Why this works

This sales assistant CV sample shows progression, team leadership, customer service, product advice and measurable commercial results without overstating the candidate's authority.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable customer contact, communication and reliability, then name the type of sales assistant opportunity sought. Keep claims modest and supported by education, volunteering or part-time work.Open with the scale of sales and customer service experience, followed by evidence of leadership, commercial responsibility or sustained results. Use figures that can be verified.
Experience evidenceUse examples such as answering product questions, supporting tills, replenishing stock or helping at an event. Explain the action and outcome even when the experience came from another setting.Prioritise examples involving larger workloads, difficult complaints, sales performance, team support or responsibility for displays, stock and promotions. Show the effect on customers or store results.
Sales evidenceShow that you can understand a customer's need, explain a product clearly and complete a transaction accurately. Do not invent targets or conversion figures.Give defensible evidence of exceeding targets, improving sales activity or helping colleagues sell more effectively. Make your own contribution clear rather than claiming a whole store's result.
Customer serviceDemonstrate polite communication, active listening and a willingness to solve straightforward customer problems. A specific example is stronger than a list of adjectives.Show judgement in complaints, complex enquiries and competing customer needs. Include the volume, response time or outcome where records support the figure.
Team contributionExplain how you worked with others during busy periods, shift handovers, deliveries or promotional activity. Evidence from study or volunteering can work when it is relevant.Show how you organised work, coached colleagues or coordinated sales and service activity. State the size of the team or scope of responsibility only when accurate.
Skills sectionSelect skills that appear in the advert and that you can prove elsewhere in the CV. Give priority to customer service, communication, teamwork, accuracy and basic sales activity.Combine core retail skills with evidence of leadership, sales performance, client service and broader responsibility. Avoid crowding the section with tools or methods that do not appear in your experience.

How to write a sales assistant CV

Use a clear, reverse-chronological CV of no more than two pages. Put your name and contact details first, followed by a short personal statement, relevant skills, employment history, education and any useful additional experience. Leave out your photo, date of birth and other personal details that do not help the employer assess you.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, strongest customer-facing evidence and the value you could bring to this vacancy
ExperienceRecent roles first, with short bullets showing actions, scale and results
SkillsAbilities that match the advert and that you can support with evidence elsewhere
EducationAwarded qualifications, dates and relevant study, presented concisely
ExtrasVolunteering, languages or interests only when they strengthen your application

Read the advert closely before editing your sales assistant CV. Match its wording where it accurately describes your experience, then provide an example for each important requirement rather than copying a list of duties. Customer service, teamwork, verbal communication, careful working and selling ability are useful areas to evidence when the vacancy calls for them. For more guidance on presenting transferable customer-facing experience, see this customer service CV example.

If you have little paid experience, draw on part-time work, volunteering, school projects or community activities. A sales assistant CV with no experience can still show that you have listened to people, solved problems, handled responsibility or worked reliably with others.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Approachable sales assistant with two years' experience supporting customers in a busy homeware shop. Regularly handled more than 45 customer enquiries per shift, kept product information accurate and helped the team finish a seasonal promotion 8% above its internal sales goal. Known for calm complaint handling, dependable teamwork and careful till work.

Too generic

Hard-working and friendly person looking for a sales assistant job. I am good with people, work well alone or in a team and can do any task required. I would like to join a successful company where I can gain experience and develop my career.

Writing your experience

A duty tells the reader what your job involved; an achievement shows how well you did it. Build each bullet around a simple pattern: action, scope and outcome. Start with a direct verb, describe the customer, product or task involved, then add a result. Use figures only when you have records or a clear basis for them.

For example:

  • Before: "Helped customers on the shop floor."
  • After: "Advised an average of 35 customers per shift on product options, helping the department reach its weekly sales goal in 10 of 12 weeks."
  • Before: "Worked on the tills and dealt with returns."
  • After: "Processed up to 70 till transactions per shift and resolved 12 to 15 weekly returns while maintaining accurate paperwork."
  • Before: "Put stock out and made displays."
  • After: "Unpacked and priced deliveries of roughly 250 items a week, then reorganised two promotional displays that sold through three days ahead of plan."

Useful measures include customer volume, transaction numbers, stock quantities, sales against an internal target, response times and the frequency of accurate checks. Context matters: "served 50 customers" says less than "served up to 50 customers during weekend shifts while keeping queues below the store's five-minute target".

Choose verbs that show what you personally did, such as advised, listened, resolved, processed, recommended, arranged, replenished, priced, checked, coordinated and supported. For a current role, use present tense for continuing responsibilities and past tense for completed results. Use past tense throughout earlier positions.

Customer examples can cover product questions, complaints, refunds or quick responses to a request. Operational examples might cover tills, financial transactions, deliveries, stock rotation, product ordering, displays, promotions or store tidiness. Senior candidates should also show the scale of their team support or leadership, but should still include direct evidence of customer and sales outcomes.

Education & certifications

Keep education in reverse-chronological order and record the qualification exactly as awarded, with the institution and completion year. Recent school or college leavers can add a small amount of relevant detail, such as a project involving customers, teamwork, communication, numeracy or digital tools. Experienced applicants should shorten this section so their employment evidence has more room.

The supplied role research does not establish a universally required named qualification, licence, certificate or professional route for sales assistant work. Do not add a credential simply because it appears on another person's sales assistant CV sample. Instead, follow the vacancy: if the advert requests a role-specific qualification, state the exact award you genuinely hold. If you are still studying, write "in progress" and give the expected completion year rather than implying that it has already been awarded.

English, maths and ICT ability have been identified as areas of concern for customer service and sales assistant recruitment, with these abilities expected to matter more as the role's overall skill level rises. Show them through evidence: accurate till work, clear customer communication, stock calculations or confident use of workplace systems. A short course can sit under education or additional training, but name it only when you completed it and can verify the details.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidSending the same sales assistant CV to every employer, even when adverts stress different products, customers or duties.

InsteadRead the advert and person specification closely. Match each relevant requirement with a brief, honest example from employment, education, volunteering or another activity.

  • AvoidListing routine duties without showing whether the work helped customers or the business.

InsteadTurn duties into evidence. State what you did, the scale involved and the result, adding figures only when you can defend them.

  • AvoidClaiming to have good customer service skills but giving no example of listening, answering a question or resolving a problem.

InsteadUse one compact example that shows the customer need, your response and the outcome. Relevant evidence might cover product advice, a quick response or an accurately handled complaint.

  • AvoidIgnoring part-time work or volunteering because it was not a formal sales assistant position.

InsteadInclude relevant unpaid and part-time experience when it proves transferable skills. Focus on customer contact, teamwork, communication, accuracy or responsibility rather than the title alone.

  • AvoidUsing vague phrases such as "hard-working team player" without any context.

InsteadAttach each claimed strength to an action. For example, describe how you supported colleagues during a busy period, kept a customer calm or completed stock work accurately.

  • AvoidSubmitting a CV with spelling, grammar or consistency errors.

InsteadCheck every line carefully, then ask someone else to proofread it. Pay particular attention to employer names, dates, contact details and repeated verb tenses.
