How to write a dental assistant CV

Choose a clear structure

For most applicants, a reverse-chronological dental assistant CV is the clearest choice: place your latest employment first, then work backwards through earlier roles and education. A skills-based layout can be useful for an entry-level applicant with no work experience, provided it still gives dates and makes the source of each skill clear. Aim for one or two pages, using short sections, consistent dates and enough white space for quick reading.

SectionWhat to include
Contact detailsName, UK location, mobile number, professional email and an optional professional profile link
Personal statementYour level, relevant setting, strongest evidence and the type of contribution you can make
ExperienceJob title, dates, employer, location and achievement-led bullets
SkillsA focused selection supported by examples elsewhere in the CV
EducationAwarded qualification, institution and completion dates
ExtrasRelevant training, languages or volunteering only when they strengthen the application

Open with contact details, followed by a personal statement of two or three sentences. In the experience section, show procedure support, instrument sterilisation, patient education and dependable clinic organisation where these match your background. State the title, employment dates, employer name and location for every position.

Use the skills section to reinforce evidence rather than repeat a list of duties. Include abilities such as following procedures, organisation, communication and basic dental medical knowledge only when you can demonstrate them. Present education in reverse order and distinguish completed awards from courses still in progress. Keep optional extras brief and relevant.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Dental assistant with four years of experience supporting busy general dental teams, preparing treatment areas and maintaining accurate treatment records. Confident in chairside instrument transfer, patient reassurance and instrument sterilisation, with a record of helping the practice keep appointments moving smoothly while giving nervous patients calm, clear explanations.

Too generic

Hard-working dental assistant looking for a new opportunity in a good practice. I am friendly, organised and work well with people. I have many useful skills, learn quickly and would be a great addition to any team.

Writing your experience

Write each experience bullet as a compact piece of evidence: begin with what you did, add the setting or scale, then state the result. The figure might be a patient count, appointment volume, turnaround time, record-accuracy result or reduction in avoidable delays. Use only numbers supported by your own records or recollection; a precise but invented metric weakens the whole CV.

Routine dental assistant work can produce strong bullets when the outcome is clear. Procedure support may cover timely instrument transfer and management of suction equipment. Sterilisation evidence can explain the volume of instruments processed or the consistency of completed checks. Patient-facing bullets can cover comfort, oral-care explanations or follow-up appointments. Where the role included them, treatment records, billing support and radiograph processing can also provide useful evidence for a dental hygiene CV.

BeforeAfter
Helped the dentist during treatmentsSupported two dentists across 24 daily appointments, preparing materials and transferring instruments without delaying planned chair time
Responsible for sterilising equipmentCleaned, disinfected and sterilised an average of 90 instruments per shift, completing every recorded cycle check during the review period
Booked patient appointmentsScheduled and confirmed 45 weekly follow-up appointments, reducing unfilled slots from six per week to two over three months

The improved versions work because they identify an action, define its scope and connect it to an outcome. If you cannot verify a percentage, use a defensible count or describe the operational result without a number.

Choose direct verbs such as prepared, assisted, sterilised, documented, scheduled, processed, reassured, explained, coordinated and maintained. Avoid vague openings such as "helped with", "worked on" or "responsible for". For current work, use present tense; for previous positions, use past tense. Keep each bullet to one or two lines and vary the evidence, so the section covers clinical support, patient contact and practice administration rather than repeating the same duty.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order, giving the exact awarded title, institution and completion year. If you are still studying, state the expected completion date clearly. Do not turn a short course into a clinical qualification, and do not imply that an attendance or completion certificate authorises clinical practice.

Requirements can vary by vacancy and applicant route. One UK practice in the supplied research asked qualified applicants for qualified certification in dental nursing and up-to-date CPD, while also considering trainees. Treat that as an employer-specific condition, not a universal entry rule. Read each advert carefully and reproduce its wording accurately in your application where it applies to you. See the dental nurse CV guide for related qualification guidance.

Dental Assistant – Level 3 Training from Learningidol provides theoretical knowledge only. It does not confer a clinical qualification, GDC registration, statutory authority to practise as a Dental Assistant or guaranteed employment. Learners who complete that training may, following the provider's optional advice, list the Reed Courses Certificate of Completion issued by Reed Courses to support a CV or job application and share it on LinkedIn. Keep the course and certificate under a training or professional development heading, separate from awarded clinical qualifications.

A clean entry might show the course title, provider, completion date and a short description of relevant study. For CPD, record only activity you have completed and can document. If a vacancy requests a role-specific qualification or relevant licence, place it near the top of the education section so the reader can find it quickly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing chairside duties without showing the procedures supported, the volume handled or the result.

InsteadName the type and scope of procedure support, then add a defensible result. For example, state the average number of appointments supported per shift and how your preparation helped the clinic start on time.

  • AvoidWriting "responsible for sterilisation" but giving no evidence of the actual work.

InsteadDescribe instrument cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation precisely. Add useful context such as the number of instrument sets processed, the frequency of checks or an improvement recorded by the practice.

  • AvoidTreating patient care as a vague claim such as "good with people".

InsteadShow how you listened to symptoms or anxieties, explained instructions patiently and helped people settle in the dental chair. Use feedback or another figure only when you can defend it.

  • AvoidMentioning radiography without making the candidate's scope clear.

InsteadSeparate experience processing images from experience taking them. If you took dental x-rays, state the relevant training and describe patient positioning, image clarity and safety practice accurately.

  • AvoidLeaving administrative work disconnected from clinical outcomes.

InsteadLink scheduling, record updates and follow-up appointments to chair use, accurate handovers or fewer booking gaps. This shows how administrative care supports the working day.

  • AvoidUsing one generic dental assistant CV for every vacancy.

InsteadMatch the personal statement, skills and recent evidence to the advertised mix of chairside support, sterilisation, patient communication, records and appointment work. Keep every claim truthful.
