and communication can sit alongside sector-specific abilities, but a bare list is less persuasive than evidence in context. For education, state the qualification, institution and dates plainly. Early-career applicants can include relevant coursework, projects or customer-facing experience; established candidates can keep older education brief.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Sales professional with four years' experience selling business services to small and medium-sized organisations. Built a qualified pipeline through email outreach, cold calling and referrals, finishing the last full year at 108% of target. Known for careful discovery, clear proposals and consistent follow-up, and now seeking a role with greater responsibility for account growth.

Too generic

Hard-working salesman who is good with people and can sell anything. I am a great communicator, work well alone or in a team and always try to hit targets. Looking for an exciting company where I can grow and use my many skills.

Writing your experience

A useful sales bullet answers three questions: what did you do, how broad or difficult was the work, and what result followed? Start with a precise action, add the relevant scope, then finish with a defensible measure. Scope might mean a territory, account portfolio, product range, campaign, lead volume or customer segment. Results might include revenue, target attainment, conversion, appointments, repeat business, distribution or time saved.

Do not force money into every line. A percentage, count, frequency or turnaround time can be just as clear. If commercial figures are confidential, use an approved percentage or describe the scale without exposing restricted information. Keep the period visible: "raised conversion by 6 percentage points in six months" is more informative than "improved conversion significantly".

BeforeAfter
Responsible for contacting prospectsContacted 45 qualified prospects each week and booked an average of nine discovery calls per month
Helped customers and sold productsAdvised around 35 customers per shift and increased attachment sales from 18% to 24% over one quarter
Managed accounts and met targetsManaged 62 active accounts worth £480,000 annually and closed the year at 106% of target

Those "after" bullets are illustrative. Replace every figure with one you can verify from reports, reviews, commission statements or your own permitted records.

For prospecting work, show the channel and movement through the funnel rather than reporting activity alone. Cold outreach may involve email, telephone or social selling, so evidence could cover contacts made, replies, qualified meetings or opportunities created. For retail sales, useful evidence can connect product knowledge and advice with conversion, basket value, add-on sales or customer feedback. For larger sales roles, bullets can cover lead qualification, relationship management, proposals, negotiations, contracts, referrals or product training when those duties match the job.

Use verbs that reveal the action: generated, qualified, converted, negotiated, closed, retained, expanded, advised, demonstrated, launched, recovered and exceeded. Avoid opening every bullet with "responsible for" or "helped with". Vary verbs naturally, but do not search for elaborate synonyms when a plain word such as "sold" or "managed" is clearer.

Aim for three to five bullets beneath a recent role and fewer beneath older or less relevant jobs. Put the strongest commercial result first. A junior CV can draw on customer service, fundraising, events or coursework, provided it explains the transferable sales behaviour honestly. A senior CV should make scale visible through portfolio value, team size, territory, strategic accounts and sustained performance rather than relying on a more impressive title.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order with the qualification, subject, institution and completion dates. There is no single named academic qualification in the supplied evidence that applies to every salesman role, so avoid presenting one route as a universal entry condition. Experienced candidates can usually keep this section compact. Early-career applicants may add selected modules, projects, presentations or society work when these provide honest evidence of research, persuasion, numeracy or customer contact.

Technical sales deserves more detail because the product itself changes the evidence an employer needs. For roles selling technical products or services, sales staff need enough technical ability to understand and explain their organisation's portfolio and systems. A CV can demonstrate this through relevant study, structured workplace learning, product training or a project in which the candidate translated technical detail for a customer. State what you learned and how you applied it instead of listing a course title with no context.

Sales work can also involve assessing and qualifying leads by understanding a client's business needs, then advising how suitable products, tools or techniques may meet them. Negotiation, objection handling, closing and awareness of markets and competitors are further areas that education or training examples can support. Where a course covered these subjects, add a short note beneath it and connect the learning to a real exercise or workplace outcome.

Business sales executives selling technical products and services are classified as a Level 3 Technical Occupation under the supplied UK occupational context. This is a classification, not a claim that every sales applicant needs a credential with that title. Include the exact term only when it genuinely applies to the role or route you are describing.

A separate certifications section is optional. Because the evidence does not support a named certification from the permitted allow-list, use generic entries such as employer sales training or product training only when they are accurate, and give the provider and completion date. Do not invent an issuing body or turn short internal training into a professional qualification.

Keep immigration-route information out of the education section unless it directly affects the application. For vehicle and parts salespersons and advisers, including car salesmen, the supplied UK rule states that the occupation is not eligible for the Skilled Worker route. That narrow rule should not be generalised to other sales roles. If it is relevant, check the application context separately rather than presenting immigration status as a qualification.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing routine sales duties without showing the result, such as writing "contacted prospective customers" with no indication of what happened next.

InsteadLink the activity to a defensible outcome: qualified leads, meetings booked, conversion rate, revenue, target performance or repeat business. Use only figures you can explain at interview.

  • AvoidSending the same salesman CV to retail, technical, field and business sales vacancies.

InsteadMatch the skills and evidence to the sales sector and the advertised criteria. A retail application may foreground customer advice and product knowledge, while a larger business sales role may need stronger evidence of lead development, databases, contracts and sales strategy.

  • AvoidFilling the skills section with broad qualities while leaving out practical selling methods.

InsteadBalance interpersonal strengths such as communication and relationship building with specific abilities such as lead qualification, cold calling, email outreach, negotiation, objection handling and CRM use.

  • AvoidNaming sales software without showing how it supported the sales process.

InsteadConnect each relevant tool to a task or outcome. For example, explain how CRM records helped manage leads, maintain customer relationships, track follow-ups or keep the pipeline accurate.

  • AvoidUsing vague opening claims such as "excellent salesman" or "proven people person" without evidence.

InsteadUse the personal statement to identify your sales specialism, relevant experience and strongest result. Quantified target performance or revenue is useful when the figure is accurate and defensible.

  • AvoidPacking the page with long paragraphs, decorative graphics or inconsistent headings that slow down scanning.

InsteadUse a familiar, skimmable structure with clear contact details, a personal statement, reverse-chronological employment history, a focused skills section and education.
