Updated 30 June 2026

A persuasive marketing manager CV connects strategic judgement with campaigns delivered, budgets handled and results measured. This guide shows how to turn that evidence into a focused application, with advice for both established managers and senior marketing leaders. How to write a marketing manager CV

Use a clean, reverse-chronological format and aim for two pages unless your relevant career history genuinely needs more space. Put your name and contact details first, followed by a personal statement, skills, employment history, education and any useful professional development. A Marketing Manager CV benefits from showing both strategic thinking and hands-on delivery.

SectionWhat to include
Personal statementYour level, relevant sector experience, strongest commercial evidence and the kind of role you are targeting.
ExperienceRecent roles first, with short achievement bullets covering campaigns, budgets, channels, stakeholders and measured outcomes.
SkillsA tailored mix of marketing, leadership, analytical and technical capabilities that you can support with evidence elsewhere.
EducationAwarded qualifications, professional study and completion dates, listed briefly.
ExtrasLanguages, volunteering or publications only when they strengthen your fit for the vacancy.

Keep the design restrained: clear headings, consistent dates, readable type and enough white space to scan quickly. Marketing creativity belongs in the evidence, not in decorative graphics that compete with the content. Tailor the wording to each vacancy by identifying relevant phrases in the advert and using them naturally where they match your experience. This may help when an employer uses Applicant Tracking System filtering, but accuracy matters more than repetition.

Personal statement examples

Stronger example

Marketing Manager with seven years' experience turning commercial objectives into integrated campaigns for consumer services. Led annual planning across digital and offline channels, managed a £480,000 illustrative budget and improved qualified lead volume by 24% in the latest reporting year. Comfortable briefing agencies, influencing senior stakeholders and using campaign evidence to decide where the next pound should be spent.

Too generic

Hard-working and creative marketing professional looking for a new challenge in a successful company. I am a good communicator, work well alone or in a team and have experience with many marketing activities. I am passionate about brands and would bring enthusiasm to the position.

Writing your experience

A useful marketing bullet has three parts: what you changed, the scale of the work and the result. Start with the decision or action, add enough context to show ownership, then finish with a defensible measure. Marketing Manager roles commonly cover strategy, campaigns, stakeholder plans, budget control, research, reporting, product or service positioning, creative approval and agency management. Choose the parts that match the vacancy rather than trying to mention everything.

BeforeAfter
Responsible for email campaigns.Rebuilt the customer email programme across four lifecycle stages, raising the illustrative click-through rate from 2.8% to 4.1% over six months.
Managed the marketing budget.Reallocated an illustrative £320,000 annual budget towards the two best-performing channels, reducing cost per qualified lead by 17%.
Worked with agencies on a launch.Briefed and managed two specialist agencies for a new service launch, delivering 1,850 illustrative enquiries in the first eight weeks.

The stronger versions make ownership visible. They also give the reader a basis for asking sensible interview questions. Suitable measures may include qualified leads, conversion rate, acquisition cost, revenue influenced, return on investment, engagement, retention, delivery against budget or campaign timing. Pick the measure that reflects the actual objective; a large reach figure says little if the campaign was meant to produce sales.

Vary verbs according to the work. Use "developed", "positioned" or "launched" for propositions and campaigns; "allocated", "forecast" or "reduced" for budgets; "commissioned", "analysed" or "evaluated" for research and performance; and "briefed", "negotiated", "influenced" or "led" for stakeholders, suppliers and teams. Avoid opening every bullet with "managed". Senior candidates should make the decision, scale and organisational effect clear, while mid-level candidates can foreground campaign ownership, growing budget responsibility and sound execution.

Keep each bullet to one or two lines where possible. If a result was shared, describe your own contribution precisely instead of claiming the whole outcome. If commercial data is confidential, use an approved percentage, range or non-sensitive operational measure rather than disclosing restricted figures.

Education & certifications

List education after employment history once your marketing experience is the stronger selling point. Give the qualification title, subject, institution and completion year; older school-level detail can usually be shortened if it no longer helps the application. Keep incomplete study clearly labelled and do not imply that attendance equals an award.

There is no grounding here for presenting one degree, school subject or named credential as a universal entry requirement. Treat qualifications as supporting evidence and follow the vacancy wording. Where formal study is relevant, connect it to work already demonstrated in the CV, such as research, strategic planning, budgeting, customer behaviour or campaign evaluation.

CIM qualifications combine practical skills with industry-recognised standards and can support progression to Marketing Manager positions. The Diploma in Professional & Digital Marketing, issued by CIM, is described as leading towards Marketing Manager-level roles, senior marketing progression and Level 7 study. Present either only when you have genuinely completed it or are actively studying it, and state the status accurately.

For candidates following the Marketing Manager apprenticeship standard, the expected knowledge covers marketing principles and theories, brand development, consumer and organisational behaviour, stakeholder management, CRM, marketing return on investment, research, evaluation, routes to market and appropriate digital channels. That route also calls for knowledge of relevant sector legal, regulatory and compliance frameworks, including current Data Protection regulations. These expectations apply to the apprenticeship standard, not automatically to every Marketing Manager vacancy.

A short professional-development line can also record relevant, unnamed employer training without overstating it. Put dates beside recent study, remove expired or irrelevant courses, and favour evidence of applying learning over a long catalogue of attendance certificates.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • AvoidDescribing campaign duties without showing what changed. "Managed campaigns" gives no indication of audience, channel, budget, target or result.

InsteadWrite each bullet around an action and outcome. Name the campaign scope, then add a defensible measure such as qualified leads, conversion, revenue contribution, reach, cost per acquisition or return on marketing investment.

  • AvoidPresenting strategy and delivery as separate careers. A CV that contains only planning can seem remote from execution, while a list of channel tasks can obscure the candidate's commercial judgement.

InsteadConnect the two. Show how research or a business objective shaped the plan, which channels and messages you selected, and what the resulting campaign achieved.

  • AvoidListing figures without explaining their business relevance. Large impression or follower totals mean little when the reader cannot see the goal behind them.

InsteadTie each metric to the intended outcome. For example, connect engagement to customer acquisition, pipeline, retention, revenue contribution or another stated campaign goal.

  • AvoidGiving every application the same skills and wording, even when the vacancy stresses a particular market, channel mix or type of campaign.

InsteadUse the job advert to select relevant, truthful terms and place them in natural context. Keep the evidence specific to your own work rather than copying whole phrases or packing the CV with repeated keywords.

  • AvoidClaiming sole credit for work delivered by agencies, specialists or a wider marketing team.

InsteadState your actual contribution. Explain whether you set the brief, controlled the budget, approved creative work, coordinated stakeholders, managed suppliers or reported the outcome.

  • AvoidUsing one generic leadership claim for every Marketing Manager role, regardless of organisational structure.

InsteadDescribe the leadership you genuinely exercised. This might be line management, agency direction, project leadership or influence across internal teams; include team size or supplier scope only when you can verify it.
