Role cover letter

Optician cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 13 September 2026

A strong optician cover letter connects your evidence to the vacancy without repeating your CV. Review your optician CV example and writing guide first, then use the four examples below to shape a concise UK covering letter.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Choose the version that matches your situation

The role stays the same. The evidence changes with your starting point.

Replace every highlighted prompt

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I am applying for the Optician position at [Company name]. Your focus on [specific employer service] appeals to me, and I would bring the experience supported by [qualification held] and [registration held].

Evidence

During [relevant project], I used [relevant skill] to address [specific challenge]. My work led to [measurable result] and strengthened my ability to explain decisions clearly, listen carefully and stay within my professional scope.

Employer fit

I would use that experience to support [specific employer priority]. I also want to prepare for greater responsibility through management and leadership training as my career develops.

I would welcome the chance to discuss how my experience could help your practice.

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Optician position and [Company name] straight away. Give one specific reason for applying, such as [specific employer priority], then identify the evidence you will prove rather than opening with praise or a generic claim.

Choose your evidence

Choose two or three priorities from the job advert and match each one with a project, task or achievement. Say what you did and what changed as a result. Keep claims about professional scope accurate: separate duties covered by your training and registration from those handled by an optometrist, and state any specialist registration precisely. If you are applying as a qualified dispensing optician, name [qualification held] accurately. The regulated route includes completing and passing a GOC-approved qualification in dispensing optics, but do not suggest that you hold a qualification or registration unless you do.

Build the body

Use three or four concise paragraphs: a tailored opening, one or two evidence paragraphs and a closing. An early-career applicant can draw on projects, study or volunteering. A career changer should explain [transition reason] and connect [previous responsibility] to recent preparation. An internal applicant should use a result from [current role] to show readiness for greater responsibility rather than relying on familiarity with the organisation.

Format it

For an online application, include a greeting, focused letter text, a conventional closing and your typed name. Use plain, readable formatting and follow the application system's instructions. Proofread names, spelling and grammar before every submission.

Close and sign off

End with a direct expression of interest in discussing the role. Use "Yours sincerely," after a named greeting and "Yours faithfully," after "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam". Put [Your full name] beneath the closing phrase.
