How to write a compliance manager CV

Format and order

Use a clean reverse-chronological layout. Two pages is a useful target, although a longer career may justify a tightly edited third page. Start with contact details, then add a short personal statement, selected skills, employment history, education and relevant extras.

SectionWhat earns space
Personal statementYour level, relevant scope and strongest matching result
SkillsMethods and areas of knowledge supported elsewhere in the CV
ExperienceRecent roles with achievements, scale and outcomes
EducationQualification, institution and dates
ExtrasLanguages, volunteering or publications that strengthen your case

Personal statement

For Compliance Manager applications, use a brief profile that summarises relevant experience and highlights skills most relevant to the role. A Compliance Manager CV profile should closely match the essential requirements in the job advertisement. Keep it to two or three sentences.

Skills

Compliance managers usually possess in-depth knowledge of their organisation's product or service, systems and procedures. Compliance managers usually possess a strong understanding of their company's commercial operations and industry context. Compliance professionals need to understand, interpret and accurately apply relevant laws and regulations to the business. Compliance managers keep themselves updated on changes to regulations and laws that may affect their organisation.

Tailor the skills section instead of filling it with every compliance term you know.

Experience

A Compliance Manager CV should evidence the ability to translate regulations into policies, controls, audits, investigations and training, and to run a compliance programme from policy through enforcement.

Give most space to recent compliance work. A strong employment section connects rules with the policies, controls, reviews, investigations, training or follow-up work you personally handled. Put routine duties in context, then use the bullets for evidence.

Education and extras

Keep education concise once your career history supplies stronger proof. Extras are optional and should have a clear reason for being there.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Compliance manager with six years of experience in construction and property services, including three years owning monitoring plans, policy reviews and investigations. Translates regulatory changes into workable controls and gives directors concise reports they can act on. Reduced repeat control exceptions by 31% after rewriting eight policies and testing the revised procedures.

Too generic

Hard-working compliance professional with excellent attention to detail and communication skills. I am passionate about compliance, work well alone or in a team and want a new challenge where I can develop my career.

Writing your experience

Turn duties into evidence

A useful bullet follows a simple pattern: action + compliance activity + scope + outcome. This gives the reader enough context to judge the work without forcing them to interpret a vague list of responsibilities.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for compliance reviewsCompleted 48 control reviews across six sites, issuing 95% of reports within the five-day target
Helped with staff trainingReworked induction training for 160 employees, raising first-time assessment passes from 76% to 93%
Maintained compliance recordsReindexed 2,300 records and introduced a monthly check, reducing missing evidence cases from 21 to four

The stronger versions identify the task, its scale and the result. They also leave room for sensible questions at interview. A hiring manager can ask how the review worked, what the assessment measured or why records were missing.

Use numbers you can defend

Numbers need not be financial. Review volume, sites covered, actions closed, turnaround time, repeat findings, training attendance and error rates can all make the work concrete. Give a baseline when a percentage might otherwise be misleading. "Cut overdue actions by 67%" is harder to assess than "cut overdue actions from 27 to nine".

Use only figures you can trace to reports, registers, calendars or other records. If the result was not numerical, describe a specific outcome such as approval at first review, adoption of a revised process or closure of an identified gap.

Sharpen vague statements

Compare these revisions:

Before: "Updated policies when regulations changed."

After: "Assessed 12 regulatory updates, revised seven policies and briefed 25 managers before the changes took effect."

Before: "Carried out investigations."

After: "Managed nine investigations from intake to closure, completing eight within 30 days and assigning an owner to every corrective action."

Before: "Worked with operational teams."

After: "Ran monthly action reviews with eight project leads, improving on-time closure from 72% to 91% over two quarters."

Match verbs to your authority

Choose verbs that match your authority: assessed, interpreted, designed, tested, reviewed, investigated, advised, escalated, implemented, monitored, trained, reported, resolved and led. "Supported" is appropriate for junior work, but follow it with the part you completed. A senior CV should make decisions about governance, people and resources visible.

Keep each bullet centred on one result. If a sentence contains several unrelated activities, split it or retain the part that best matches the vacancy. Four sharp bullets usually say more than eight duty statements.

Construction sector responsibilities

If you work in construction, your CV may need to show:

  • Ensure that building projects comply with relevant legislation.
  • Conduct routine site inspections and collect evidence to prove compliance.
  • Communicate with all of a business' employees to ensure they are aware of their roles in compliance.
  • Carry out detailed research and complete documentation and risk assessments.
  • Carry out reviews of processes and adapt plans based on feedback.
  • Maintain records of compliance practices and file documentation with relevant bodies.
  • Produce training materials and share best practice throughout a business.

For each responsibility, add the scale, frequency and outcome.

Education & certifications

Present qualifications accurately

List education in reverse-chronological order with the qualification, institution and completion dates. Junior applicants can add one or two lines about relevant projects or applied learning. Once your employment history supplies stronger evidence, keep this section brief and spend the saved space on recent results.

Apprenticeship route

The Regulatory Compliance Officer apprenticeship standard requires the ability to assess regulatory risks and use risk assessment to guide activities and target resources. If this route applies to you, record the apprenticeship title accurately, identify your training provider and state the completion date. Connect the learning to work you carried out, but do not imply that you completed the route if you attended only part of it.

Other learning

The supplied evidence does not establish a universal degree, licence or named professional certification for Compliance Manager roles. Follow the vacancy instead. If it asks for a role-specific qualification, copy the title accurately and make your status clear. If you are still studying, give an expected completion date.

For short courses or internal professional development, state the exact course title, provider and date. Include an item only when it helps explain your fit for the advertised work. Do not present an internal course as an external certification, and do not crowd the section with unrelated learning.

Application-specific requirements

Candidates for the Technical Compliance Manager (Legionella) role must submit a CV and supporting statement detailing how they meet the essential criteria.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing broad duties such as "responsible for compliance" without identifying the work

InsteadName the controls, sites, policies, cases or employees involved, then add a result you can defend.

  • AvoidCopying the vacancy into the skills section

InsteadSelect terms that fit your record and support them with evidence in the personal statement or employment history.

  • AvoidMaking the role sound purely administrative

InsteadShow where you assessed risk, interpreted a change, challenged a process or recommended an action.

  • AvoidUsing percentages without a baseline

InsteadGive the before-and-after values where possible and retain the source behind every figure.

  • AvoidGiving equal space to every job

InsteadExpand recent compliance work and compress older roles to the transferable evidence that still matters.

  • AvoidFilling the opening paragraph with generic qualities

InsteadUse two or three sentences covering level, scope, relevant evidence and one strong result.
