Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open by naming the Care Assistant vacancy and explaining why [specific employer priority] interests you. Follow with [relevant achievement] that matches the advert. This might involve monitoring someone's condition by taking their temperature, pulse, respiration or weight, but mention only tasks you have performed. Address a named recipient if the vacancy gives one; otherwise, use Dear Hiring Manager.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement and employer research. For each one, explain what you did and what changed, adding [measurable result] if you have one. You could use evidence of supporting daily life through personal care, mobility, meals, or social and physical activities. If the vacancy involves adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, dementia or other mental health conditions, include relevant experience only when you can substantiate it. Before submitting, check that the details match your Care Assistant CV example.

Build the body

Keep the body simple. Start with why this vacancy interests you, then use one or two paragraphs to show what you can do and how it relates to the advert. If you are starting out, evidence can come from a health and social care course, a work placement, volunteering or a project. Career changers should briefly explain the move, then connect a previous responsibility to recent preparation for care work. For an internal application, choose a recent achievement that shows you are ready for the advertised responsibility. Finish with a short statement about the contribution you hope to make.

Format it

For an online UK application, use a greeting, three or four short paragraphs, a conventional sign-off and your typed name. You can leave out postal contact details if the application system already collects them. Sign off with Yours sincerely when writing to a named person. After Dear Hiring Manager or Dear Sir or Madam, use Yours faithfully. Always follow the instructions on the application form.

Close and sign off

Close with one practical contribution you could make in the role, such as noticing changes in a person's physical, social or emotional needs and escalating concerns appropriately. Keep the tone measured: state your interest without flattering the employer or repeating evidence from the body. Then check spelling, grammar, placeholders and every factual claim. If you reach the next stage, use the Care Assistant interview preparation guide to turn the evidence from your application into clear interview examples.
