Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementFocus on supervised optical experience, careful measurement, patient service and the practical skills developed through study or an assistant role.Lead with breadth of dispensing work, independent professional judgement, leadership scope and two or three outcomes that show service quality or operational impact.
Dispensing evidenceShow accurate routine measurements, suitable frame and lens recommendations, clear records and willingness to seek guidance when a case exceeds current competence.Show management of more complex requirements, consistent dispensing standards, review of difficult cases and improvements to accuracy across a team or branch.
Patient careUse examples of listening, explaining options clearly, reassuring nervous patients and providing careful aftercare under appropriate supervision.Demonstrate expectation management, accessible communication, sound triage and referral decisions, and methods used to improve the patient journey across the service.
LeadershipMention dependable teamwork with optometrists, optical assistants and retail colleagues, plus any peer support or shift responsibility.Quantify the optical assistants supervised, explain how work was checked, and show the effect of coaching, workflow changes or quality controls.
AchievementsUse modest, traceable measures such as daily patient volume, record accuracy, turnaround time, positive feedback or fewer avoidable corrections.Use larger-scale evidence such as team performance, reduction in remakes, service capacity, training completion, compliance checks or sustained patient outcomes.
Skills sectionPrioritise the measurements, product knowledge, record-keeping and communication skills already used in practice; avoid claiming unsupported independence.Prioritise complex dispensing judgement, referral awareness, supervision, quality assurance, regulatory compliance and service improvement, backed by recent experience.

How to write an optician CV

Use a clean, professional layout and reverse-chronological order. Two pages suit most experienced candidates, although one page may be enough if you are at the start of your career. Put your contact details first, then your personal statement, skills, employment history, education and relevant extras. Leave out your photo, date of birth and full postal address.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, strongest relevant evidence and target role
ExperienceRecent roles first, supported by concise achievements
SkillsTechnical and patient-facing abilities matched to the vacancy
EducationAwarded qualifications, current study and clear dates
ExtrasRelevant languages, volunteering or professional development

Keep the personal statement to three or four lines. Name the work you do well and back one claim with a result; a profile that could belong to any retail applicant is too broad.

Give most space to recent optical work. Earlier retail or healthcare administration experience can still help when it demonstrates accurate records, thoughtful product advice, patient communication or calm service. Use measurable results where you have reliable evidence, and include only figures you could explain at interview.

Choose skills from the vacancy rather than pasting in a generic list. Depending on your genuine experience, useful evidence may include precise dispensing measurements, lens and frame recommendations, adjustments, minor repairs, record keeping, accessible product explanations and cooperation with the wider optical team.

List each qualification with its exact title, institution and completion date. If you are still studying, state your expected completion date clearly. Keep additional information brief and relevant.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Patient-focused dispensing optician with five years' experience reviewing spectacle prescriptions, taking precise measurements and recommending suitable frames, lenses and coatings. Brings clear product explanations, careful records and dependable aftercare, with a documented 12% reduction in remakes at a busy practice.

Too generic

Friendly and hardworking optician looking for a new challenge. I work well alone or in a team, have excellent communication skills and can complete any task given to me.

Writing your experience

Your experience section should show what changed because of your work. Begin each bullet with an active verb, describe the task and its scope, then add the result. Good verbs for this role include advised, measured, dispensed, adjusted, repaired, reviewed, referred, trained, supervised and resolved.

Use numbers taken from records you can defend, such as appointment data, documented feedback, audits or practice reports. Counts, waiting times, remake rates and team size can be useful. Never invent a percentage because a quantified bullet looks stronger.

BeforeAfter
Helped customers choose glassesAdvised an average of 18 patients each day on suitable frame, lens and coating options, supporting a documented 94% on-time collection rate
Adjusted and repaired framesCompleted about 35 frame adjustments and minor repairs each week, resolving 88% at the first visit
Trained optical assistantsCoached four optical assistants on measurement records and handover checks, cutting incomplete records by 20% over six months

The revised bullets make the action, workload and outcome easy to see. They also reflect useful dispensing evidence: reviewing spectacle prescriptions, discussing suitable optical options, taking measurements, recording requirements and providing aftercare. Clear product explanations and realistic expectation management deserve space when they formed part of your work.

Junior candidates can draw results from placements, supervised practice or transferable customer service. For example, state how many patients you supported, how many records you checked or what documented feedback you received. Senior candidates should show leadership and scale where these genuinely applied, perhaps by supervising optical assistants or improving a checking process.

Keep each bullet to one or two lines and favour four strong points over a long duty list. Remove confidential patient details, explain uncommon abbreviations and avoid claims beyond your own scope of practice.

Education & certifications

Present education in reverse-chronological order. Give the exact awarded title, institution and completion year. If you are still studying, state the expected completion date rather than implying that the award is complete. One short note may cover a relevant placement, assessed practical area or project, but keep the section easy to scan.

For new dispensing opticians in the UK, qualifying involves completing and passing a GOC-approved qualification in dispensing optics, passing all parts of the GOC-approved qualification and obtaining GOC registration. Dispensing optician students follow the GOC route as student registrants from the beginning of their studies. Record only the status that accurately describes you, using the exact wording and dates shown in your documents.

Dispensing opticians who fit contact lenses or provide contact-lens aftercare can undertake further specialist training and enter the specialty register for that area of practice. This is an activity-specific route rather than something to present as relevant to every dispensing post. If it applies to your background, place the verified details beneath your main qualification or in a short professional development section.

Avoid filling this section with unrelated short courses. On an entry-level CV, recent study, placements and assessed practical work may deserve more detail because they provide useful evidence before you have a long employment history. Experienced candidates can normally shorten older education and reserve more space for recent results.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing "dispensing" as a duty without showing accuracy, complexity or outcome.

InsteadGive the context and result. For example, state the prescription or fitting challenge you handled, name the relevant measurements, and add a defensible figure such as remakes reduced or first-time fits achieved.

  • AvoidWriting a retail-heavy CV that says little about patient care or optical judgement.

InsteadBalance commercial experience with prescription review, product guidance, frame and lens recommendations, measurements, aftercare, record-keeping, and referral decisions. This makes the clinical side of your work visible.

  • AvoidUsing vague claims such as "excellent with customers" or "good communicator".

InsteadShow how you explained optical products, managed expectations, reassured a nervous patient or made information accessible. Add a genuine outcome, such as fewer repeat queries or stronger patient feedback, where you have evidence.

  • AvoidLeaving adjustments, repairs and aftercare out of the experience section.

InsteadInclude the work completed after collection, not only the original dispense. Mention adjustments, minor repairs and aftercare advice, then show the effect through a figure you can defend.

  • AvoidPresenting every skill at the same level, regardless of experience.

InsteadMatch the evidence to your seniority. A junior CV can show supervised measurements and reliable records; a senior CV should show complex case judgement, team oversight, service standards and outcomes at scale.

  • AvoidAdding unsupported percentages or sales figures to make achievements sound stronger.

InsteadUse only figures you can explain at interview. If no reliable number exists, specify the patient group, prescription complexity, frequency, team size or process improvement without inventing a result.
