Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I completed [relevant task], checked stock levels and prioritised replenishment where it was needed most. This led to [measurable result]. I also kept colleagues informed so that we could respond quickly when an item was running low.

Contribution

I would bring this experience to [advertised responsibility], working carefully and keeping the team updated throughout each shift.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my retail experience could help me contribute to your store.

Yours sincerely,

[Your full name]

Write your own covering letter

Opening

Use the exact job title from the advert, whether it says Sales Assistant, shop assistant, store assistant or retail sales assistant, and name [Company name]. Give one concrete reason for applying, tied to [specific employer priority], then lead with [relevant achievement]. Skip flattery and unsupported claims that you are the ideal candidate.

Choose your evidence

Choose the advert's most important responsibilities and back each one with a short example: what you did, how you handled it and what changed. If the vacancy mentions cash handling, till procedures or stock availability, use evidence that shows accuracy and care. For work involving customers, colleagues or local organisations, describe how you communicated and solved a specific problem. Experience from another field still counts when it proves the skill. Focus on what you achieved instead of apologising for not having a retail job title.

Build the body

Keep the main section focused: use one paragraph for your strongest example and add a second only if it proves a different part of the job. An experienced applicant might lead with accurate till work, while someone new to retail can use evidence from another setting. If the advert asks for GCSEs or equivalent, state the qualification you hold; some entry-level roles and apprenticeships do not ask for them. Career changers should briefly explain the move, and internal applicants can show how a recent contribution prepares them for the vacancy. Make sure every example agrees with your Sales Assistant CV. Assess the pay separately using the Sales Assistant salary guide, rather than discussing salary in the letter.

Format it

For an online application, open with a standard greeting and keep the letter to three or four short paragraphs. Use the recipient's name when you know it; if you do not, write "Dear Hiring Manager" instead of guessing. Finish with the correct UK closing and type your full name beneath it. Before submitting, follow any instructions in the application system and check the letter for spelling and grammar.

Close and sign off

Close by saying plainly that you would like to discuss the position. After a named greeting, write "Yours sincerely,". After "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear Sir or Madam", write "Yours faithfully,". Add [Your full name] on the next line.
