Why this works

This CV links leadership, budget ownership and integrated campaign decisions to clear commercial results, while making the candidate's progression easy to follow.

Junior vs senior: what changes
AspectJuniorSenior
Personal statementAn entry level marketing CV can lead with transferable evidence from relevant study, internships, projects or volunteering, then identify the marketing work the candidate is ready to support.A senior marketing CV should establish leadership scope, commercial judgement and a track record of outcomes, using figures the candidate can explain and defend.
Campaign evidenceShow contributions to audience research, content, scheduling, reporting or campaign delivery. Make your individual contribution clear when the work formed part of a team project.Show how you set campaign direction, selected channels, allocated resources and judged performance across integrated activity.
MetricsUse credible measures from smaller projects, such as engagement, registrations, response rates, content output, deadlines met or time saved. Add enough context to show what you changed.Connect campaign measures to outcomes such as conversion, revenue, retention, ROI or cost reduction. Include the campaign context so the reader can judge the scale of the result.
Leadership and stakeholdersEvidence dependable teamwork and clear communication with colleagues, student societies, volunteers, suppliers or project partners. Focus on your contribution rather than implying leadership you did not hold.Describe team leadership, coaching, deadline control, agency or supplier relationships and influence across functions. Where you owned a budget, show its scale and explain how you allocated the spend.
Skills and keywordsPrioritise methods and tools genuinely used in study, placements or projects, including content, research, data analysis and campaign coordination where relevant.Prioritise integrated campaign management, budget and ROI knowledge, performance evaluation, audience segmentation and decisions about channels, audiences and time horizons.
CV achievement detailA graduate marketing CV can present a substantial project as experience by naming the audience, objective, work completed and verified result.Use compact case-study evidence covering the business context, decision, scale and commercial result. Be ready to explain every campaign number included on the CV.

How to write a marketing CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological marketing CV so a recruiter can find your dates, relevant experience and results quickly. Two pages is a sensible target for most candidates; a graduate marketing CV with limited experience may fit on one page. Begin with your name and contact details, followed by your personal statement, career history, skills, education and selected extras.

SectionWhat earns its place
Personal statementYour level, relevant area of marketing and one substantiated result
ExperienceJob title, employer, location, dates and achievement-led bullets
SkillsTechnical and interpersonal strengths supported elsewhere in the CV
EducationQualification, institution and dates, plus a relevant project if useful
ExtrasPortfolio work, volunteering or other evidence tied to the vacancy

Keep the design restrained. Use clear headings, consistent spacing and an ordinary, readable typeface. Leave out your photo and date of birth, and apply one date format throughout. A marketing CV template should provide structure without dictating your wording.

Your marketing personal statement needs to establish fit quickly. State your level, the kind of marketing work you have done and a result you can explain. Match the emphasis to the vacancy rather than trying to cover every channel.

For each position, include the job title, employer, location and dates. Add three to six concise bullets about achievements instead of writing a long list of duties. An entry level marketing CV can use internships, university projects and volunteering where paid experience is limited.

Choose skills that appear in the advertised work and are supported by examples elsewhere in the CV. Give education more space early in your career, then shorten it once your employment record becomes stronger. Extras belong only when they add evidence, such as a campaign portfolio or society project with a clear outcome. This keeps the document focused while still giving junior candidates room to demonstrate potential.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Marketing executive experienced in planning integrated campaigns across email, social media and offline channels. Increased campaign conversion by 14% through audience segmentation and landing-page testing, while coordinating agency and internal stakeholders to deliver launches on schedule. Now seeking broader responsibility for campaign planning, measurement and budget decisions.

Too generic

Hard-working and creative marketing professional with excellent communication skills and a passion for brands. I work well alone or in a team, learn quickly and want an exciting role where I can grow and make a difference. I would be good at any marketing position.

Writing your experience

Marketing experience bullets need to show what changed because of your work. Use a simple pattern: action + campaign or audience scope + result + context. The context might cover the channel mix, campaign duration, budget or problem addressed.

Start with a direct verb such as increased, optimised, launched, grew, analysed, developed, managed or implemented. Name the work precisely, then finish with an outcome such as engagement, conversion, revenue, return on investment, time saved or cost reduced. Where several people influenced the result, describe your own part honestly. "Contributed to" may be more accurate than "delivered", and it leaves you better prepared when an interviewer asks what you controlled.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for social media postsPlanned a six-week social campaign that lifted average post engagement from 3.1% to 4.0%
Helped with email marketingSegmented a 12,000-contact email list and tested subject lines, increasing click-through rate by 11%
Managed campaigns and agenciesManaged two agency briefs and a £35,000 campaign budget, completing the launch four days early and 6% under budget

The revised bullets give the reader a defined action, scale and result. They also create useful interview material: how the baseline was calculated, why the metric mattered and which decisions belonged to the candidate.

For every role, add its title, employer, location and dates, followed by three to six bullets weighted towards achievements. Junior candidates can draw on event registrations, content output, email engagement or process time saved. Marketing managers can cover budget allocation, delivery across several channels and return on investment. For senior campaign examples, know the context behind every figure because interviewers may probe specific numbers. If the role includes budget ownership, prepare to explain the budget size and how you allocated and justified the spend.

Do not force a percentage into every line. A bullet can still work when it gives a concrete output, meaningful scale and deadline. Avoid claims such as "improved brand awareness" unless you can explain the measure behind them. Use present tense for continuing work and past tense for completed outcomes, then remove filler until the action and result are clear on the first reading.

Education & certifications

List education in reverse-chronological order. Give the qualification, institution and completion date. Add selected modules, research or campaign projects only when they support the vacancy. On a graduate marketing CV, a project can briefly cover the audience, research method, recommendation and assessed result. Once your work history carries more weight, reduce older education to a compact entry.

The routes below are optional. They are not universal entry conditions for marketing work, so check the vacancy before deciding how much space to give them.

Optional routeHow to record it
Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Marketing ManagementUse this exact title, name Pearson as the issuer and add the completion date. This Higher Technical Qualification route is available for the Marketing role in England.
Certificate in HE Digital MarketingUse this exact title, name The Open University as the issuer and add the award date. This Level 4 Higher Technical Qualification route is available for the Marketing role in the UK.
Marketing BScWhere the course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, state that accurately and list only the exemptions applicable to the course and your circumstances.

For the supported Marketing BSc route, accreditation can provide exemptions from selected modules towards separate professional awards for up to five years after graduation. It does not mean that the graduate already holds those awards.

If you are still studying, show the expected completion date plainly. Describe an unfinished course accurately rather than presenting it as a completed award. Put other relevant learning under professional development without adding unsupported credential names. As your campaign record grows, allow results to take precedence over a long catalogue of courses.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidWriting a marketing personal statement around stock phrases such as "results-driven marketer" without identifying the audiences, channels or outcomes behind the claim.

InsteadReplace clichés with concise evidence. State your level, the marketing work you know and one defensible outcome, using wording you can discuss naturally at interview.

  • AvoidListing duties such as "managed social media" while leaving the reader to guess what changed.

InsteadGive the action, scope and result. Identify the channel or campaign, explain your contribution and finish with a verified measure such as engagement, conversion, revenue, time saved or cost reduced.

  • AvoidUsing inconsistent dates, crowded sections or competing visual styles in a marketing CV.

InsteadUse a clean hierarchy, aligned dates and reverse-chronological experience. Keep the presentation consistent so campaign evidence and relevant skills are easy to find.

  • AvoidSending a marketing personal statement with spelling or grammatical errors.

InsteadProofread the statement separately, read it aloud and ask another person to check the final version. Errors can make the application appear less professional.

  • AvoidClaiming a long list of marketing skills without evidence or regard for the vacancy.

InsteadPrioritise the channels, methods and tools relevant to the role. Support the strongest skills through employment, internships, university projects or volunteering instead of relying on a keyword list alone.

  • AvoidQuoting impressive campaign numbers without context or using figures that cannot be explained.

InsteadState the baseline, period, scope or your individual contribution where space permits. Use only figures you can defend, especially for ROI, budgets, conversion and revenue.
