HR CV example and writing guide for 2026

Updated 7 August 2026

A good HR CV shows how you handle people matters, information and processes, rather than simply saying that you enjoy working with people. This guide explains how to shape an HR personal statement, choose convincing evidence and present qualifications without overstating them.

Why this works

This example shows career progression, leadership across a sizeable workforce and clear evidence of improvements to recruitment, performance, HR operations and people data.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementLead with transferable evidence, relevant study and the type of HR support you can provide. Keep claims modest and specific.State the organisational scope, leadership remit and business outcomes you influenced. Show whether you created, shaped or delivered people strategy.
Experience evidenceUse examples of accurate administration, HR query handling, recruitment coordination, record keeping and support for managers. Placements and transferable work can provide useful evidence.Prioritise outcomes across teams, sites or functions, such as better processes, more useful management information or delivery of a people programme.
MetricsUse manageable measures such as records checked, vacancies supported, queries answered, turnaround time or error reduction.Use measures that reflect scale and accountability, including workforce coverage, programme adoption, service performance, cost control or movement in people KPIs.
Skills emphasisEmphasise HR systems, customer service, active listening, confidentiality, accurate records and dependable process administration.Emphasise organisational context, HR metrics, policy knowledge, consultancy, stakeholder influencing and the development or delivery of suitable HR solutions.
Breadth and specialismShow a sound base across common support tasks without claiming expertise you have not yet developed.Make the balance clear: broad generalist leadership, a defined specialism or responsibility for HR operations. Give enough context to show the depth of your remit.
LeadershipLeadership may appear through owning a task, training a colleague or improving a small process.Show how you advised or influenced managers, led delivery, used evidence to make decisions and coordinated specialist support when a project required it.

How to write a HR CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological layout and aim for two pages unless you are at the start of your career and can make a persuasive case in one. Put your contact details first, followed by a personal statement, core skills, employment history, education and any relevant extras. Leave out your photo, date of birth and full postal address.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, relevant experience, strongest evidence and target role
SkillsA focused selection backed by examples elsewhere in the CV
ExperienceRecent roles first, with short achievement-led bullets
EducationQualifications, institution and dates in reverse order
ExtrasRelevant volunteering, languages or professional development

Keep the personal statement to three or four lines. Match it to the vacancy instead of using a generic paragraph for every application. In employment history, show results from handling queries, records, sensitive information, systems, processes or service improvements. If you are writing a graduate HR CV or an HR CV with no experience, draw on customer service, management, retail, hospitality or office administration, but spell out how that experience transfers.

Keep the skills section selective. Education needs more detail early in your career and less once employment evidence becomes stronger. Extras earn their place only when they support the application.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

HR coordinator with three years' experience supporting employee queries, maintaining accurate records and improving routine people processes. Reduced average query resolution time by 22% after reorganising the case queue and introducing clearer response templates. Trusted with sensitive information and now seeking an HR adviser role with broader responsibility for manager support and process improvement.

Too generic

Friendly and hardworking HR professional who loves working with people. I am a great communicator, work well alone or in a team and am looking for an exciting role where I can grow. I have many useful skills and would be an asset to any company.

Writing your experience

HR experience bullets work best when they connect an action to its scope and result. Start with what you changed or delivered, add enough context to show the size of the task, then finish with a defensible outcome. Numbers can cover volume, time, accuracy, response rates, completion rates or workload, but only use figures drawn from records or evidence you could discuss at interview.

A flat duty such as "Answered employee queries" tells the reader little. A stronger version is: "Resolved an average of 45 employee queries a week and cut cases open beyond five working days from 18 to 7." This identifies the service, workload and result.

Likewise, replace "Maintained employee records" with: "Reviewed 620 employee files, corrected 74 incomplete records and raised documented data completeness from 88% to 98%." For process work, change "Helped with recruitment administration" to: "Coordinated interview scheduling for 36 vacancies and reduced average booking time from four days to two." These are illustrative patterns, not figures to copy.

HR applications benefit from concrete examples of communication, careful handling of sensitive information, record management, issue resolution and process improvement. Evidence might come from direct HR work or, for applicants without it, from customer service, management, retail, hospitality or office administration. Name the transferable behaviour: listening carefully, clarifying a request, updating an accurate record, explaining a process or escalating an issue through the agreed route.

Useful opening verbs include resolved, coordinated, reviewed, reconciled, advised, introduced, shortened, improved, analysed and delivered. Avoid vague openings such as "helped with", "involved in" or "responsible for" when you can identify your contribution. Give senior bullets more scale by showing the teams, managers, processes or organisational goals affected. Junior bullets can be narrower, but they still need a clear action and outcome.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order, giving the qualification, subject, institution and completion year. Recent graduates can add a short line on a relevant project or piece of assessed work; experienced candidates normally need only the core details. Do not bury stronger employment evidence beneath long module lists.

For a UK graduate human resources training scheme, a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in any subject can be used before applying. These are optional routes rather than universal entry requirements. Study in human resources management, business management and human resources, or psychology may give an advantage, but the supplied guidance does not make any of those subjects compulsory.

If you already hold a degree, a postgraduate qualification in human resource management is not essential. Present one if you have it and explain its relevance briefly, but do not imply that every HR applicant needs one.

The Foundation Certificate in People Practice, offered by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), is an optional route aimed at people seeking a first job and getting started as an HR assistant. If you hold it, include the exact title, issuer and completion date. If you are still studying, state that plainly rather than presenting it as completed.

Keep unsupported claims off the page. Check every qualification title and date against your records, and use the wording on the award document. Where a vacancy asks for a role-specific qualification, mirror its wording only when it accurately describes what you hold.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidSaying only that you enjoy working with people. This tells the recruiter little about how you would handle HR work or add value.

InsteadReplace the broad claim with a concrete example involving records, queries, recruitment, process administration or a sensitive conversation. State what you did and the result.

  • AvoidListing routine duties without showing their scale or effect, such as "helped with recruitment" or "updated employee files".

InsteadAdd scope and an outcome: vacancies coordinated, records checked, queries resolved, managers supported or processing time reduced. Use only figures you can defend.

  • AvoidLeaving transferable experience off an HR CV because the previous job was in retail, hospitality, customer service, management or office administration.

InsteadTranslate relevant work into HR evidence. This might include handling confidential details, keeping accurate records, resolving complaints, arranging rotas, training colleagues or answering policy-based queries.

  • AvoidUsing a long skills list with no proof elsewhere in the CV.

InsteadSelect skills that match the vacancy, then support the strongest ones through achievement bullets. If you claim HR systems knowledge, show which records, reports or processes you handled.

  • AvoidDescribing sensitive staff matters in enough detail to identify an individual or expose private information.

InsteadKeep the context anonymous. Explain your action, professional approach and measurable result without naming the employee or revealing personal details.

  • AvoidSending the same generic HR CV for generalist, resourcing, employee relations and HR operations vacancies.

InsteadAdjust the personal statement, skills and most relevant achievements for the advertised remit. Reuse truthful evidence, but change its order and emphasis to fit the role.
