Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementFocuses on transferable care experience, relevant training, the target setting and a small number of strengths.Leads with years of relevant experience, range of care settings, leadership scope and measurable service outcomes.
Experience evidenceUses placements, volunteering or adjacent service roles to prove reliability, communication and respectful support.Shows responsibility for larger patient groups, complex shifts, staff guidance and improvements sustained over time.
Patient care skillsDemonstrates safe personal care, mobility support, accurate observations and clear escalation within assigned duties.Shows consistent standards across a team or service while retaining direct evidence of patient care and condition reporting.
Team contributionExplains how work supported nurses, doctors and colleagues during individual shifts.Demonstrates coordination across the multidisciplinary team, handovers, workload allocation or support for less experienced colleagues.
MetricsUses modest, defensible measures such as patients supported, shifts completed, records maintained or attendance.Uses broader measures such as team size, ward coverage, audit results, reduced delays or service improvements.
Skills sectionPrioritises practical care, communication, dignity, observations, infection prevention and safe mobility.Adds leadership, coaching, workload coordination, quality monitoring and service improvement where these are supported by experience.

How to write a health care assistant CV

For most Health Care Assistant applications, use a reverse-chronological CV, placing your latest position first. A skills-based layout can work better if you have little or no direct experience because it gives transferable skills, volunteering and training more space. Keep the document easy to scan, usually within two pages, and use plain headings rather than decorative graphics or columns that squeeze the text.

A practical section order is contact details, personal statement, skills, experience, education and training, then relevant additional information. Include your town or city, mobile number, professional email address and optional profile link. Do not include a photograph, date of birth or full street address.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementA short paragraph of two or three sentences, angled towards the vacancy
SkillsRelevant care capabilities supported by evidence elsewhere in the CV
ExperienceEmployer, job title, dates and concise achievement-led bullets
Education and trainingQualification or course, training organisation and completion year
Additional informationRelevant volunteering, languages or other useful evidence

In the personal statement, lead with your level of experience and the setting or client group you know, including experience as a Care Assistant. Select two or three strengths that match the advert instead of filling the paragraph with broad claims such as "caring and hardworking".

For employment history, describe your contribution rather than copying a job description. Give each bullet an action, its scope and an outcome. Use figures only when you can verify them from rotas, records, feedback or another reliable source.

Keep the skills section selective. Relevant areas may include patient care, accurate recording of observations, hygiene and infection prevention, mobility support, communication with patients and families, and work with nurses or wider teams. Mirror the vacancy's wording only where it truthfully describes your experience.

Place recent, relevant education and training ahead of older general qualifications. Give the course name, provider and year. If you are still studying a health qualification, mark it as "current" rather than suggesting that it is complete. Additional sections earn their place only when they strengthen the application.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Health Care Assistant with four years of experience supporting older adults on a busy hospital ward. Confident in personal care, mobility assistance, recording routine observations and reporting changes promptly to nursing staff, with a calm manner that protects each patient's dignity. Now seeking to bring reliable care and clear communication to an inpatient rehabilitation team.

Too generic

I am a caring and hardworking person looking for a Health Care Assistant job. I work well alone or in a team, learn quickly and can do any duties required. I would be a good addition to your organisation.

Writing your experience

Health Care Assistants often perform work that sounds routine until the CV explains its scale and effect. Avoid listing bare duties such as "helped patients" or "took observations". Build each bullet around three parts: a strong action, the care or workload involved, and a result or defensible measure.

A useful pattern is: action + scope + outcome. For example, "Recorded routine observations for up to 14 patients per shift and escalated readings outside agreed parameters promptly to nursing staff." This shows accurate monitoring, workload and communication without making a clinical claim beyond the candidate's role. Health Care Assistants commonly support patient care in hospital or community settings, complement the work of nurses and doctors, and keep healthcare staff informed about changes in patients' conditions. Applicants planning a move into nursing can use this nurse CV guide.

Weak duty statementStronger evidence-led version
Helped patients with washingSupported up to eight ward patients with bathing and personal care each morning while protecting privacy and dignity
Took vital signsRecorded blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen levels for up to 14 patients per shift, passing concerns promptly to nursing staff
Helped at mealtimesAssisted six patients with meals and drinks during each lunch round and completed fluid records before handover

The figures above are examples of structure, not numbers to borrow. Use only measures you can defend. Useful sources include typical caseload, number of people supported on a shift, completion rates, attendance records, documented compliments or time saved through an agreed change. If no number is available, name a concrete outcome: a complete handover, an accurately maintained record or a concern reported through the correct route.

Choose verbs that show what you personally did: supported, assisted, recorded, observed, reported, escalated, reassured, prepared, maintained, coordinated and mentored. Match each verb to your actual authority. "Recorded and reported" is often more precise than language suggesting diagnosis or independent clinical decisions.

Keep four to six bullets for a recent relevant job and fewer for older posts. A junior applicant can draw evidence from retail, hospitality, family support or volunteering, focusing on calm communication, privacy, teamwork and dependable record keeping. An applicant moving from aged care can focus on the care responsibilities that transfer to the vacancy. An experienced applicant should show broader workload, handovers, support for colleagues and improvements they genuinely contributed to. Do not repeat the same personal-care bullet under every position; show how your responsibility developed.

Education & certifications

There are no strict entry qualifications for becoming a healthcare assistant in the UK, so do not hide a strong application beneath a long education section. Good reading, writing and mathematics skills are considered essential for the role, however, and some employers may ask applicants for a GCSE in English, a GCSE in maths or an equivalent qualification. Read each advert carefully and present only the qualifications it requests or that support your application.

List completed qualifications in reverse-chronological order. Give the exact qualification or course title, training organisation and year of attainment. Where useful, add one short line on relevant studied areas or a vocational placement. Do not use vague entries such as "care course completed", and never imply that attendance equals completion. If you are working towards a health qualification, list it as "current" instead of adding an expected award that could be mistaken for a completed credential.

After appointment, workplace training for healthcare assistants can include guidance towards the Care Certificate. Present it according to your actual status. If completed, state the name, training organisation and year; if it forms part of current workplace learning, describe it as current training rather than a finished award.

Two optional awards apply to a specific community Health Care Assistant course route. Applicants on that route can achieve the Certificate of Credit after completing 20 credits. They can achieve the Certificate in Continuous Professional Development after 40 credits, including the Long-Term condition module. These are optional route-specific awards, not universal entry conditions, so include either only when it is genuinely yours and relevant to the vacancy.

Short courses and workplace training can add useful evidence, particularly after you have begun care work. Record the course title, training organisation and date or year, keeping the most relevant and recent items. Avoid crowding the section with expired, duplicated or unrelated attendance records. If a role asks for a role-specific qualification, make its status immediately clear and retain documents that support every entry.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing personal care duties without showing who was supported, the setting or the result.

InsteadAdd scope and evidence, such as the number of patients supported per shift, the type of ward or community caseload, and an outcome you can defend.

  • AvoidUsing a generic personal statement that could belong to any care applicant.

InsteadWrite two or three sentences tailored to the vacancy, naming the relevant care setting, patient group and two or three strengths backed by experience.

  • AvoidWriting "took observations" without explaining which observations were recorded or how concerns were passed on.

InsteadName relevant checks such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature or oxygen levels, then describe accurate recording and prompt reporting to healthcare staff.

  • AvoidLeaving transferable experience off a health care assistant CV with no experience.

InsteadUse a skills-based structure to bring forward relevant training, volunteering and evidence of communication, reliability, dignity and practical support.

  • AvoidClaiming broad clinical competence without explaining scope or evidence.

InsteadDescribe the tasks completed, the setting and the people supported. Include only training, figures and responsibilities that you can verify.

  • AvoidPresenting teamwork as a vague personality trait.

InsteadShow how you communicated with nurses, doctors, patients or families and how that helped maintain continuity of care.
