How to write a manager CV

Use a simple, reverse-chronological layout that lets a recruiter find your recent management experience quickly. Two pages will suit many candidates, although relevance matters more than squeezing content onto an arbitrary page count. Use clear headings, ordinary fonts and consistent dates. An ATS-friendly structure is preferable for manager applications.

SectionWhat to include
Contact detailsName, UK location, email, mobile number and optional professional profile URL
Personal statementManagement level, relevant setting, strongest evidence and target role
ExperienceRecent roles first, with concise achievement bullets beneath each position
SkillsA tailored selection supported by evidence elsewhere in the CV
EducationYour most recent relevant qualifications first
ExtrasRelevant languages, volunteering or professional recognition only

Open with a brief manager personal statement instead of a broad career history. In the experience section, use action verbs and bullet points so that ownership and results are easy to scan. Select skills that match the vacancy, then support the important ones with examples involving people, projects, budgets or operational performance. Keep education compact unless you are early in your career, when training and transferable evidence may need more space. Extras should strengthen the application rather than fill a gap.

A manager CV template is a starting point. Adjust the emphasis for each vacancy: a first-time manager can foreground transferable leadership, while a senior candidate should make team size, decision scope and business outcomes immediately visible.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Manager with six years' experience leading customer service and operations teams of up to 18 people. Improved monthly target attainment from 82% to 94% by introducing clearer performance reviews, weekly coaching and a shared reporting dashboard. Seeking an operations management post centred on practical team development and measured service improvement.

Too generic

Hard-working manager looking for a new challenge in a successful company. I am a good communicator, work well with people and can handle many different duties. I believe I would be a great addition to any team.

Writing your experience

Management experience is more persuasive when each bullet shows what changed because of your work. A useful pattern is: action + scope + result + measure. Name the team, budget, process or project you owned, explain what you changed, then give a figure you can verify. Managers commonly set team goals, monitor performance and budgets, guide projects against deadlines, delegate work, coach staff and deal with operational problems. Your bullets should reveal this work instead of merely repeating a job description.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for team performanceSet weekly goals for a 12-person service team and raised target attainment from 84% to 93% within six months
Managed a projectReplanned a branch-refit project across four workstreams, recovered a three-week delay and completed within the approved £75,000 budget
Helped staff developmentIntroduced monthly coaching for eight advisers, cutting the average time to independent case handling from ten weeks to seven

The revised versions identify the action, scale and outcome. They also give the reader useful material for an interview. If a result involved several people, describe your contribution accurately rather than claiming sole credit. Figures could cover delivery time, budget variance, productivity, retention, service levels, complaints or target attainment, but include only measures you genuinely tracked.

Choose direct verbs such as led, coached, delegated, resolved, planned, negotiated, analysed, reduced, improved, delivered and introduced. Vary them naturally and avoid beginning every bullet with "managed". Replace passive phrases such as "was responsible for" with the decision or intervention you made.

Junior candidates can draw on team leader experience, shift supervision, project work, volunteering or periods spent deputising. Senior candidates should show broader decision scope through larger teams, several sites, bigger budgets, competing priorities and sustained performance improvement. At either level, two strong, specific bullets are better than a long list of routine duties.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order, giving the qualification, institution and completion year. Add modules, projects or results only when they strengthen an early-career application; experienced managers can usually keep this section short. If a vacancy asks for a role-specific qualification, reproduce its exact wording only when you hold it and can document it.

There are different routes into management, so do not present one academic path as universal. Under the manager apprenticeship route covered here, successful apprentices achieve a Degree in management and business. English and Maths are required at a minimum of Level 2 for that same route. These conditions apply to the manager apprenticeship, not to every management vacancy. Record Degree in management and business under education and identify the apprenticeship context clearly.

Chartered Manager is an optional professional status issued by CMI. Gaining it involves a holistic assessment underpinned by the CMI Professional Standard for Management and Leadership, with routes that depend on qualifications and experience. If you hold Chartered Manager status, give the exact title and CMI as the issuer in a compact professional development or achievements section. Do not present it as compulsory for management work.

For other courses, avoid padding the page with every short workshop you have attended. Prioritise recent learning that relates directly to the vacancy, and record the title, provider and completion date accurately. Never shorten or rename a credential in a way that could mislead a recruiter.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidListing duties without showing whether the team, project or operation improved.

InsteadTurn each duty into evidence: name the action, give the scope and state a defensible result, such as a deadline met, budget controlled or service measure improved.

  • AvoidDescribing leadership in vague terms such as "managed a busy team".

InsteadState the team size, objectives, management approach and outcome. Use only figures and results that you can explain at interview.

  • AvoidLeaving budgets, deadlines and project milestones out of the experience section.

InsteadShow where you monitored spending, adjusted a plan or kept delivery on schedule. Add the scale and result where records support them.

  • AvoidClaiming strong communication without showing the audience or purpose.

InsteadGive an example of presenting information, giving feedback or influencing a stakeholder, then state what changed.

  • AvoidFocusing on control while saying little about coaching, morale or staff wellbeing.

InsteadInclude evidence of useful feedback, barrier removal, development support or a change that helped the team perform.

  • AvoidUsing a generic skills list that is disconnected from the work history.

InsteadBack important skills with matching examples in the experience section, particularly performance monitoring, delegation, data analysis and problem solving.
