Role cover letter

Finance cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 6 September 2026

A strong finance cover letter connects the vacancy to evidence from your own work, study or projects. Review your finance CV first, then use this guide to choose details that add useful context rather than repeat it.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the finance vacancy at [Company name] because your focus on [specific employer priority] matches the work I want to continue.

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open with the finance vacancy and a specific reason for choosing the organisation. Then give your strongest relevant fact. Pick evidence that suits the post: you might mention work involving controls, cost analysis, investment appraisal or business partnering. State what you did and the result, but do not imply that every finance role covers the same work. Skip flattery and claims you cannot support.

Choose your evidence

Read the advertisement and pick the responsibilities it stresses. Then choose one example that proves you can handle a closely related task: say what you did, how you approached it and what changed. Tailor the evidence to the post. For instance, a senior local-authority vacancy may ask for strategic advice, accounts closure, statutory returns, reports or process improvement, but those duties should not be treated as standard across finance roles. Include only experience you can substantiate.

Build the body

Use two focused body paragraphs. In the first, describe one relevant action, how you approached it and what changed. In the second, explain how that evidence would help with an advertised responsibility. Career changers can connect a previous responsibility to recent preparation, such as a relevant AAT accounting qualification, without presenting that route as essential. Early-career applicants can draw on study, volunteering or project work and concentrate on what they learned. Internal applicants should choose an achievement that shows they are ready for the position's added responsibility. Keep both paragraphs specific: one well-developed example is more convincing than a list of loosely related skills.

Format it

For an online UK application, keep the letter concise. Use a greeting, three or four short paragraphs, a closing and your typed name. If you address the hiring manager by name, finish with "Yours sincerely". After "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam", use "Yours faithfully". Before mentioning a qualification, check that it is relevant to the vacancy.

Close and sign off

Close with one direct sentence about how your evidence relates to the vacancy, or name a priority you would like to discuss. Avoid repeating your opening. Before sending the letter, check the spelling and grammar, remove repeated wording and make sure any qualification you mention matches the vacancy rather than assuming the same requirements apply to every finance role.
