Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying because your focus on [specific employer priority] matches how I work: I test design ideas and change course when the evidence calls for it.

Evidence

On [relevant project], I used [relevant tool] to create mock-ups and test them with research and analytics. The findings changed my initial approach, and the revised design delivered [measurable result]. I then explained the evidence behind my decisions to colleagues and worked with them through further rounds of feedback.

Contribution

At [Company name], I would use the same approach on [team objective]. I would test early drafts, listen to users and colleagues, and revise the work when the findings point elsewhere.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss what I could bring to your design team.

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Open with the Graphic Designer vacancy and a specific reason you chose the employer, drawn from its work, service or advertised priorities. Then give your strongest evidence for the role. This might be a project where you used research or analytics to shape an idea, produced a mock-up and revised it after testing. State what you did and the result instead of relying on general enthusiasm.

Choose your evidence

Match each advertised priority to one concrete piece of evidence. Describe the brief, your decisions and the result, then explain how you communicated those decisions to colleagues, users or stakeholders. Where relevant, show how you considered user needs, accessibility guidance or other standards that applied to the work. A foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in a design-related subject is one route into graphic design. A relevant college course may instead help you apply for a design assistant position and build a portfolio.

Build the body

Build the letter in three or four short paragraphs. Open with the vacancy and your reason for choosing the employer, then spend most of the letter on evidence. Describe a project where you used research or analytics to test an idea, produced a draft or mock-up and revised it after feedback. Explain the result and how you presented your decisions to colleagues, users or stakeholders. If you are entering the field, relevant study or portfolio work can supply this evidence. If you are changing careers, briefly connect your previous responsibility to recent design work. Internal applicants should use a current project to show they are ready for the advertised responsibility. Close by stating the contribution you hope to make.

Format it

For an online application, use a greeting, short paragraphs, a conventional closing and your typed name. Choose a plain font and leave enough space between paragraphs to make the letter easy to scan. Before submitting it, check the spelling and grammar, remove repeated words, and replace every placeholder.

Close and sign off

Finish with a brief link between your evidence and what you could contribute in the role. Keep the final sentence direct and specific to the employer.
