Role cover letter

Personal trainer cover letter example and writing guide

Updated 12 September 2026

A strong personal trainer cover letter connects your experience to the vacancy. Use one clear example to show how you designed a personalised exercise programme, coached someone towards a fitness goal or tracked a client's progress. Add a specific result where possible. Pair the examples below with the Personal Trainer CV guide so your letter and CV support the same application.

Square brackets mark facts only you can supply. Replace each prompt; never send the placeholders unchanged.

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Name the Personal Trainer vacancy and [Company name] in your first sentence. Follow it with one specific reason for applying, drawn from the advert. You might refer to the employer's approach to understanding clients' needs before planning sessions, but only if the vacancy mentions it. Address a named recipient when you have their name; otherwise use "Dear Hiring Manager". Skip flattery and unsupported claims about passion.

Choose your evidence

Pick two priorities from the advert. For each one, describe what you did, how you did it and what changed as a result. Useful evidence might include observing a client's movement, spotting a problem with their technique and explaining how you adapted the exercise. Be specific about your own contribution rather than listing general duties. Mention a qualification only if you hold it. One UK training route is the Personal Trainer Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.

Build the body

Keep the opening brief, then use two body paragraphs and a short closing. In the first paragraph, give one clear example: describe the situation, your action and the result. You might explain how you observed a client's movement and corrected their technique. In the second, connect that evidence to an advertised responsibility, such as designing a personalised exercise programme. Career changers should link one previous responsibility to recent preparation. Early-career applicants can draw on training or a project, while internal applicants should show how a current contribution has prepared them for the vacancy.

Format it

If the application form already collects your address, do not repeat it in the letter. Keep the layout simple and the wording concise. Start with a standard greeting, add your full name beneath the sign-off and check the employer's details, spelling and grammar before you submit it.

Close and sign off

Close by saying you would welcome the chance to discuss the position, then mention the team or one responsibility from the advert. Use "Yours sincerely" if you addressed a named person. After "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam", use "Yours faithfully".
