Format and structure

Use reverse-chronological order: most recent role first. Keep to one page if you have fewer than five years of experience; two pages for 10+ years. A UK project engineer CV carries no photo, no date of birth, and no references line (provide those separately when asked).

Sections to include

Personal statement

Lead with your sector (construction, utilities, renewables, oil and gas, manufacturing) because a project engineer's value is domain-specific. State your years of experience, headline tools (Primavera P6 is the gold standard for programme management), and chartership status or trajectory (working towards CEng signals technical authority). Keep it to 2–3 sentences.

Experience bullets

Every bullet should show you owned scope, schedule, or cost on a named project. State the project value in pounds (or USD for oil and gas) and lead with an action verb, the tool or method you used, and a quantified outcome.

Skills

Split your skills into technical (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit/BIM), planning (MS Project, Primavera P6), and PM methods (PRINCE2, APM PMQ). Spell software names exactly as the job ad does (Primavera P6, not Oracle scheduler) to clear ATS keyword matching. Include your health-and-safety credentials (CSCS card, SMSTS/SSSTS, NEBOSH, CDM 2015 awareness) because these are often hard gates on UK site-based roles.

Education and certifications

List your degree, institution, dates, and grade. If your degree is accredited by a professional body (JBM for civils, IMechE for mechanical, IET for electrical), state that, it signals you are on the CEng pathway. Put project-management and safety certifications (PRINCE2, NEBOSH, SMSTS) in a separate Certifications section so they are not buried.

What to leave out

Do not include a photo, date of birth, marital status, or national insurance number. Do not write References available on request (that is assumed). Do not list hobbies unless they demonstrate leadership or sector-relevant skills (e.g. volunteer STEM ambassador, IMechE mentor).

The result-plus-metric pattern

Project engineers are judged on delivery: did you bring the project in to spec, on programme, and within budget? Every bullet should show you owned one of those three levers on a named project, with a concrete outcome.

Weak (lists duties): Responsible for site coordination and contractor management.

Strong (shows delivery): Coordinated 8 subcontractors via daily planning meetings, completing M&E installation 3 weeks ahead of programme with zero defects at handover.

Weak (vague): Managed project budget and costs.

Strong (quantified): Monitored contractor valuations and reconciled against £2.4M budget monthly, identifying and challenging a £28k over-claim that was withdrawn before payment.

Weak (task-focused): Supported commissioning activities.

Strong (outcome-focused): Led commissioning of HVAC and controls, completing performance testing 4 weeks early and enabling client operational acceptance ahead of target.

Before and after examples

Action verbs for project engineers

Led, delivered, coordinated, managed, chaired, monitored, tracked, resolved, completed, commissioned, recovered (programme slip), identified (cost variance), challenged (over-claim), maintained (zero LTI record), achieved (performance target), enabled (early handover).

Avoid passive constructions (was responsible for, involved in, supported) and generic verbs (helped, worked on, participated in). Show what you owned and what the outcome was.

Education

List your degree, institution, dates, and grade. If your degree is accredited by a professional body (Joint Board of Moderators for civils, IMechE for mechanical, IET for electrical), state that explicitly, it signals you are on the CEng pathway and separates you from a non-accredited graduate.

If you completed a placement year or final-year project relevant to project delivery (design-and-build, cost analysis, BIM coordination), mention it in a bullet under your degree. Recruiters want to see you have applied engineering knowledge to real delivery problems.

Certifications that matter

Project management: PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner are the UK standard. APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) are strong alternatives. Agile certifications (e.g. AgilePM) are relevant if you work in manufacturing or digital infrastructure.

Health and safety: SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) or SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) are expected for site-based roles. NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate signal serious safety competence. CDM 2015 awareness is a baseline; Principal Designer awareness is a plus if you coordinate design and construction.

CSCS card: State your card type (green labourer, black manager, gold advanced craft) and expiry date. Many UK sites will not let you through the gate without one.

Chartership: If you hold CEng or IEng status, list it prominently (in your name line or personal statement). If you are working towards it, state that with the institution (e.g. working towards CEng with IMechE). Chartership signals technical authority and is a genuine differentiator versus a project manager who came up purely through PM.

Where to put certifications

Create a separate Certifications or Professional Qualifications section after Education. List the certification name, issuing body, and year obtained. Do not bury PRINCE2 or NEBOSH in a generic Skills list, recruiters and ATS scan for these as hard requirements.
