How to write a retail assistant CV
A UK retail assistant CV should be one to two pages, reverse-chronological, and lead with customer service proof. No photo, no date of birth. Open with a personal statement that names the retail sub-sector you're targeting (high-street fashion, supermarket, or luxury) and one concrete number (sales uplift, till accuracy, or shift coverage). Follow with your experience section, skills, education, and any retail certifications.

Writing your experience
Every bullet should tie back to the customer or a number. Retail hiring managers want proof you can serve, sell, and stay calm when the shop floor is busy. Use the result-plus-metric pattern: what you did, the outcome, and the number that proves it.

Action verbs for retail assistants
Use verbs that show customer focus, sales drive, and operational grip: served, processed, exceeded, increased, reduced, maintained, covered, restocked, balanced, resolved, recommended, trained, coordinated, achieved. Avoid passive phrasing like "responsible for" or "duties included."
Show peak-period resilience
Retail employers screen hard for people who stay calm under pressure. Explicitly mention juggling multiple tasks during sales events, holiday rushes, or Saturday trade. Example: "Led the shop floor during Black Friday, coordinating till coverage, stock replenishment, and customer service for 500+ daily customers."
Quantify upselling and product knowledge
Don't just claim you upsell. Show the result: "Increased upselling results by 25% through recommending complementary items at the till and applying product knowledge during customer interactions."

Most retail assistant roles require a minimum of two GCSEs (Maths and English, grade 4 or above). List your GCSEs with grades, most recent first. If you have A-Levels or a degree, include them, but retail employers care more about shop-floor skills and certifications than academic qualifications beyond the minimum.
Certifications that matter
Retail certifications signal commitment and readiness. The most valued are:
- Retailer Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship (British Retail Consortium), the standard entry qualification for retail assistants.
- Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills (Management), for senior or supervisory roles.
