Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Dental Assistant vacancy, [Company name] and one genuine reason for applying. A useful opening gives the reader a clear connection between [specific employer priority] and your most relevant evidence; it does not flatter the employer or make an unsupported claim.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the advertisement and employer research. Support each one with a specific action and result. Relevant evidence might concern chairside support, patient reassurance, preparation of instruments and materials, infection control or record keeping, but include only work you have actually done. Check that the evidence in your covering letter agrees with your Dental Assistant CV.

Build the body

Use two or three short body paragraphs. Start with your strongest relevant example, explain what you did and give [measurable result]. Then connect the example to the advertised work. Early-career applicants can use a project, training or volunteering; career changers should explain the deliberate transition; internal applicants should show how a current achievement prepares them for greater responsibility.

Format it

For an online application, use a greeting, a concise three-to-four-paragraph letter, a conventional closing and your typed name. Use "Yours sincerely" after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully" after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Proofread the final application for spelling and grammar. The Dental Assistant salary guide can help you research the role before tailoring your application.

Close and sign off

End with a direct statement of interest in discussing the vacancy. Do not introduce fresh evidence in the final lines. Before submitting, compare the letter with the advertisement and use the Dental Assistant interview preparation guide to turn its strongest claims into examples you can explain.

03
