Why this works

The CV establishes the candidate's commercial remit, multi-entity scale, systems knowledge, team leadership and measurable results without allowing routine finance duties to crowd out the strongest evidence.

Continue writing your CV
Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with finance study, numerical ability, transferable experience and the type of junior remit sought. A graduate finance CV should use specific evidence rather than broad claims about enthusiasm.Define the finance specialism, leadership scope, operating environment and strongest measurable outcomes. Mention professional status clearly when it applies.
Experience evidenceShow accurate data entry, reconciliations, double-entry bookkeeping, ledger work, payment checks or assistance with routine finance duties. Use modest measures that you can verify.Show ownership of reporting, controls, forecasting, business partnering or finance leadership. Explain the scale, decision-making audience and effect on the organisation.
MetricsUse evidence such as transaction volumes, reconciliation accuracy, processing time and deadlines met. Figures should come from records or work you can explain at interview.Use measures tied to reporting cycles, cash flow, forecast performance, control improvements, team scope or multi-entity complexity. Connect each figure to a business result.
Skills and systemsPrioritise core finance processes, Excel, data handling and ERP systems used during study, placements or early employment. Do not claim proficiency that you cannot demonstrate.Keep relevant systems visible, but give more space to business partnering, stakeholder reporting, controls, forecasting and ownership of reliable end-to-end processes.
Employer and stakeholder contextBriefly explain an unfamiliar employer, the finance tasks handled and who relied on the work. This helps an entry level finance CV make limited experience easier to assess.Describe the sector, entity structure, reporting audience, budgeting cycle and senior-stakeholder exposure where relevant. Client-facing roles should also show the service context.
Risk and compliance evidenceFor relevant Financial Services roles, show awareness of rules, appropriate conduct and the market or operational risks connected with the work. For relevant Financial Services roles, demonstrate how regulatory understanding, conduct and market or operational risk informed oversight, controls or decisions.

How to write a finance CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological format with consistent headings, dates and spacing. Two pages will suit many candidates, although a graduate finance CV or entry level finance CV may fit comfortably on one. Put your name, UK city, mobile number, email address and professional profile link at the top. Follow these with your personal statement, skills, employment history, education and relevant additional information. Leave out your photo, date of birth and full postal address.

SectionWhat earns its place
Personal statementTarget role, career level, finance remit and one or two relevant results
SkillsFinance methods, systems and analytical strengths you have used
ExperienceEmployer context, scope, actions and measured outcomes
EducationMost recent qualification first, with useful study evidence where relevant
ExtrasLanguages, volunteering or professional activity that supports the application

Tailor the opening to the vacancy. State the type of finance work you have handled instead of relying on a broad title. Depending on your background, this could include reconciliations, reporting, controls, risk management, audit support, budgeting, forecasting, management accounts or business partnering. An entry level finance CV can draw on coursework, placements and transferable work, provided you explain the connection.

Give enough employer context to make each result meaningful. Mention the sector, reporting audience, number of entities, close cycle or budget scope when you can verify it. Make relevant finance systems and tools easy to find, including Excel or ERP systems where these match your experience, but explain how you used them. A software list without context is weak evidence.

If you are part-qualified or qualified by experience, place that status where it can be found quickly and describe it accurately. Do not imply completion or membership that you do not hold. Recent graduates can give education more space and add a substantial finance project; experienced candidates should keep older study concise.

Use vacancy language selectively throughout your finance CV template. Repeat accurate terms that match your work, then check every date, figure, heading and contact detail before applying. Finance applications benefit from especially careful proofreading because attention to detail, quality and compliance are part of the work.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Analytical finance assistant with two years' experience supporting month-end reconciliations, purchase ledger processing and management reporting for a multi-site organisation. Reduced unresolved invoice queries by 24% through a clearer tracking process and now seeks a finance officer position with broader reporting and forecasting exposure.

Too generic

Hard-working finance professional looking for a new challenge. I am good with numbers, work well alone or in a team and want to develop my career at a successful company.

Writing your experience

Finance bullets work best when they answer four practical questions: what did you do, what was the scope, what changed and how did you measure the result? A useful pattern is action verb + finance process + scale or frequency + outcome. The measure might be closing time, error rate, aged debt value, invoice volume, forecast variance or number of entities. Use records you can verify rather than reconstructed estimates.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for reconciliationsReconciled 12 bank and control accounts each month, clearing 95% of exceptions before the close deadline
Helped with invoicesProcessed an average of 420 supplier invoices a month and cut the query backlog from 68 items to 29
Produced reports for managersBuilt a weekly cost report for six budget holders, cutting manual preparation by four hours per cycle

The revised bullets give the reader a defined unit of work and a believable result. They show ownership without inflating seniority. Junior finance CV examples can cover entering and collating accounting data, reconciling figures, basic double-entry bookkeeping, maintaining sales or purchase ledgers, checking payments and assisting accountants with routine duties. Recording cash transactions may also be relevant where it formed part of the job.

At finance officer level, useful evidence may include helping with forecasts, dealing with payroll, invoices, expenses or VAT, resolving contractor payment issues and preparing material for audit support. Keep the distinction between ownership and assistance clear. If you prepared schedules for an audit, say so; do not imply that you led the audit.

Choose precise verbs: reconciled, analysed, processed, reviewed, investigated, resolved, prepared, forecast, reported, controlled, automated and presented. Replace vague openings such as "helped with" or "involved in" with your exact contribution.

Senior candidates still need context, not merely larger numbers. Identify the reporting audience, number of entities, budget cycle, close timetable or stakeholder group when those details are accurate. For example: "Redesigned the monthly reporting timetable across five entities, bringing board-pack completion forward by two working days." That sentence shows scale, judgement and consequence.

Check that every number has a purpose. "Processed 500 invoices" describes volume; "processed 500 invoices monthly while reducing overdue approvals by 18%" explains performance. When no defensible outcome figure exists, quantify scope and state why the work mattered, such as meeting a deadline, clearing an exception or giving a budget holder more reliable information.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order with the institution, qualification, field and dates. Recent graduates can add relevant assessed work, a strong result or concise project evidence. Experienced candidates can shorten older education so that recent employment remains the centre of the finance CV.

A Finance degree can demonstrate the ability to manipulate numerical data, understand statistical concepts, locate and analyse information, and present qualitative and quantitative findings with commentary. It can also provide evidence of research, communication, presentation and teamwork. Show this through a specific piece of work rather than repeating a broad skills claim. For example, give the question examined, the dataset or method used and the practical output.

Programme structures differ. Some Finance degree students who take specific modules may gain partial progress towards professional qualifications or begin working towards professional certifications. State that connection only when your programme documentation confirms it, and describe the extent precisely. A module is not the same as a completed professional credential.

For Finance degree students progressing to Honours in years 3 and 4, Advanced financial modelling and the Finance case study are core courses under the grounded programme route. Those students may also apply their learning through a final-year dissertation or project in finance. Include any of these titles only if they appear on your own academic record, followed by a short explanation of the work.

Separate completed study from work still in progress. Give the official title, institution, dates and result where useful; for ongoing study, state the expected completion date plainly. If you hold a role-specific qualification, or have a formally documented part-qualified or qualified-by-experience status, make its wording accurate and easy to locate. Never turn partial study into a completed credential.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidUsing a broad title such as "Finance" without identifying the actual specialism or remit.

InsteadState whether your work covered FP&A, management accounts, reporting, controls, audit support, commercial finance, statutory work or business partnering. Match the wording to work you have genuinely performed.

  • AvoidListing duties without explaining the finance environment, scale or result.

InsteadAdd useful context such as the number of entities, reporting audience, budgeting cycle, month-end timetable or audit preparation workload. Follow this with a result and a figure you can defend.

  • AvoidBurying finance systems and tools in dense paragraphs, or allowing a long software list to dominate the first page.

InsteadGive relevant systems and tools a concise, easy-to-scan skills section. Name Excel and ERP systems where relevant, then prove how you used them within experience bullets.

  • AvoidHiding professional status where it applies to you.

InsteadIf you are ACCA, CIMA or ACA qualified, make that qualification easy to find. Part-qualified and qualified-by-experience applicants should also place their status prominently and describe it accurately.

  • AvoidSubmitting a finance CV with inconsistent dates, formatting errors, omitted contact details or avoidable typos.

InsteadCheck every date, heading, number and contact field against your source information before applying. Read the exported document once more to catch layout or formatting faults.

  • AvoidWriting an informal or highly decorative finance CV that makes evidence difficult to scan.

InsteadUse restrained formatting, clear headings and reverse-chronological experience. Let precise evidence carry the document, with the level of formality expected across finance roles.
